Married to a Villainous Minister - Chapter 99
The He brothers, who were kneeling on the floor, looked at Yu Jiao with confusion when they heard her begin to inquire about the illness. She was so young that none of them even thought to guess she might be a doctor.
Second Master He, the one who had spoken with He Dongsheng earlier, stood up and pulled He Dongsheng aside, whispering, “Big Brother, where did you find this little girl? Don’t bring more harm to Father.” After what had happened with Yu Ruhai, the He family was clearly wary of Yu Jiao.
He Dongsheng didn’t know how to explain it either and simply said, “She’s a doctor.”
“Big Brother, don’t tell me you’ve been fooled again. How could a girl this young know anything about medicine? Don’t you agree, Doctor Jiang?” There was a hint of blame in Second Master He’s voice.
“Second Master He, don’t underestimate Miss Meng,” Jiang Qinghe said seriously. “Your father’s condition, she may be the only one who can treat it.”
Second Master He hadn’t expected Jiang Qinghe to speak up in defense of the young girl. Since Jiang Qinghe had stabilized their father’s condition at a critical moment, the He family treated him with respect. Though still full of doubt, Second Master He forced himself to stay quiet.
“Doctor Jiang, could you help me write a prescription?” Yu Jiao asked calmly as she washed her hands with the water basin held by a nearby maid.
Jiang Qinghe nodded eagerly. He took out pen and paper from his medicine box and sat down at a carved round table nearby. At Yu Jiao’s direction, he wrote down two prescriptions. One was to regulate the internal qi and blood that had been thrown into chaos by Yu Ruhai’s previous treatment. The other was to treat the internal abscess.
She also added a pill formula, which Jiang Qinghe needed to prepare himself, so he would pick up all the ingredients from the Huichun Hall while collecting the other two prescriptions’ herbs.
As Jiang Qinghe reviewed the formulas he had just written, his eyes lit up. He sincerely exclaimed, “Brilliant! These two prescriptions use gentle herbs with precisely targeted effects, one to clear, one to nourish. Miss Meng, you’ve truly exceeded my expectations.”
The He family members exchanged glances, suddenly looking at Yu Jiao differently. If Jiang Qinghe, of all people, praised her this highly, maybe, just maybe, this young girl could really cure their father.
Jiang Qinghe left the He household to fetch the medicine. Meanwhile, Yu Jiao asked He Dongsheng, “Do you still have the medicinal powder Yu Ruhai previously gave the old master?”
“We do,” He Dongsheng replied, then instructed a maid to bring it. He looked at Yu Jiao, hesitating as if he wanted to say something. All the doctors they’d invited before had declared the old man beyond saving. It was only thanks to Jiang Qinghe’s emergency treatment that his life was temporarily preserved.
Although Yu Jiao didn’t act like some clueless country girl, she carried herself with composure and confidence, it was still hard for He Dongsheng to believe that a girl who looked barely older than a child could bring his father back from the brink of death.
Yu Jiao noticed his hesitation and asked directly, “Is there something you’d like to say, Master He?”
He Dongsheng hesitated for a moment, then asked, “Can my father still be saved?”
Yu Jiao gave a faint smile. “It’s not an incurable illness. Of course he can be saved.”
The way she said it so lightly, He Dongsheng couldn’t tell if she was overconfident or simply self-assured. When the maid returned with the powder, Yu Jiao saw there was still a good amount left. She asked, “How many times was this powder applied to the old master’s carbuncle?”
“Only once, back at the Yu family’s home,” He Dongsheng replied. “After that, he took Yu Ruhai’s decoctions and his condition quickly worsened. We didn’t dare use the powder again.”
Yu Jiao asked the maid to find a clean wooden spatula, then dry-applied the powder once again to the old master’s infected head sore. Noticing He Dongsheng watching her closely, she explained, “This powder is safe and very effective for sores like this. The reason your father’s condition deteriorated was because of the internal decoction, not the powder.”
He Dongsheng remained doubtful, but he had already made the choice to let Meng Yujiao treat his father. Now, he could only trust her and let her do as she saw fit. If she couldn’t save the old master, then they’d settle all accounts later.
