Married to a Villainous Minister - Chapter 97
“Steward, the old man just fainted!” one of the men dragging Yu Ruhai called out.
Steward He gave the unconscious Yu Ruhai a disdainful glance and said coldly, “Throw him onto the carriage and bring him back.”
Then he turned to Yu Jiao, his expression no longer as fierce, though his smile was forced. “Miss Meng, if you would, please come along.”
Yu Jiao was just about to step toward the carriage when Old Madam Yu suddenly spoke up, “That prescription for the carbuncle, this girl developed it entirely on her own! It had nothing to do with my husband. If you don’t believe me, I can get the Mu family to confirm. Their young master is my son’s schoolmate!”
Yu Jiao gave her a cold look, her gaze indifferent. Without emotion, she turned to Jiang Qinghe and asked, “How is the old master of the He family?”
Jiang Qinghe replied, “The old master’s health was already frail due to his age and the carbuncle on his head. His pulse was weak, his energy depleted, and his body filled with toxins. Yet that old fool from your family used the same prescription you gave for Second Master Mu. That only worsened the illness and nearly killed him.”
Hearing that the man was seriously ill but not dead, Yu Jiao turned to Steward He and said, “Yes, the prescription for the carbuncle was mine. I’ll go with you to your estate alone.”
Steward He clearly didn’t like that idea, but her next words made him hesitate.
“You’ve seen his skills for yourself. Even if he came, it wouldn’t help,” Yu Jiao said calmly. “Instead of wasting time here, why not take me to your estate as quickly as possible?”
Jiang Qinghe’s eyes lit up at her confidence. “You mean to say you’re certain you can cure the He family’s old master?”
“I need to see the patient first,” Yu Jiao replied.
But Jiang Qinghe had an unshakable faith that she could indeed cure him. He immediately urged Steward He to throw the old man Yu Ruhai off the carriage and return to the estate without delay.
Steward He was still torn, but after some thought, he agreed. He left two men behind at the Yu household to keep watch, just in case Yu Ruhai woke up and tried to flee.
His thinking was, ‘If Yu Jiao fails to save the old master, the Yu family will still be held accountable. There’s time to drag that old man back later.’
And so, Yu Jiao followed Steward He to the He estate in Changkui County, with Jiang Qinghe tagging along, eager to see how she would treat the old master.
The He family estate was a grander place than even the Zhang household she had visited previously. Crimson gates, stone lion statues flanking the entrance, all very imposing. No wonder they could casually offer thirty taels as a consultation fee.
Yu Jiao entered through a side gate in a carriage. Steward He led her and Jiang Qinghe swiftly into the inner courtyard. With the old master critically ill, no servant dared speak loudly, and the entire household was gathered outside his room. Despite his grief, Master He had already sent someone to order a coffin from the charitable hall outside the city.
When He Dongsheng saw Steward He return, his face was dark with anger. Spotting the young girl and Jiang Qinghe behind him, but not the old man who had treated his father, his expression turned even colder.
He asked in a low, dangerous voice, “Where is that quack?”
Steward He quickly stepped forward, “Master, this young lady is Miss Meng, the one who treated Second Master Mu. The prescription that quack used on the old master was actually hers.”
He hadn’t even finished his explanation when He Dongsheng hurled the teacup in his hand at him. “I told you to bring that old fool! Where is he?!”
Steward He flinched but didn’t dare dodge. The teacup struck him on the forehead, splashing tea all over his face.
He Dongsheng, consumed with rage, glared at Yu Jiao. Seeing she was barely thirteen or fourteen, the fire in his chest only burned hotter.
He squeezed his words out through clenched teeth, “So it was you who wrote that prescription? Well done. Your Yu family is truly fearless. Just to earn a few taels, you dared to mess with my father’s life! If anything happens to him, your whole family will be buried with him!”
