Chapter 45: Mu Mu Feels Wronged

On his way home from work, Lu Zhijin received a call from his mother asking him to bring Song Shimu and Lu Yike back to the old residence for dinner that evening.

Since Lu Yike’s kindergarten had just started, Lu Zhijin happened to be able to pick them up on his way. Lu Yike was constantly thinking about his wife.

I need to go home and get Little Prince. Without me, he’ll be too lovesick to eat.

Aunt Zhao is there, he won’t go hungry.

But I want to be with him.

Even couples need their own space. If you stick together all the time, he’ll get tired of you.

Really? Then why do you stick with Mom every day?

Mom and I are different. Our love transcends the universe.

While driving, Lu Zhijin spouted this nonsense with a straight face. It was Song Shimu who couldn’t take it anymore and tried to correct Lu Yike’s worldview.

Ke Ke, Little Prince is your family and will always be with you, but your wife will appear in the future—someone you’ll be willing to give everything for.

But I’m willing to give everything for Little Prince right now. Lu Yike pursed his lips, his grape-like eyes sparkling with unusual seriousness as he made a lifelong promise.

Lu Zhijin chuckled beside them. Song Shimu smacked him in frustration, scolding angrily, It’s all your fault! What if Ke Ke can’t find a wife in the future?

It’s fine. We’re nurturing his compassion for small animals.

Lu Zhijin still didn’t see anything wrong with his behavior.

When the family of three arrived at the military retirement home and entered, they immediately saw a woman sitting on the sofa. Lu Zhijin’s expression instantly turned cold, and he frowned displeased.

Wasn’t this supposed to be a family dinner? Why is she here?!

Su Yunrong pulled Song Shimu to sit down, shooting Lu Zhijin a glare. What kind of talk is that! Hanzhi is practically family too.

If that’s the case, we’re leaving. Lu Zhijin said, reaching to take Song Shimu’s hand, but she stopped him and gave him a reassuring look.

Just then, Old Lu came downstairs, his expression stern and his tone authoritative.

What, are we not important enough to have you stay?

Zhang Hanzhi sat on the sofa, looking timidly at Lu Zhijin. She pursed her lips and spoke in a deliberately pitiful tone.

A Jin, I’m sorry. Last time, I thought we were family so I acted that way. Please don’t blame me.

You overestimate yourself.

Yeah! Does being family mean you can rummage through other people’s things?! Lu Yike’s eyes darted, and he threw himself into Su Yunrong’s arms to complain.

Grandma, last time this bad woman went through Mom’s wardrobe and even wore Mom’s pajamas to seduce Dad!

Su Yunrong’s smile froze on her face. Zhang Hanzhi had never mentioned these details—they had only seen her return in tears, assuming Lu Zhijin had coldly sent her away again. But Lu Yike was too young to lie.

Zhang Hanzhi looked embarrassed, blinking as she tried to argue and shift blame. What are you talking about? I stood outside for hours, and Song Shimu wouldn’t let me in. I was so hot, so I changed into something cooler.

Song Shimu found herself unjustly implicated. She curved her lips into a gentle smile, her tone as soothing as a mountain breeze.

Miss Zhang, our call lasted barely two minutes, and I immediately asked the guard to let you in. It’s only been a few days—how has your memory become so muddled?

Yeah, yeah! You’re just a liar!Lu Yike chimed in, hugging Su Yunrong and acting cute.

Grandma, I hate her!

Zhang Hanzhi gritted her teeth with a resentful expression. Lu’s mother awkwardly explained, Children speak without thinking.

Lu’s father had a deep furrow between his brows, his expression stern as he spoke lightly, Let’s eat.

At the dining table, Lu’s mother seemed hesitant to speak. Eventually, Lu’s father couldn’t stand it anymore, put down his bowl, leaned back in his chair, and looked at Lu Zhijin with a tone carrying the commanding manner habitual from his military days.

Hanzhi doesn’t have a job here. Arrange something for her at the company.

Upon hearing this, Lu Zhijin’s hand holding the bowl paused momentarily before he set it down and sat up straight to face his father.

Chen Sheng manages the company. If she wants to join, she should go through the interview process and get in on her own merit.

