Chapter 79: Sweet Birthday Date

Lu Zhijin’s reliable biological clock woke him promptly at six in the morning. When he opened his eyes, he was greeted once again by Song Shimu’s beautiful face.

However, unlike usual mornings, his fragrant and soft wife wasn’t sleeping in his embrace today. Instead, she was gazing at him with playful eyes, speaking tenderly:

Happy birthday, my dear husband!

Today marked Lu Zhijin’s twenty-seventh birthday.

Lu Zhijin wrapped his long arm around her, pulling the woman against his chest. Rubbing his nose affectionately against her delicate one, he replied in a deep voice:

Thank you, my wife.

Then came the sound of pattering slippers. Three seconds later, the bedroom door opened from outside.

Lu Yike appeared in the doorway, his messy little curls sticking out in all directions, his milky voice ringing out clearly:

Happy birthday, Daddy! I love you!

Thank you, sweetheart. I love you too.

Dressed in his bear-patterned pajamas, Lu Yike clumsily climbed onto the bed holding a small box, looking at Lu Zhijin with expectant eyes.

Daddy, this is my present for you!

Lu Zhijin sat up, placed the box on his lap, and gently opened it.

Inside was a seashell-shaped glass jar filled with folded paper stars, surrounded by several handmade roses.

On top lay a drawing depicting their family of three in cartoon style. Having taken art lessons, Lu Yike had captured each person’s distinctive features perfectly.

This gift was the result of Lu Yike’s secret efforts over several nights – entirely handmade, brimming with his heartfelt blessings.

For a moment, Lu Zhijin swelled with paternal pride. He lifted Lu Yike into his arms, kissed the little one’s cheek, and said sincerely:

Thank you, Ke Ke. Daddy loves it very much.

I’m glad you like it! May you stay healthy and have smooth sailing in everything! Lu Yike replied shyly, tugging at his own curly hair.

Lu Zhijin disliked noisy gatherings and detested insincere interactions with acquaintances, so his birthdays were always celebrated quietly each year.

Song Shimu led him to the walk-in closet, took out a new outfit for him, then grabbed his collar and stood on her toes to kiss his handsome thin lips, saying softly:

Today, you belong to me alone.

Lu Zhijin raised an eyebrow, anticipating his wife’s arrangements.

Breakfast was simple – a heart-shaped fried egg, a smiling face formed from ham slices, and sandwiches. Aunt Zhao explained with a smile:

Madam got up early specially to make these.

Song Shimu wasn’t particularly skilled at cooking, having burned several eggs earlier that morning before finally achieving this successful one.

Then I must finish every bit of this loving breakfast my wife made.

Though the fried egg was slightly undercooked in the middle, Lu Zhijin didn’t mind at all. Without changing his expression, he ate it contentedly.

When the doorbell rang, Song Shimu happily went to answer it, returning with a large bouquet of fiery red roses.

For Mr. Lu – to remind you that you are loved, and that men can receive flowers too.

Lu Zhijin couldn’t quite describe this feeling. Everything Song Shimu did seemed simple, yet it moved him deeply. From the moment he opened his eyes, every detail showed the woman saying I love you through her actions.

Mommy and Daddy, have a proper date! Ke Ke will wait for you at Grandma’s house! Lu Yike waved his little hand, wisely offering the day to his parents.

In truth, the two had never experienced a proper date. Activities like shopping and dining were far too ordinary, and brands would deliver clothes directly to their home. With a private theater at their disposal, they had never even visited a cinema.

So today, Song Shimu wanted to experience simple happiness with Lu Zhijin.

Their first stop was a handicraft studio—a pottery workshop.

Song Shimu stood on her tiptoes to help him put on a black apron. The two planned to make a pair of couple teacups for their home.

Lu Zhijin quickly mastered the technique, his well-defined hands skillfully shaping a perfectly formed teacup.

Meanwhile, Song Shimu frowned in frustration, failing several times. The clay seemed to have a mind of its own in her hands, always ending up crooked and misshapen.

Like this—keep your palms steady.

Lu Zhijin embraced her from behind, his large hands enveloping her delicate ones, his head resting on her shoulder. Gradually, a perfectly shaped teacup took form.

