Ye Fangfei looked at the stack of bills in her hands, her heart bubbling with joy. With this money, she no longer had to worry about start-up capital for her business.

She planned to open a small dessert shop—start with a few simple sponge cakes to test the waters, and if they sold well, she would gradually add more variety.

In the 21st century, Ye Fangfei’s father was a senior partner at a law firm, and her mother ran a dessert chain.

In their city, her family’s dessert shops were everywhere—business booming, even supplying pastries to various Western-style restaurants.

Every dessert on the menu was something her mother developed by hand.

She and her younger brother had always been the taste-testers. Whatever her mother made, the first mouths to try were inevitably the two of them.

Growing up surrounded by all of this, she naturally picked up a lot. Sometimes her mom would drag her into the kitchen to help out. Even though she never formally trained, she could pretty much make most things by memory.

She still remembered her sixteenth birthday—her mother made her a sixteen-inch cherry cake. But for her brother’s birthday? A massive six-layer cake, and they even invited the relatives over to celebrate and sing him birthday songs.

On her birthday, aside from that small cake, there was nothing else.

Ye Fangfei had been furious, thinking her parents were too biased. So she made a lavish six-layer cake for herself—bigger, prettier, and grander than her brother’s.

Then she invited her entire class over and held a full-scale cake battle in the house. The place was a disaster zone. Her mom nearly fainted. They had to hire several cleaners, and it took a whole day to get the house back in order.

That’s right—sixteen-year-old Ye Fangfei was exactly that rebellious. Her motto: If you won’t make me happy, then no one’s having a good time. If she was upset, the whole family could suffer with her.

Her rebellious phase didn’t ease up until she went to university. And it wasn’t because she suddenly became sensible.

It was because, after chatting with the girls in her dorm, she learned their monthly living expenses were only a thousand or two. The most well-off girl had three thousand. Their families rarely send care packages.

Meanwhile, she received parcels every few days, snacks, clothes, fruit, anything she wanted.

A single pair of sports shoes she just bought was nearly equivalent to someone else’s entire monthly budget.

She had never understood money. Her home always had spare cash lying around, available anytime she needed it.

She’d never lacked money in her life. Just yesterday, her dad called to ask if she still had enough spending money.

At that moment, Ye Fangfei suddenly realized—maybe her parents did treat her fairly. Maybe they just spoiled her brother a bit more. But compared to her classmates, her life was already impossibly good.

After that, she stopped talking back to her parents. She no longer fought with her brother. She calmed down, became gentler, even occasionally helped her mom brainstorm new dessert ideas and offered suggestions.

When she felt like it, she’d even cook the braised dishes her dad loved, or the cola wings and lemon chicken feet her brother adored.

Her sudden transformation left her family stunned—and a little uneasy. They even wondered if she’d experienced heartbreak or was being bullied at school.

During summer break, her parents kept probing gently, asking if something had happened. They spoke to her cautiously, afraid of upsetting her.

Even her little tyrant of a brother stopped fighting with her and abandoned his favorite games. He followed her everywhere, clearly acting under their parents’ instructions—probably afraid she might do something drastic.

It annoyed Ye Fangfei to death. Eventually, she snapped and stole his airplane model, then found some excuse to beat him until he howled.

Only then did her parents realize they’d misunderstood. Their daughter was still the same troublemaker—definitely not heartbroken, and not traumatized. With her temper, she only ever bullied others. No one dared bully her.

As for why she changed so much. They guessed she must have grown up a little, finally learning what shame felt like and becoming embarrassed to cause trouble like before.

Thinking of her family, Ye Fangfei’s eyes suddenly grew red. She missed her biased parents. She even missed that annoying little brother.

Why had she ended up here?

Could it be that the her from the other world had really died?

Would she ever return?

And the Ye Fangfei from this era—where had she gone? Had their souls switched?

If they had switched, she hoped that the original Ye Fangfei would get along well with her parents back home… and she would take care of the parents here in her place.

