Chapter 72: Ke Ke Has an Accident

“Ding-ding-ding~ ding-ding-ding~”

After being picked up by the driver, Lu Yike had been happily humming a tune. Carrying his little yellow duck backpack, he swayed like a ballet dancer as he wandered into the kitchen. Spotting Aunt Zhao’s busy figure, he cheerfully asked, “Grandma Zhao, where’s Mom?”

“Mom is in the study helping Dad with work.”

Aunt Zhao smiled at the little milk bun who only reached her thigh and dotingly fed him a piece of cucumber.

Chewing on the cucumber, Lu Yike pouted and complained discontentedly, “Dad is so annoying! He monopolizes Mom every day and doesn’t even hug me when I get back from tutoring!”

Saying this, he lifted his short little legs and went up to the second-floor study, struggling to reach the doorknob.

The affectionate couple was indeed sitting close together with a computer in front of them, though it was unclear what they were doing.

“My precious is back!” Song Shimu beamed at Lu Yike.

Lu Yike had intended to keep a stern face, but he couldn’t contain his excitement. The corners of his mouth turned up uncontrollably as he held up two tickets, bouncing over to Song Shimu to show off.

“This prince solemnly invites His Majesty and Her Majesty to attend my performance!”

Song Shimu couldn’t help but laugh at his proud expression. She pulled him onto her lap to look at the tickets, while Lu Zhijin snatched one away. After a casual glance, he looked utterly unimpressed.

“I thought it was some kind of performance. Isn’t this just a store anniversary event?”

Lu Yike learned equestrianism at the Royal Equestrian Center—the same place where Lu Zhijin had once taken Song Shimu. In a few days, it would be the center’s fifth anniversary celebration, and members were invited to attend.

“But I’m the only student participating in the performance!”

Lu Yike was extremely indignant and punched Lu Zhijin with his soft, chubby little fist.

The little rascal was at that age where he took pride in everything, but this father-son duo acted like sworn enemies, always bickering.

Fortunately, Song Shimu served as the peacemaker at home; otherwise, the two would have turned the house upside down.

“Wow! Our Ke Ke is so amazing! How is my baby so incredible!”

Song Shimu exclaimed with exaggerated praise, but in her heart, she genuinely felt a mother’s pride for her child.

She couldn’t resist leaning down to kiss Lu Yike’s cheek, making a loud “mwah” sound. Lu Yike was so proud he nearly burst, tilting his little head back with an air of triumph.

“Mom, you have to come.”

“Mom will definitely come watch my baby perform.”

On the day of the event, both Song Shimu and Lu Zhijin went to the Royal Equestrian Center. Though Lu Zhijin had voiced his disdain, his actions spoke otherwise—he personally attended every one of Lu Yike’s activities.

The equestrian center usually catered to the wealthy and elite, and its members were all distinguished figures. Thus, those who graced the anniversary celebration were people often seen on financial news channels.

Lu Yike wore the center’s equestrian outfit—a white shirt, little black boots, and a riding helmet. The little guy looked exceptionally spirited.

He stood obediently to the side, holding a horse—the very one Lu Zhijin had shipped from Europe for his birthday.

Before coming, Lu Yike had repeatedly reminded Song Shimu to bring Little Prince along, insisting that his wife must witness his dashing elegance.

Song Shimu, holding a chubby little golden retriever, found Lu Yike waiting solemnly in the backstage area.

“Mom!”

Lu Yike waved happily, “There are eight more acts until my performance.”

“……”

With eight still to go, why was he so eager to queue up? Song Shimu sighed inwardly at the boundless enthusiasm of children that she couldn’t match.

“Where’s Dad?”

Lu Yike looked around but didn’t see Lu Zhijin, his eyes showing a hint of disappointment.

“Dad is chatting with the stable owner. He’ll come watch you in a moment.”

Lu Yike’s eyes immediately lit up, his attention quickly shifting as he happily tugged at the little pony beside him to introduce to Song Shimu.

“Mom, look! This is my friend Moli.”

It was a deep red little pony with large eyes and strong limbs – a beautiful young horse.

The Little Prince enthusiastically approached, but limited by his height, could only sniff at Moli’s legs with his nose. Moli lifted a front hoof and gently kicked the Little Prince’s bottom, startling him into hiding behind Lu Yike.