Song Shimu turned her head happily to look at Lu Zhijin, her nose brushing against his cheek. They were so close, their breaths mingling, their gazes filled with affection, entwined in an intimate atmosphere.

Song Shimu tilted her head up slightly and gently kissed his cheek.

If we keep looking at each other like this, I might have to clear everyone out of the pottery studio, Lu Zhijin gritted his teeth and whispered.

After the couple teacups were completed, the shop owner fired them for finishing.

Though not as expensive as the ten-thousand-yuan tea sets at home, these would likely become Lu Zhijin’s favorite teacups.

To prevent the little ancestor Lu Yike from getting jealous, they also made a parent-child teacup. Song Shimu thoughtfully prepared one for the Little Prince as well.

In the afternoon, they attended a live house performance. A young singer poured his heart out on stage, and the two nestled closely together like any ordinary couple.

Afterward, they took photo booth pictures at the mall. Lu Zhijin looked satisfied at their photos and promptly placed one in his personal wallet.

Dinner was at Cloud Top Restaurant, reserved by Song Shimu—the very place where they had first confirmed their relationship.

Song Shimu had also booked the same private room from that day, now adorned with blooming flowers enhancing the romantic ambiance.

After Lu Zhijin sat down, Song Shimu suddenly stood up and mysteriously asked him to wait.

She walked over to the piano, tested a few keys, then smiled at Lu Zhijin as lively notes flowed from her fingertips.

Her clear, soothing voice rose, like a gentle breeze sweeping over the hills or a lark singing in the valley.

We stand here today, together as one

You brighten my days just like the sun

When everything around is like stormy weather

We always survive cause we’re in this together

Whoever said that we could never hold on

(Who said we couldn’t last forever)

Doesn’t know I found my star

Baby you are my star

…

[Song excerpt from Darin’s Can’t Stop Love]

Lu Zhijin gazed mesmerized at the elegant woman. Her seaweed-like curls cascaded down her back, her exquisite profile resembling a Greek goddess descended to earth. Her slender, pale fingers danced nimbly across the black and white piano keys.

As the song ended, Song Shimu’s bright eyes gazed tenderly at Lu Zhijin.

A Jin, happy birthday.

Then Song Shimu began playing the cheerful Happy Birthday melody. Service staff wheeled out a small cake before quietly retreating.

The cake wasn’t particularly exquisite. Song Shimu’s face flushed with slight embarrassment as she self-consciously tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

The cake I made is a bit ugly.

Not ugly at all. It’s beautiful.

Lu Zhijin’s heart felt like an overturned honey jar, his entire chest overflowing with indescribable sweetness.

Make a wish.

Lu Zhijin closed his eyes and pressed his palms together. He had always scoffed at such rituals before, but today, he genuinely wanted to make a devout wish to the heavens.

I wish to grow old with Mu Mu and love her for eternity.

With a quick puff, he blew out the candles, plunging the room into momentary darkness before soft candlelight lamps immediately illuminated the space.

When Lu Zhijin opened his eyes, an exquisite necklace dangled before him. Song Shimu blinked her sparkling eyes while gazing at him tenderly.

The necklace suspended from Song Shimu’s fingertips was crafted from white gold. The pendant featured a Star surrounded by blue diamond fragments, with their portraits delicately engraved in the center. The intricate lines and exquisite patterns revealed craftsmanship beyond any ordinary designer.

I’m giving you my most beloved Star.

Song Shimu’s beautiful eyes shimmered with light, reflecting the deeply moved expression on the man’s face.

A Jin, I’m so grateful to fate for bringing you to me. You’ve done so much for me – indulging my girlish fantasies, valuing my every emotion. Despite your proud nature, you’d lower your head for me.

What I’ve done might not compare to even one ten-thousandth of your efforts, but I want you to know that I’m also loving you with one hundred percent of my heart. Not just now, but in the future too.

In the quiet room, their affectionate eyes met and held. Unspoken love wove delicate threads around them until Lu Zhijin stepped forward, unable to resist pulling her into his arms for a passionate kiss.

He was utterly, completely smitten with Song Shimu!
