Chapter 63: How Dare They Bully His Woman

Song Shimu took Lu Zhijin and Lu Yike out for a stroll. Both were curious about the place where she grew up, so they walked together along the paths she had once tread.

“The ice jelly from this shop is especially delicious. It’s been open for over twenty years. I used to buy a bowl every day after school.”

“The florist at that flower shop was very beautiful. Back then, the boys in my class would take detours just to catch a glimpse of her. I heard she later married a soldier and lived a very happy life.”

“And that…”

…

Following the cobblestone path, Song Shimu slowly retraced the routes of her memories—traces of her teenage years spanning over a decade.

Lu Zhijin listened quietly, imagining a young Song Shimu tiptoeing to buy rose ice jelly, a shy yet excited teenage Song Shimu clutching a bouquet of flowers to bring home to her mother…

It was a life he had never been part of.

“Mom, your hometown is so beautiful!”

Lu Yike gazed at the roses along the roadside and couldn’t help but exclaim in admiration.

In recent years, the town had launched city beautification campaigns, placing special emphasis on urban landscaping. The greening design along the main street was particularly creative, with even the walls adorned with fragrant, blooming roses.

“Just ahead is my high school.”

Unexpectedly, the security guard still recognized Song Shimu.

“I remember you—Song Shimu. Pretty and top of your class,” the guard said with a cheerful laugh as he let them in.

“It seems our Mu Mu was quite the celebrity during her school days.”

Lu Zhijin couldn’t resist teasing her. His Mu Mu must have been the kind of student who gave speeches under the national flag, praised by teachers as the model child from another family.

“Stop teasing me.”

Song Shimu tugged Lu Zhijin forward. Since it was a holiday, the school was nearly empty. The teaching buildings were locked, so they could only wander around the campus.

Suddenly remembering something, Song Shimu led them to the staircase outside the library.

It was a secluded spot, the walls covered in green moss. Climbing the stairs led to a spacious terrace overlooking the entire campus.

“I can’t believe this is still here.”

Song Shimu retrieved a small locked box from a corner, the faint image of Snow White still visible on its surface.

“What’s this?”

“This was mine and Jiayi’s secret spot. Back then, Jiayi was under a lot of academic pressure, so we used this little box to exchange notes and encourage each other.”

Song Shimu gazed tenderly at the box, reminiscing about those dark yet dazzling teenage years.

“Weren’t you and Jiayi in the same class?”

Song Shimu shook her head. “Jiayi was very bright. She was in the gifted youth program.”

“My Mu Mu is just as remarkable.”

Lu Zhijin stepped closer to Song Shimu, watching as she opened the box. The combination was a mix of their two birthdays.

Inside were piles of tiny notes—some complaining about difficult math problems, others griping about the terrible cafeteria food, and still others gossiping about who was dating whom in class. All were fragments of their youth.

“If I had known you back then, these notes would probably be filled with your name.”

Song Shimu looked up, her eyes shimmering with a soft light. Lu Zhijin closed the box for her, his dark eyes resembling a mysterious ancient well.

“If I had known you back then, perhaps this would have been our secret spot.”

Lu Zhijin felt a twinge of jealousy. Not being part of her youth was perhaps his greatest regret.

“If you two had known each other back then, maybe I’d have an older brother or sister by now.”

Lu Yike couldn’t help but sigh. All the kids in his class had siblings, and he felt quite envious being the only child.

The two adults were amused by Lu Yike’s deliberately solemn expression. They ruffled his curly hair and carried him downstairs.

On their way back, a gentle breeze began to blow, dispelling the summer heat. In this humid southern town, such refreshing winds were the best remedy for restless hearts.

“Well, if it isn’t Song Shimu!”

A dark purple sports car was parked by the roadside. In the driver’s seat sat a man wearing punk-style short sleeves, sporting ridiculously dyed hair and sunglasses.

“Has the good student returned to contribute to her hometown?”

The man removed his sunglasses, his eyes filled with contempt and his lips curled in a smug smile. The woman beside him, dressed in a low-cut outfit, covered her mouth as she giggled.

Recognizing the man, Song Shimu pursed her lips, her good mood suddenly ruined.

“Still remember me, Song Shimu?”

“How could our top student remember us? She’s far too important!”

