Ye Fangfei listened to the chatter of children outside and the low voices of adults. She rolled over, pulled the blanket over her head, and tried to go back to sleep.

It had already been three days since she arrived in this parallel timeline, yet she still struggled to accept the fact that she had transmigrated.

All she did was get hit by an electric scooter that ran a red light—how did that send her into another world? And of all things, she ended up inside a book.

In her previous life, her parents had slightly favored boys over girls, but the family was well-off. Compared to her precious little brother, she may have received a bit less affection, but she was never lacking materially. In a way, she had still grown up comfortably pampered.

She herself was promising—a top student from childhood, accepted into a good university, and after finishing graduate school, she smoothly entered a well-known company.

A bright future was waiting for her.
Yet a single scooter crash sent her straight into the 1980s, into the body of another Ye Fangfei with the same name.

And the original owner of this body was even more ridiculous—she had secretly eaten an egg in the middle of the night, choked on the yolk, and suffocated to death.

When she transmigrated in, she almost died the same way. She’d spent half her breath pressing against the edge of the table before she finally dislodged that damned egg yolk.

Never in her life did Ye Fangfei imagine something so dog-blooded would happen to her.

With a sigh, she hugged her blanket and rolled twice on the kang bed. She was just about to get up and dress when she heard someone knocking.

A woman’s voice called from outside, “Sister-in-law, you’re still not up? It’s our turn to cut pig grass today. While it’s still cool, let’s go early. We’ll have time to help around the house after we get back.”

Hearing that syrupy, passive-aggressive tone, Ye Fangfei couldn’t help rolling her eyes.

The one knocking was Liu Wenjing, wife of Shen Zhanping from the eldest branch of the Shen family—Ye Fangfei’s cousin-in-law. And she was none other than the female lead of the novel Sweet Honey Little Wife, the very book Ye Fangfei had read before transmigrating.

According to the novel, Liu Wenjing had transmigrated on the second day of her wedding. It had been almost a month now, and she had completely adapted to her new identity. At the moment, she was busy urging her husband to split from the family so they could go to the city and make money.

In Sweet Honey Little Wife, Liu Wenjing and Shen Zhanping were the male and female leads.

And Ye Fangfei’s husband, Shen Zhanxun, was nothing more than the stepping stone the male and female leads used to succeed.

Thinking about the cheap husband who died early in the book, Ye Fangfei couldn’t suppress another sigh.

In the novel, Shen Zhanxun had been a heroic man—capable, resourceful, ambitious. He joined the army at sixteen, and by twenty-five, he was already a battalion commander, decorated with numerous military merits, even recognized by high-ranking leaders.

For a boy from a rural village with no background, reaching that level was already extraordinary.

The novel didn’t devote much space to him. It merely said that if he’d stayed in the military, his future would have been limitless.

As for why he left the army? The book skimmed over it in a few lines. It said that after Ye Fangfei gave birth to a daughter, her health was damaged. Because she had a delicate, sensitive disposition, she would brood over every offhand comment. Her thoughts grew heavier and darker day by day. She had even heard some rumor that Shen Zhanxun had a lover in the military, so she constantly wrote letters and made phone calls demanding he leave the army.

Unable to withstand her nagging, Shen Zhanxun applied for her to join him as a military family member. But she disliked the harsh conditions in the northwest, unwilling to be separated from her parents. She wanted him to transfer back home instead.

Fearing he wouldn’t agree, she had taken their daughter to the base and caused a scene—an ugly one.

Seeing his sickly wife and frail daughter, Shen Zhanxun felt he owed them. Despite repeated attempts by his superiors to persuade him to stay, he still applied for discharge.

Because of his high rank in the army, he was immediately assigned as the Deputy Director of the Dongping Municipal Public Security Bureau, and his career progressed smoothly.

Just when he was about to be promoted, an important figure was kidnapped by foreign terrorists and taken across the border.

Since Shen Zhanxun was familiar with the terrain from previous missions, he was sent to assist in the rescue.

After the hostage was safely extracted, he covered their retreat. That was when a sniper hidden in the shadows shot him straight through the forehead. He died instantly.

And just like that, a hero’s life ended.

By then, Shen Zhanping and Liu Wenjing already owned two large restaurants in Dongping City.

To maintain Shen Zhanxun’s network of connections, they frequently brought his parents to the city to “care for them,” supposedly fulfilling their filial duties in place of their cousin.