The more she thought, the sadder she became, sitting there silently shedding tears.

She didn’t know how long she cried until she heard Zhu Dongmei’s sharp, mocking voice outside.

“Well, well, Cuijuan, you’re even bringing meals to your sister-in-law’s door. Never seen such a dutiful little sister-in-law. What a lucky woman—someone even serves her food.”

Shen Cuijuan ignored her and gently tapped on the door with her foot.
“Sister-in-law, I brought your food. Can you open the door?”

Ye Fangfei hurriedly opened it. Shen Cuijuan was holding two bowls—one bowl of steamed egg custard, half a bowl of stir-fried eggplant, and two corn pancakes on top.

She quickly took them and put them on the table, throwing a pointed eye roll toward Zhu Dongmei outside.

Shen Cuijuan smiled. “Sister-in-law, eat first. I’ll go get you a bowl of corn porridge.” She headed out as she spoke.

Ye Fangfei called after her, “Cui Juan, bring your food too. Let’s eat together.”

“Okay, sister-in-law!” Shen Cuijuan ran off happily.

Her sister-in-law rarely left the room and wasn’t close to the family. Now that she was acting warm and friendly, Shen Cuijuan felt delighted.

Ignoring her third aunt’s sarcastic looks, she went to the kitchen to get her share of food.

Ye Fangfei divided the egg custard in half and smiled. “Here, we’ll share.”

Shen Cuijuan quickly waved her hand. “Sister-in-law, I’m healthy. I don’t need eggs. You eat it.”

“I can’t finish it.” When the girl still tried to refuse, Ye Fangfei put on a stern face. “Eat. Why are you so noisy?”

Shen Cuijuan could only accept, blushing. “Thank you, sister-in-law.”

Ye Fangfei smiled, took a bite of the corn pancake, and chewed for a long time before finally swallowing.

It wasn’t that she disliked the food. She knew life in this era was like this. But she had grown up eating refined, delicate meals. This kind of coarse food was… hard to stomach.

Clearly, her first priority now was to earn money. Only then could the quality of life improve. Only then could she eat whatever she wanted.

As Shen Cuijuan reached for more food, she noticed Ye Fangfei’s awkward movements and the swollen redness of her fingers. “Sister-in-law, what happened to your hand?”

Ye Fangfei laughed awkwardly and made up an excuse. “It’s nothing. I pricked myself while mending clothes yesterday.”

As if she could say the truth—that when she first transmigrated, she got excited thinking every traveler got a golden cheat ability and spent the past two days testing it out.

She pricked every one of her fingers, dripped blood onto the kitchen knife, scissors, broken bowl, a black ceramic jar, even that old brass lock in the main room, nothing activated. No golden finger awakened. All she got were swollen fingertips.

Shen Cuijuan knew her sister-in-law was terrible with needlework. But there was no way mending clothes would injure every finger.

Still, she didn’t press. She didn’t want to embarrass her.

Ye Fangfei finished the egg custard, then slowly ate half a pancake, some vegetables, and a few sips of corn porridge before putting down her chopsticks.

Shen Cuijuan ate heartily, taking bites of pancake and vegetables. Seeing Ye Fangfei stop, she asked anxiously, “Sister-in-law, why did you eat so little? Are you feeling unwell?”

Ye Fangfei shook her head with a smile. “No. It’s just too hot—no appetite.”

“It has been hot. I sweated so much last night my pillow towel got soaked.”

Shen Cuijuan quickly finished her food, stacked the bowls, and glanced at the big bed. “Sister-in-law, I’m going to wash the sheets at the river later. Let me change yours too—I’ll wash them together.”

Ye Fangfei wanted to refuse, but remembering the original owner often made her sister-in-law do laundry, she nodded instead.

She had things to do later anyway. She’d let Shen Cuijuan handle the chores for now—and bring her something delicious as thanks afterward.