How could Song Shimu forget? This guy had been like an annoying burr stuck to her throughout her youth.

“Mom, who are they? Why do they dress like those bad women?”

Lu Yike, sucking on a lollipop, looked innocent despite his young age, already skilled at feigning disgust.

“You have a child already?”

The man was shocked, then let out a derisive snort. He looked over the man standing beside Song Shimu with utter disdain.

“Weren’t you all high and mighty back then? Seeing how big your child is, did you get married in college? Or was it an unplanned pregnancy?”

“Maybe she didn’t even finish college and got expelled!”

The two bantered back and forth, laughing hysterically in the car.

Lu Zhijin examined the frivolous pair from head to toe, his expression devoid of emotion.

“It’s bad enough that you two lack brains, but it seems you don’t even browse the internet. Song Shimu is my lawfully wedded wife.”

“Lu Zhijin? Who’s that? Have you ever heard of my name—Tang Shuo?”

Leaning against his car, the man couldn’t hold back his laughter. Confidently, he adjusted his hair in the rearview mirror.

“Someone as shabby as you probably hasn’t. From now on, when you see me, Tang Shuo, in G City, make sure to steer clear. Got it?”

Song Shimu felt a headache coming on. Her patience was wearing thin. It was one thing for him to insult her, but how dare he talk down to Lu Zhijin!

“Tang Shuo, I told you to focus on your studies back then, but you wouldn’t listen. Now all you do is boast ignorantly. Stop embarrassing yourself here!”

“Studying? What’s the point? See this sports car? Could you ever afford one in your lifetime?” Tang Shuo couldn’t resist rolling his eyes.

“Indeed, I couldn’t afford one.”

Lu Zhijin glanced at the sports car, his tone lazy and indifferent. “We don’t own any cars in our family worth less than ten million.”

The man was stunned, then let out a scornful laugh. “Stop bragging. You expect me to believe that from someone walking around on foot?”

“Even my toy models are more expensive than your car!”

Lu Yike lifted his little head proudly, standing up for his mother.

“What a bunch of braggarts your family is! Well, in that case, I’m organizing a class reunion tomorrow. Bring your rich husband along.”

“I don’t have time for your silly games.”

Song Shimu wanted nothing to do with him, but Lu Zhijin held her hand.

“No, we’ll definitely be there on time tomorrow.”

Song Shimu stared in astonishment at her serious-faced husband. After Tang Shuo drove off, she complained with a pout.

“Why did you agree? There’s no need to stoop to his level!”

“I won’t let my wife be disrespected.”

Lu Zhijin gently tucked her stray hair behind her ear, his eyes brimming with tenderness.

“That guy bullied you in high school?”

“It wasn’t really bullying—he was just insane!”

Song Shimu had been pretty since childhood, which naturally attracted plenty of unwanted attention. Tang Shuo was one such admirer.

He wasn’t academically gifted, but his family’s modest wealth secured him a spot at First High School. After catching just one glimpse of Song Shimu, he became obsessed and launched an relentless pursuit.

Back then, Song Shimu hadn’t yet awakened to romance and simply found him annoying—especially his pretentious behavior. He’d stand at her classroom door daily, mimicking idol drama protagonists while spouting cringeworthy lines.

Every time Tang Shuo appeared, the class would erupt in laughter. Song Shimu always maintained a stoic expression, having rejected him numerous times. Yet he remained undeterred, convinced she was playing hard to get.

After two months of futile efforts, Tang Shuo—embarrassed before his friends—stormed into Song Shimu’s classroom in a rage, accusing her of being stuck-up.

He immediately started dating a busty girl, flaunting the relationship in front of Song Shimu while spreading rumors at school that she regretted rejecting him and was now pestering him.

Song Shimu simply couldn’t be bothered with him, turning a blind eye and deaf ear to it all.

Eventually, Sun Jiayi caught wind of the situation. She rushed all the way from the gifted class to Tang Shuo’s classroom—while the teacher was still lecturing—marched straight to his desk, and slapped him across the face.

“A toad lusting after swan flesh!”

The entire class froze. Sun Jiayi spun around and strode out proudly. From that day on, Tang Shuo held a grudge against them.

“Then we’ll have to teach him a proper lesson.”

Lu Zhijin gently massaged Song Shimu’s earlobe, his eyes darkening. How dare someone bully his woman?