Isn’t it just a word from you! Let Hanzhi do some basic work.

Basic positions are already filled. We don’t need to support idle people.

You!

Lu’s father’s eyes burned with anger as he stared sternly at Lu Zhijin. His son’s expression mirrored his own – resolute and unwavering, truly proving they were father and son.

Alright now, A Jin has been in the military all along and doesn’t know much about company affairs. I’ll ask my friends to help Hanzhi find a job, Lu’s mother interjected to mediate.

But Zhang Hanzhi refused to comply, twisting her body coquettishly. Auntie, if I can’t join the company, could I go help at A Jin’s military unit instead?

Do you think the military is child’s play? Lu Zhijin’s eyes turned frosty, flashing with sharp disapproval as he looked at her with utter annoyance. Lu’s mother appeared deeply embarrassed.

Let’s take our time searching. I’ll also ask around for opportunities, Song Shimu offered, finding the atmosphere quite uncomfortable. She wiped the rice grains from Lu Yike’s face while speaking. The frightened child had turned pale, eating small mouthfuls with his head bowed, always intimidated by the stern Lu father.

I don’t need your help. Since when would you kindly assist me? Zhang Hanzhi crossed her arms, shooting Song Shimu a malicious glance with arrogant tone and contemptuous eyes.

Lu Zhijin stood up abruptly, his voice icy and menacing, eyes radiating terrifying intensity. Zhang Hanzhi, show some respect!

What are you doing! Lu’s father slammed the table heavily.

Waaahhh— Lu Yike suddenly burst into tears, throwing himself into Song Shimu’s arms while crying Mommy I want to go home. As Song Shimu gently comforted him, Lu’s mother became heartbroken and told the father-son pair to stop arguing.

Turning to his father, Lu Zhijin struggled to contain his rage, his hands clenched into fists beneath the table.

Dad, I know you value loyalty and righteousness. But regarding that combat operation back then, numerous experts have evaluated and confirmed that your command was correct. Military sacrifices are inevitable – you shouldn’t burden yourself with such heavy guilt.

If you want to care for a fallen comrade’s orphan out of camaraderie, that’s completely acceptable. But there must be limits, otherwise she’ll become this lawless!

After speaking, Lu Zhijin took Song Shimu and Lu Yike to leave. After two steps, he paused slightly, turning his head without looking directly at his father, his tone serious and solemn, with a barely detectable hint of restrained compassion.

Also, we all know what schemes she harbors. But Dad, have you considered Mu Mu’s feelings in all this?

Old Lu, having devoted his life to military service with an unyielding character, felt suddenly enlightened by Lu Zhijin’s words. His eyes trembled slightly as he glanced somewhat apprehensively at Song Shimu, then lowered his head guiltily and heaved a heavy sigh.

Recently, whenever they encountered Zhang Hanzhi, things always ended rather unpleasantly. Given Old Lu’s status, no one wanted to push things too far. Song Shimu didn’t feel particularly wronged, but Lu Zhijin would grow terribly distressed each time.

A Jin, I’m fine.

Since Lu Zhijin’s heart belonged entirely to her, Song Shimu never paid Zhang Hanzhi any mind. Why bother getting angry with someone who didn’t even qualify as a rival?

Let’s not come back here anymore. We’ll only return after Zhang Hanzhi leaves.

Seeing Lu Zhijin suddenly act so childish made Song Shimu laugh. She interlaced her fingers with his.

But what about your parents? Ke Ke needs to see his grandparents too.

Drive the bad woman away quickly!

Lu Yike looked completely normal now, neither crying nor making a fuss. He waved his little fists indignantly.

Why aren’t you crying anymore?

Song Shimu looked at him teasingly. She’d finally figured out Lu Yike’s acting skills – the little fellow was quite the performer, playing dumb whenever he sensed trouble.

Lu Yike shyly lowered his head and scratched his curly hair. Hehe, I just saw that Mom wasn’t eating happily!

The clever child kept his whole heart focused on Song Shimu. Knowing his mother had no appetite in such situations and that his father was unhappy too, he’d simply taken it upon himself to solve the problem.

Lu Yike happily grabbed Song Shimu’s hand, bouncing with excitement. Come on, Mom! I’ll treat you to something delicious!
