Married to a Villainous Minister - Chapter 60
Yu Ruhai glanced at Doctor Jiang, nodded with a polite smile as a greeting, though he couldn’t quite figure out why Mu Yan had brought a town doctor with him.
Doctor Jiang returned the smile warmly. “Doctor Yu, I am Jiang Qinghe. I’ve seen the results of Master Mu’s carbuncle treatment, your skills truly bring the dead back to life. For someone like me, who has always been helpless with such conditions, I’m full of admiration.”
After leaving the Yu household that day, Mu Yan still had doubts, so he had a servant deliver the prescription and powder Yu Jiao had prepared to Doctor Jiang at Huichun Hall in town. Jiang reviewed the prescription himself and, after confirming it was safe, Mu Yan began the treatment as instructed by Yu Jiao.
Jiang Qinghe had taken note of the prescription then. Once the rain cleared today, he personally visited the Mu residence to examine the condition. What he found left him shocked, Mu Yan’s carbuncles had not spread, most had already scabbed over, and some even had the scabs fall off. In just a few days, he’d be fully healed.
Carbuncles are notoriously difficult to cure. In all his years of practice, Jiang Qinghe had never encountered such an effective remedy. Curious, he questioned Mu Yan at length about the doctor who’d prescribed it.
Mu Yan only said it came from a country physician, but Jiang, intrigued and impressed, discussed it with the owner of Huichun Hall. They began considering purchasing the formula from this rural doctor.
So when Jiang heard Mu Yan planned to visit and offer his thanks, he decided to come along.
Though Yu Ruhai was merely a country doctor, he knew that Huichun Hall was one of the top pharmacies in town. It was said their owner was extremely wealthy, with a high-end branch in the city. Their standards were so high that even selling herbs to them was nearly impossible.
To be so highly regarded by a resident doctor from Huichun Hall made Yu Ruhai feel a sense of pride, but also guilt, after all, it wasn’t him who cured the carbuncles.
He considered taking the credit but couldn’t with Mu Yan, who knew the truth, sitting right there. So, he gave a modest smile. “Doctor Jiang, you flatter me. The credit belongs mostly to my granddaughter-in-law. I only played a small supporting role.”
“Oh?” Jiang Qinghe looked surprised. “It was your granddaughter-in-law who cured Master Mu’s carbuncles?”
Mu Yan chimed in at the right moment, “Doctor Yu’s granddaughter-in-law is also a physician, quite a skilled one.”
He looked around the room but didn’t see Yu Jiao. Turning to Yu Ruhai, he asked, “Where is Miss Meng? I came especially to thank her and to offer an apology.”
Yu Ruhai smiled, “She’s in the kitchen, preparing medicine.” He glanced at Old Madam Yu, signaling her to go call Yu Jiao.
Old Madam Yu went to the kitchen and said to Yu Jiao coolly, “Your grandfather wants you in the main hall.”
Yu Jiao gave her a glance, then looked back down at the medicine pot, where the decoction was still not ready.
Feeling slighted, Old Madam Yu was on the verge of scolding her like she usually would, but with important guests in the house and Yu Jiao being the one who had cured them, she swallowed her irritation. “Master Mu says he wants to thank you. Don’t keep the guests waiting.”
With that, she turned and left, not bothering to wait for a response.
Yu Fuling beamed. “So that Master Mu really was cured by you! Yu Jiao, you should go, I’ll keep an eye on the medicine.”
Yu Jiao didn’t rush, still calmly watching over the decoction. “No hurry. I’ll go once the medicine is done.”
Back in the main hall, Yu Ruhai exchanged a few more pleasantries with Mu Yan and Doctor Jiang. Seeing that Yu Jiao still hadn’t arrived, he urged Old Madam Yu to fetch her again.
With no choice, Old Madam Yu left the hall once more for the kitchen.
“What are you playing at?” she snapped with a glare. “Are we supposed to invite you five times just to get you to show up?”
Yu Jiao ignored her. Only when the nearly full pot of decoction had boiled down to a single bowl did she lift the pot, pour the thick medicine into a bowl, and hand it to Yu Fuling. “Have Wu-ge drink this while it’s still hot.”
Yu Fuling quickly nodded and carried the bowl to Yu Qizhe.
Only then did Yu Jiao wipe her hands and head toward the main hall with Old Madam Yu.
