Chapter 47: The Woman Unfit for High Society

Master Lu’s birthday was approaching, an event significant not only to the Lu family but to the entire city of Haishi. Everyone sought to seize this opportunity to climb the social ladder by attaching themselves to the influential Lu family.

Lu Zhijin had reserved the Chunyuan Restaurant in advance, preparing meticulously for the occasion. As the lady of the Lu household, Song Shimu had much to attend to, reviewing the guest list for the banquet.

You’ve been working hard lately, Lu Zhijin murmured, embracing Song Shimu from behind as they settled on the sofa. He buried his face in the curve of her neck, inhaling her sweet, soft fragrance. She was like an intoxicating poppy, leaving him utterly captivated.

It’s no trouble at all. This is what I should be doing, Song Shimu replied, turning her head to gaze tenderly at the tall man. Their noses brushed, and threads of affection intertwined through their locked eyes. The atmosphere grew intimate, drawing them unconsciously closer until their lips met in a passionate kiss. They only broke apart when the sound of slippers pattering down the stairs reached them.

Lu Yike, holding a slightly grown-up Little Prince, rolled his eyes in habitual exasperation, his tone dripping with sour disdain. Here we go again! A grown man, always clinging to my mom!

She’s my wife. Got a problem with that? Lu Zhijin retorted, glancing sideways at the little boy.

Of course I do, but what’s the use? You never listen anyway!

Good that you know it, Lu Zhijin replied smugly.

Song Shimu watched the bickering father and son with an amused smile.

Soon, the day of Old Lu’s birthday banquet arrived.

The owner of Chunyuan Restaurant, shrewd as ever, had offered the venue free of charge. He was no fool—currying favor with the Lu family would yield far greater benefits in the long run.

Guests streamed in continuously to offer their congratulations. Lu Zhijin stood tall and handsome in a black Handicraft suit that accentuated his height and lean legs. Beside him, Song Shimu wore a champagne-colored strapless gown with a skirt that flared like unfolding lotus leaves. The soft fabric clung to her slender legs when she stood still, elegantly highlighting her figure.

The couple greeted arriving guests at the entrance with polite nods when a wave of hushed exclamations arose.

A young man in an iron-gray suit stepped forward, his phoenix eyes slightly upturned. Placing his gift on the table, he spoke in his usual flippant tone. Young Master Lu, wishing the esteemed Master Lu robust health and boundless longevity.

Thank you for your kind wishes, President Lin, Lu Zhijin responded.

The two men, similar in height and both radiating exceptional poise, stood facing each other and shook hands briefly. One exuded steady composure and a stern demeanor, while the other carried an air of lazy elegance with his captivating phoenix eyes.

Lin Xun feigned surprise as if noticing Song Shimu for the first time, raising an eyebrow. Teacher Song? What are you doing here?

Song Shimu was equally taken aback to see Lin Xun there. Far Ocean Group had only recently established itself in Haishi, yet he had already connected with the Lu family. Before she could respond, the man beside her subtly furrowed his brow and possessively wrapped an arm around her waist.

President Lin, you know my wife? Lu Zhijin inquired.

Lin Xun arched his eyebrow again, seemingly unbothered by his own transparent act. Teacher Song is your wife? Well, isn’t that a surprise! It seems fate has brought us all together. The Technology Building I donated happens to be located at your wife’s kindergarten.

So you’re the one who appreciated my wife’s public lesson, Lu Zhijin remarked coolly.

Lu Zhijin subtly voiced his grievances on behalf of Song Shimu, realizing it was this man who caused his wife to stay up late every night preparing lessons. However, Lin Xun seemed oblivious to the underlying meaning in his words, flashing an exceptionally bright smile.

Mrs. Lu’s class is truly lively and engaging. I couldn’t help but become completely absorbed—it was absolutely brilliant.

Thank you for your appreciation, President Lin. Please come inside.

Song Shimu smiled as she interrupted their conversation. Lin Xun was a shrewd businessman who enjoyed verbal sparring, and Lu Zhijin disliked dealing with such people.

As soon as Lin Xun left, Song Shimu felt a tightening around her waist as she was pulled into Lu Zhijin’s embrace. His deep voice, tinged with jealousy, whispered in her ear:

I don’t like the way he looks at you.

Those seemingly indifferent eyes held a hidden, predatory gaze when fixed on Song Shimu. Lu Zhijin’s alert radar had accurately detected this transgressive glance.

Song Shimu laughed at his overreaction and unnecessary jealousy. What gaze? He’s a major business executive—what could he possibly want with me?