Not only did this earn the male and female leads an excellent reputation, but it also smoothed the path for their business. Everyone praised them as a righteous and loving couple.

Shen Zhanxun’s parents didn’t last long in the city—they weren’t used to the lifestyle. Soon, their younger son brought them back home. Some people secretly mocked them for “not knowing how to enjoy blessings,” but only those who have lived under someone else’s roof know how bitter it can be.

Later, no one remembered that although the male and female leads’ business success was a mix of personal ability and luck, they also relied heavily on the help of Shen Zhanxun’s former friends and comrades.

Though Ye Fangfei had spent only a few days with Shen Zhanxun’s parents, she could tell they were gentle but reasonable people—not greedy, not foolish. There was no way they would expect their nephew to care for them.

Shen Zhanxun had sacrificed his life, but they still had a daughter and a son—both deeply filial. They only stayed with the male and female leads because they couldn’t refuse the insistence.

When she had read that book, Ye Fangfei always felt the male and female leads were unscrupulous and had questionable morals.

She’d nearly abandoned the book several times, but she wanted to know what happened to Shen Zhanxun’s family. So, she swallowed the story whole to the end and learned the full tale of how Shen Zhanping and Liu Wenjing built their fortune.

In the original timeline, Liu Wenjing had died of cancer. Having been a housewife for over twenty years, she had developed excellent cooking skills.

After transmigrating, she immediately pushed for splitting the household, opened a small eatery with Shen Zhanping, grew it into two large restaurants within a few years, then moved on to factories and real estate.

By the early 2000s, they had become major taxpayers in Dongping City—envied by all, living a life like immortals.

Thinking about the plot, Ye Fangfei slipped on her shoes.

Just then, another knock sounded. “Sister-in-law? You’re still not up? Even Grandpa and Grandma are awake already!”

Hearing nothing from inside, Liu Wenjing’s tone became impatient and louder than before.

With all that noise, the entire household now knew Ye Fangfei was still in bed.

The Shen Family raised two assigned pigs, and the women took turns cutting pig grass. Today was her turn with Liu Wenjing.

Ye Fangfei was about to respond when a gentle voice said with a smile, “Wenjing, Fangfei’s been feeling unwell these past few days. Don’t call her again. I’ll have Cuijuan go with you.”

It was her mother-in-law, Sun Xiujü. Cuijuan was her youngest daughter—Ye Fangfei’s sister-in-law.

Shen Jianhua and Sun Xiujü had four children.
The eldest, Shen Zhanxun, was 25 and had been in the army for nine years. He’d only returned home three times.
The second daughter, Shen Cuilan, 22, was married to a man in the neighboring Wang village and had given birth to a girl last year.
The third daughter, Shen Cuijuan, was 18 and still unmarried.
The youngest son, Shen Zhanqiang, was 15 and in his third year of middle school in town.

Shen Zhanxun and Ye Fangfei had married through exchanged photos. His parents felt he was already old enough and, knowing he had no suitable prospects in the army, sent him her picture.

Shen Zhanxun himself knew it was time to settle down. Although plenty of people in the army tried to introduce him to partners—and even a few female comrades hinted openly—those relationships were complicated. He didn’t want to get entangled, so he never pursued anything.

His parents wrote that the girl had no objections after seeing his photo.

He thought she looked decent enough, so he submitted his marriage application and took half a month off to return home to marry.

But on the wedding day, a telegram from the army ordered him to return immediately. They didn’t even get to consummate the marriage before he hurried away—gone for more than two years since.

Both of his parents were honest, kind farmers, and they treated Ye Fangfei extremely well.

Otherwise, with the original owner’s delicate temperament, if her husband had been gone for years and her in-laws had treated her poorly, she would’ve run back to her parents long ago.

Ye Fangfei opened the door, face expressionless. She ignored Liu Wenjing completely. Glancing at her mother-in-law, she said flatly, “No need. I’ll go.”

It wasn’t that she was rude or didn’t know how to greet others—the original Ye Fangfei had been exactly like this. If she suddenly changed too much, people would grow suspicious.

Over two years, Shen Zhanxun had written only a few letters. Each one barely filled a single page—just a few lines asking about her health, thanking her for her hard work at home, and telling her to take care.

Always the same lines.
Not a single sweet word.
It had made the original Ye Fangfei furious every time.
