The Yu family was threshing wheat in the main hall when a knock came from the courtyard gate. Yu Hanshan, eager to take a break, jumped to his feet and cheerfully ran out to open the gate.

Outside stood a middle-aged man, accompanied by a servant dressed as a houseboy, who was holding an umbrella for him. When Yu Hanshan opened the gate, the man greeted him with a polite smile and asked, “Is this the residence of Doctor Yu?”

Yu Hanshan immediately noticed the man’s fine attire and well-fed appearance. Behind him was a black domed carriage adorned with light blue cloud-patterned silk, pulled by a sleek, glossy chestnut horse, clearly the mark of a wealthy household.

With a grin, Yu Hanshan replied, “Yes, Doctor Yu is my father. May I ask what brings you here to see him?”

The middle-aged man replied courteously, “To be honest, I’ve brought my father here to consult with Doctor Yu.”

Upon hearing this, Yu Hanshan quickly swung open both gates and welcomed them in. The servant led the carriage into the courtyard and carefully helped the elderly man inside it down. The middle-aged man held the umbrella over him as the three of them followed Yu Hanshan into the main hall.

Yu Ruhai had already noticed the commotion outside and rose to greet them. The middle-aged man looked around the room, and when his eyes settled on Yu Ruhai, he smiled and said, “You must be the esteemed Doctor Yu, I am He Dongsheng. I’ve heard you cured the carbuncle illness of Second Master Mu from the Mu family. My father is suffering from a similar condition, and I’ve come to beg for your help.”

He Dongsheng had only recently heard that Second Master Mu Yan’s carbuncle had been successfully treated. His own father was suffering from a carbuncle on the scalp. Despite consulting numerous doctors, none had been able to cure him. So, upon confirming from a Mu family servant that a country doctor had treated Mu Yan, he wasted no time, preparing the carriage and rushing to the Yu household.

“Please, have a seat,” Yu Ruhai said, gesturing to the elder. “Let me check your pulse first.”

He placed a wrist pillow on the table, and the elderly man shakily extended his arm. Yu Ruhai laid his fingers on the man’s wrist and took his time examining the pulse, only pulling his hand back with a frown.

He recalled the pulse of Mu Yan from before, it had been forceful and rapid. In contrast, this old man’s pulse was taut, quick, yet weak, very different from Mu Yan’s condition.

Seeing Yu Ruhai’s concerned expression, He Dongsheng asked anxiously, “How is it? Since falling ill, my father has suffered terribly. If you can cure his scalp carbuncle, Doctor Yu, you’ll be our family’s greatest benefactor!”

Yu Ruhai had originally thought he could apply Yu Jiao’s formula for treating carbuncles, as he had already memorized it completely and was eager to prove himself. But now, given that the pulse patterns differed, he felt hesitant. Still, sensing He Dongsheng’s high regard for him, he said, “Let me examine the affected area first.”

The old man was already in his sixties, with a face deeply lined and devoid of vitality. A square cloth covered his head. Upon hearing Yu Ruhai, he shakily reached up to touch it.

“Let me do it, Father,” said He Dongsheng quickly.

He carefully untied the cloth, revealing that the elderly man’s white hair had almost entirely fallen out. The back of his head was covered in festering sores, mottled and honeycombed like a wasp’s nest, horrifying to look at.

Yu Ruhai was shocked. This was a scalp carbuncle, entirely different from Mu Yan’s condition. He examined it closely before sitting down, visibly hesitant. He wasn’t sure whether he should use Yu Jiao’s remedy in this case.

Seeing the silence, He Dongsheng urgently pleaded, “I heard that Doctor Yu’s use of medicine is nothing short of miraculous. Mu Yan recovered after just a few doses over five or six days. Please, I beg you, do not withhold your cure. Relieve my father of this suffering!”