Song Shimu’s beautiful eyes curved with amusement as she couldn’t resist teasing Lu Yike.

“Ke Ke, why is the Little Prince your wife? Why don’t you marry Moli instead?”

Lu Yike thought seriously for a moment, stroking his chin with pretended profundity.

“Because I can see the Little Prince every day, but Dad won’t let me bring Moli home. If I married Moli, we’d have a long-distance relationship. That would be too hard – I’d get lovesick!”

Song Shimu laughed at Lu Yike’s earnest response. Her baby was just too adorable.

By the time Lu Zhijin arrived, it was almost time for Lu Yike’s performance.

For this store anniversary event, most performers were the stable’s riding instructors – after all, they were professionals. Lu Yike was the only student participating in the performance, showing that despite his young age, he had indeed learned quite well.

Song Shimu had specially brought a camera just to capture her precious one’s brilliant moments.

As the passionate background music started, Lu Yike appeared riding the reddish-brown Moli. His small figure and cute appearance immediately attracted the audience’s attention, and everyone applauded enthusiastically in encouragement.

Lu Yike squeezed his calves, and Moli began trotting, obediently clearing the obstacles ahead.

There were quite a few obstacles set up in the arena, but they were all basic ones that Lu Yike’s skills could easily handle.

When they reached the middle, the usually docile and obedient Moli suddenly let out a long whinny for some reason, lifting her front hooves and shaking restlessly. Lu Yike was thrown off balance, his body swaying.

The audience immediately paled with fright, and the coach’s expression changed too. Song Shimu, watching the enraged Moli and Lu Yike struggling to maintain balance through her camera viewfinder, instantly changed complexion, her heart rising to her throat.

Lu Zhijin reacted swiftly, his face grim as he vaulted from the spectator stands into the arena, quickly running toward Lu Yike.

Though badly frightened, Lu Yike remained calm, gripping the reins tightly and trying to soothe the little pony beneath him.

“Moli, be good!”

The little pony, agitated by some unknown stimulus, kept prancing restlessly, throwing Lu Yike from side to side.

Lu Zhijin rushed to Lu Yike’s side, deftly grabbing the reins and lightly leaping onto the horse. He held Lu Yike tightly with one arm while grasping the reins with the other.

“Dad!”

“Don’t be afraid, Ke Ke.”

Lu Zhijin’s steady voice instantly reassured Lu Yike, who clung tightly to his father’s arm with his small hands.

Lu Zhijin tightly gripped the horse’s sides with his powerful legs, pulling firmly on the reins as Moli reared up, her front hooves lifting nearly perpendicular to the ground. Stabilizing his core, Lu Zhijin maintained control while onlookers gasped in shock.

“Whoa—”

As Moli’s front hooves returned to the ground and finally calmed somewhat, Lu Zhijin dismounted at the edge of the field with a dark expression, his brows furrowed. In one fluid motion, he swung his long leg over and lifted Lu Yike down from the saddle.

Song Shimu had been waiting anxiously at the sidelines. The moment Lu Yike was on the ground, she immediately gathered the child into her arms.

“Ke Ke, are you alright?”

Lu Yike’s small face was pale with fright. Though he had remained calm during the incident, now safely enveloped in Song Shimu’s concerned embrace, delayed fear set in. He clung tightly to her neck, his little mouth trembling as tears began to fall.

“Don’t cry, don’t cry. It’s alright now, Ke Ke. Everything’s fine, no need to be scared.”

Song Shimu comforted him softly, gently patting his back.

The manager of the equestrian center stood before Lu Zhijin with nervous tension, cold sweat beading on his forehead. He thought desperately, “This is disastrous – we’ve frightened the young master!”

“Master Lu, my deepest apologies! I truly don’t understand how this could have happened. I will definitely provide you with a full explanation!”

The stables had been thoroughly inspected multiple times that morning. All horses had received identical care and feeding over the past two days – there should have been no reason for such an incident to occur.

Lu Zhijin remained stern-faced, his narrow eyes contemplative. The atmosphere grew heavy with tension as the manager stood rigid, nearly ready to drop to his knees.

“You have three days to give me an explanation.”

Lu Zhijin’s icy voice came from above him. A drop of sweat rolled down the manager’s face as he swallowed hard and hurriedly responded.

“Understood, Master Lu! You have my word – I will definitely provide a satisfactory account!”
