Yu Jiao hesitated. She truly didn’t want to get involved with Yang Jiyan, so she said, “I didn’t bring my medical kit with me today…”

“This concerns human life, it can’t be delayed! Please, Sister Yu Jiao, come with me to the Sun residence first. I’ll ask Sister Fuling to return home and fetch the kit,” Yang Jiyan urged anxiously.

A maid from the Shen household pleaded with Yu Jiao, “Please, Miss Yu, save my lady’s cousin.”

Yu Jiao stood up and stepped down from her carriage, walking toward Yang Jiyan’s. She asked the maid, “What are the symptoms?”

The maid replied in a hushed voice, “My lady’s cousin is five months pregnant. She fell this morning and began bleeding. The Physician said the baby is already dead inside her, and if the fetus isn’t expelled, she might not survive. But the child is already formed, and the medicine to induce a miscarriage not only failed, it nearly cost her her life.”

Upon hearing this, Yu Jiao turned to Yu Fuling. “Sister, go home and bring the medical kit to the Sun residence.”

The maid, under Shen Wan’s orders, had rushed over by carriage and volunteered, “I’ll go with this young lady to retrieve the kit. Miss Yang, please take Physician Yu to the Sun residence first.”

Yang Jiyan nodded, and Yu Jiao climbed into the Yang family’s carriage.

The maid accompanied Yu Fuling back to the Mu residence to get the medical kit.

“Is there any hope for Cousin Xueyan?” Yang Jiyan asked worriedly as she instructed the driver to hurry to the Sun residence.

Yu Jiao’s expression was calm. “I can’t say until I’ve seen her.”

Hearing this, Yang Jiyan didn’t press further.

She did feel some sympathy for Wang Xueyan. Her current situation in the Sun family was eerily similar to her own past life in the Zhou family. She knew all too well the cruel tricks women played behind closed doors. With Wang Xueyan carrying a child, there was no way a fall like that was an accident, it was likely someone’s doing.

Her own hard-earned pregnancy in her past life had been lost in the same way.

After a long silence, Yang Jiyan sighed softly. “Cousin Xueyan has been through so much. Please, Sister Yu Jiao, do everything you can to save her.”

Yang Jiyan had survived such hardship herself, and even if Wang Xueyan lived, her life was already ruined. The days ahead would only be more painful.

As they spoke, the carriage arrived at the gates of the Sun residence. The coachman jumped down and set up a stool.

Yang Jiyan and Yu Jiao got out of the carriage and hurried inside.

The Sun family’s inner quarters were in complete chaos. Shen Wan had detained all the maids and older servants who had been attending to Wang Xueyan and was currently discussing with a physician how to remove the dead fetus.

When someone informed her that Yang Jiyan had arrived, Shen Wan quickly said, “Bring Miss Yang here!”

A matron led Yang Jiyan and Yu Jiao into Feixue Courtyard. Seeing the many kneeling servants in the yard, Yang Jiyan knew Shen Wan must be furious.

When Yang Jiyan entered the room, Shen Wan paused her conversation with the physician. “You’re finally here, Miss Yang. This must be Physician Yu?”

Yang Jiyan stepped forward anxiously. “How is Cousin Xueyan?”

Worry and sorrow clouded Shen Wan’s delicate features. She shook her head, “We’ve been discussing options. If nothing else works, we’ll have to use aggressive medicine. But Cousin Xueyan’s body is frail, I fear she won’t survive it.”

“Let Sister Yu Jiao take a look first,” Yang Jiyan said.

Shen Wan quickly nodded. “Please, Physician Yu, this way.”

She led Yu Jiao into the side room, and Yang Jiyan followed. On the bed lay Wang Xueyan, her face pale and haggard, her lips devoid of color. Though five months pregnant, she looked thinner than she had when she was unmarried in the capital.

One glance was enough to see how much she had suffered in the Sun household.

The sight reminded Yang Jiyan too much of her own past life. She couldn’t bear it and turned to leave the room.

“Wanwan…” Wang Xueyan called weakly. “Don’t bother anymore. Let me go, it would be a relief.”

Hearing that, Shen Wan couldn’t hold back her tears. She forced herself to stay composed. “Cousin, don’t say such foolish things. The child is gone, yes, but you can conceive again. If you die, nothing will be left.”

Wang Xueyan gave a bitter smile. Even if she lived, she’d only suffer a few more miserable years in this hellish Sun family.

“Cousin, I’ve brought a female Physician to look at you,” Shen Wan said, stepping aside.

Yu Jiao approached the canopy bed, took Wang Xueyan’s pulse, then lifted the bedding.

Due to the miscarriage medicine, Wang Xueyan had lost a great deal of blood; the bedding beneath her was soaked red. Yu Jiao seemed unfazed by the sight. With delicate fingers, she gently palpated Wang Xueyan’s abdomen.

Shen Wan anxiously asked, “Well? Physician Yu, can the fetus be expelled?”

Yu Jiao glanced at the woman lying on the bed and quietly said to Shen Wan, “Yes, but… I see no will to live in her.”

Shen Wan also looked at Wang Xueyan, whose expression was numb, she seemed resigned to death. Shen Wan’s heart ached. She wiped the tears from her eyes and said, “I’ll talk to her.”

She walked to the bed, gently caressing Wang Xueyan’s pale face. She pleaded, “Cousin, think of your parents. If you die, they’ll be burying their daughter in their old age. Your mother dotes on you the most, if you’re gone, how can she go on?”

Wang Xueyan thought of her parents and tears welled up. “I… I don’t have the face to see them again…”

Shen Wan held her hand gently and said, “Ever since your mother learned what kind of life you were living in the Sun family, she’s cried every day and can barely eat. You’ve always been the most filial since childhood. Even if not for yourself, live for your mother.”

Thinking of the shameless, conniving people in the Sun household, anger flashed across Shen Wan’s face. She gritted her teeth and said, “Cousin, you must live, only by living can you bring that vile woman to justice. And the entire Sun family, too. Once you’ve recovered, divorce that heartless bastard Sun Songwen! Grandfather will make sure justice is served!”

At the mention of divorce, a spark flickered in Wang Xueyan’s eyes, but it quickly faded. She wept silently and said weakly, “Even if I leave the Sun family, what then? They’ve already ruined me. Returning to the capital would only bring shame to my parents…”

Hearing this, Shen Wan didn’t know what else to say. She had only spoken of divorce in desperation. In truth, what place was there in this world for a divorced woman? The judgment and disdain from others were like waves crashing down, enough to destroy someone.

Words cut like blades. And when society offers no refuge, where can one go?

Yu Jiao sighed softly and finally spoke, “Miss Xueyan, you’re seeing it all wrong. A woman doesn’t have to depend on her husband’s family to survive. A woman can live a good life by relying on her own strength.”