I don’t care. Limit your interactions with him from now on. Young Master Lu declared possessively.

Alright, alright.

As the banquet began, Old Lu, as the host, made brief opening remarks. His legs, injured in his youth, prevented him from standing long, so Lu Zhijin took over for the remainder of the event.

A constant stream of guests came to toast. Lu Zhijin maintained an aloof expression, one hand in his pocket while elegantly holding a wine glass with the other, listening to their hypocritical flattery.

A Jin, drink less.

Song Shimu gently took the glass from Lu Zhijin’s hand. With so many well-wishers tonight, he had unconsciously consumed quite a lot.

Though Lu Zhijin appeared sober and normal, he nodded obediently at his wife’s concern. His gaze softened under her attention, prompting nearby guests to tease, Young Master Lu and his wife are truly devoted. May I ask what distinguished position Madam holds?

Their century wedding had captivated the nation. Given the Lu family’s prominent status, everyone wondered what background could match such prestige and what kind of person could catch Young Master Lu’s eye.

Distinguished position? She’s just a kindergarten teacher.

A shrill, mocking voice suddenly cut through, eliciting light laughter from the crowd.

Lu Zhijin’s expression immediately turned icy. He lazily lifted his eyelids, exuding the intimidating authority of someone in power as he coldly stared at the woman who spoke.

The speaker was a young woman in a pale blue evening dress, her makeup flawless but features sharp and unkind. With a contemptuous smirk twisting her lips, she clung to Zhang Hanzhi, who watched with amusement.

Is there a problem?

Lu Zhijin asked slowly, his tone deceptively calm, like a venomous snake flicking its tongue while leisurely observing trapped prey unaware of its predicament.

The woman grew uncomfortable under his gaze, swallowing nervously before defiantly continuing:

With your status, Young Master Lu, you could have any woman. Why settle for someone so… unrefined? Did she scheme her way into this?

Holding Song Shimu’s hand, Lu Zhijin picked up a plate of matcha mousse cake just delivered by a waiter and brought it to her lips, feeding her the dessert she loved most. His eyes overflowed with tenderness, yet his voice carried a chilling danger.

Since when does Lu Zhijin need others meddling in his choice of women? Now even random people dare to point fingers in front of me?

The woman immediately paled, straightening her posture with anxious eyes as she stammered in panic, No, Young Master Lu, I…

What’s wrong with being a kindergarten teacher? Shouldn’t respectable professions deserve respect?

Lu Zhijin raised his thumb to gently wipe the cream from Song Shimu’s lips, then turned to the woman with a gaze that regarded her like a dying ant—utterly indifferent.

As far as I know, Miss Wang’s younger brother is currently attending Anyang International Kindergarten. But since Miss Wang holds such contempt for the profession, your brother need not continue his studies in Haishi.

Chen Sheng, standing behind him, caught Lu Zhijin’s glance and nodded in acknowledgment before immediately exiting the banquet to handle the matter.

The surrounding guests fell into terrified silence. They all knew that beneath Lu Zhijin’s languid exterior, he was truly angered!

The warning in his words wasn’t merely about the Wang family’s son losing his schooling—it meant that starting tonight, the Wang family would cease to exist in Haishi!

The woman stiffened, trembling as she stepped forward to grasp Lu Zhijin’s sleeve, only to be shaken off.

Young Master Lu, please! I was wrong! I shouldn’t have commented on your private affairs. I beg you to spare my family!

Lu Zhijin looked down at her coldly, his voice dripping with frost as if addressing worthless vermin.

You still don’t understand where you went wrong.

The woman suddenly comprehended, turning to clutch Song Shimu’s hand while dropping to her knees, her body shaking uncontrollably.

Her family had struggled for years to establish themselves in Haishi. With her engagement imminent, she knew her father would never forgive her if this happened. Her fiancé’s family would certainly break off the engagement—her life would be ruined.

Madam Lu, I apologize! I spoke out of turn! I didn’t mean your status was inferior—I overstepped! I deserve death! Please intercede for me, beg Young Master Lu to spare my family!

Song Shimu watched the farce calmly, gently removing the woman’s hand while maintaining a dignified smile.

I’m sorry, Miss Wang. I don’t interfere with A Jin’s decisions. And—

Song Shimu paused, looking down at the terrified woman with compassionate gentleness, her tone soft yet firm.

All professions deserve equal respect. I believe I merit more dignity than Miss Wang, who spends her days drowning in decadence.
