Chapter 46: A Jin Has Only Ever Liked You

Song Shimu initially thought this minor incident would quickly pass, but she never expected Lu’s father and mother to seek her out proactively. It happened during her lunch break when the security guard informed her that someone was looking for her. When Song Shimu went to check, she found Lu’s father and mother standing at the kindergarten entrance.

Dad, Mom, what brings you here?

Lu’s mother wore a dark silk maxi dress with a leather handbag draped over her arm, exuding the elegance of a noblewoman. Old Lu’s authoritative face showed a hint of guilt, as if he couldn’t quite meet Song Shimu’s gaze directly.

Mu Mu, your father and I were out handling some matters and happened to pass by your school. We thought we’d drop by to see you. We hope we’re not disturbing you?

Not at all, not at all. Song Shimu quickly waved her hands. She felt genuinely embarrassed that the elderly couple had waited under the scorching sun for her.

I’ve reserved a restaurant nearby. Let’s go have a meal together.

Lu’s mother linked arms with Song Shimu as the chauffeur dutifully opened the car door, parking near an upscale restaurant with an elegant ambiance and luxurious decor.

With just one glance, Song Shimu understood the situation clearly. This restaurant was expensive, and without a reservation made at least a day in advance, it would be impossible to get a table. The Lu elders likely hadn’t just been passing by – they had specifically come to find her. As for their purpose, she already had a good idea.

After the waiter served their ordered dishes in the private room and quietly withdrew, Lu’s father and mother maintained proper smiles across the table but barely touched their food. Song Shimu didn’t want to directly expose their intentions, so she played along, pretending not to know what was happening.

Mu Mu.

Lu’s mother suddenly spoke, her expression somewhat constrained. Song Shimu’s heart skipped a beat, thinking here it comes.

Since Hanzhi arrived recently, quite a few things have happened. A Jin must have told you about Hanzhi’s background. She’s practically a child we watched grow up, so we’ve been particularly tolerant of her.

Song Shimu listened patiently without interrupting. She understood everything Lu’s mother was saying. Old Lu was a man who valued loyalty and relationships, and taking care of a comrade’s orphaned child was an unspoken understanding among military personnel. She wasn’t an unreasonable person.

We’ve grown accustomed to indulging Hanzhi but forgot to consider your feelings. You’ve been wronged during this time, and we hope you won’t blame us. We’ll be more mindful going forward.

Song Shimu’s mouth opened slightly in astonishment. She had assumed Lu’s father and mother had come to speak on Zhang Hanzhi’s behalf, to persuade her to let Hanzhi work at Lu Zhijin’s company. Instead, they had come to apologize personally because of Lu Zhijin’s reminder yesterday.

Mu Mu, it was my oversight as your father-in-law. Don’t worry, this won’t happen again. I’ll find another solution for the work matter and won’t let Hanzhi disturb you two anymore. You are the daughter-in-law I, Lu Xiangting, have acknowledged, and that will never change in this lifetime. Lu’s father spoke with sincere determination, his deep eyes conveying a solemn promise.

It’s really alright, Mom and Dad.

Song Shimu felt both flattered and deeply moved. She had prepared herself for a difficult confrontation, never expecting they would become her supporters instead. This feeling of being cherished struck directly at her vulnerabilities, making her heart feel as if it were soaking in warm water, melting completely.

A Jin was making a fuss over nothing. You really don’t need to worry about it.

How could we not? You’re our precious daughter too. We can’t let you endure things because of our generation’s unresolved matters.

Lu’s mother affectionately held Song Shimu’s hand, her eyes filled with heartfelt concern.

That child Hanzhi has always clung to A Jin since childhood, but rest assured, I know my son well. A Jin has never had feelings for her. The way he looks at you has never appeared when he looks at anyone else.

I, Lu Xiangting, am not a man without principles or boundaries. Comradeship is comradeship, but it won’t affect our family’s happiness.

The two elders had braved the scorching sun all noon without eating anything, just to give Song Shimu an explanation, to reassure her, to show her respect, and not let her suffer any grievances.

Song Shimu thought, she had truly married the right person and chosen the right family.

Song Shimu’s lunch break was relatively short because she needed to supervise the children during their meal and nap time. After clearing up the misunderstanding, Song Shimu bid farewell to her parents and returned to the kindergarten.

Watching Song Shimu’s retreating figure, Lu’s mother breathed a sigh of relief and gave Lu’s father a coquettish glare.

It’s all your fault! Fortunately, Mu Mu is gentle and understanding. If I lost my good daughter-in-law because of this, I wouldn’t let you off!

Alright, alright, it’s all my fault. Didn’t I come to apologize? I’ll be more careful in the future.Old Lu, who was stern and cold outside, was actually henpecked at home and quickly served his wife a piece of shrimp.

Sigh, but that child Hanzhi is also… it’s not a solution for her to keep making trouble like this. Lu’s mother looked worried.

I’ll arrange a proper job for her, then she won’t have time to make trouble. Don’t worry.

At the kindergarten, the children lay quietly on their small beds for their afternoon nap. The room temperature was comfortable, the poplar trees outside rustled with lush green leaves, the weather was clear with no clouds in sight—a beautiful day.

Song Shimu quietly opened the door to the restroom to check on the napping status of the children in her class. Lu Yike’s sharp little ears recognized his mother’s footsteps, and his eyes instantly widened with curiosity. He sneakily crawled up and asked her, Mom, where did you go?

Why aren’t you asleep yet? Song Shimu picked up Lu Yike and casually felt his forehead to check if he was sweating.

I can’t sleep without seeing you. Where did you go?

Grandpa and grandma passed by, so I went to see them.

Then why didn’t you call me?Lu Yike pouted aggrievedly.

Because we had adult topics to discuss.

Lu Yike was quite clever. Upon hearing this, his eyes lit up, and he asked with a grin, Was it about the bad woman?

Song Shimu couldn’t help but laugh. The little milk bun was quite smart. She gently pinched his wonderfully soft cheek and educated him, What bad woman? That’s Auntie Hanzhi.

I don’t want to call her auntie! She bullies Mom!

Oh, my baby is so protective of Mom. Song Shimu lowered her head and gently rubbed his nose with hers.

Lu Yike smiled contentedly and hugged Song Shimu’s neck, acting spoiled.

Of course! I’m Mom’s favorite little treasure!

When Lu Zhijin came to pick up his wife from work in the evening and heard about this, he nodded maturely and commented profoundly, That’s more like it.

No one was allowed to make his wife suffer!

Late at night, in a top-floor office of a building in Haishi.

Lin Xun leaned back in his swivel chair, holding a photo in his hand. His eyes gazed at the woman in the photo as if she were prey, while listening to his subordinate’s report.

Lu Yike is not the child of Lu Zhijin and Song Shimu. Most likely, she is the daughter of the eldest daughter of the Lu family, who once dated Sui Zekai from the Sui family. It is said that during Old Sui’s birthday banquet recently, Sui Zekai personally stated that Lu Yike is his child.

During that period, the Sui family was fighting over inheritance, and Sui Zekai wanted an additional bargaining chip. Therefore, Lu Zhijin probably married Song Shimu to protect his sister’s child.

Lin Xun gazed profoundly at the photo of Song Shimu, lost in thought. The photo was somewhat blurry, a secretly taken side profile. Song Shimu was sitting on a bench in the square feeding pigeons, her curly hair cascading over her shoulders. She was smiling sweetly, her eyes gentle and tender.

Then they might not have had feelings for each other.
