Chapter 39: Father and Son Compete for Wife in Jealousy

Oh! So you still remember to come back! Do you still remember Lu Yike by the Daming Lake!

Lu Yike sat on the sofa with his arms crossed, glaring resentfully at the newlyweds who returned radiant and full of energy.

Su Yunrong joyfully took the gift Song Shimu bought for her and, without looking up, said, The little one is jealous. He’s been nagging in my ear every day. Hurry up and comfort him!

Song Shimu picked up Lu Yike and planted a kiss on his soft little cheek. Lu Yike tried hard to suppress his rising smile, but his delighted expression gave him away.

How could Mom forget her precious boy? I’ve been thinking of you every moment. Here, see if you like the clothes I bought for you?

Lu Yike’s attention was immediately diverted. He grabbed the new clothes and danced around excitedly.

Thank you, Mom! I knew you loved me the most!

His short legs pattered as he ran into his room. A few minutes later, he emerged wearing the new outfit, standing tall with his hands behind his back and his little chest puffed out proudly. He strutted around in circles in front of everyone, not stopping until he had received compliments from each person.

Then he walked up to Lu Zhijin to show off. Mom bought this for me. You don’t have one, do you?

Lu Zhijin couldn’t be bothered to deal with the little show-off. He picked up Old Lu’s newspaper from the coffee table without even looking up.

No, but my wife has been with me all these days.

How annoying!

Lu Yike scrunched up his little face, lifted his short leg, and stomped on Lu Zhijin’s foot before darting back into his room before anyone could react.

Ouch— Lu Yike, are you asking for a spanking?

Hahaha… Ke Ke is already learning to steal your wife, Lu’s mother teased Lu Zhijin with a laugh.

They had chosen to return at this time not only because of Lu Zhijin’s work but, more importantly, because Lu Yike’s birthday was approaching.

Given Lu Yike’s unique background, the Lu family had never made a grand celebration out of his birthday. Moreover, they didn’t want his birthday to become an occasion for adult transactions or social climbing. So, every year, they celebrated as a family, and this year was no exception. Father Song and Mother Song had even made a special trip from their hometown to join them.

On the day of his birthday, Lu Yike woke up early, bursting with excitement. As soon as he opened his eyes, he saw his mom and dad lying on either side of him.

Ke Ke, happy birthday!

Their eyes filled with tenderness, they leaned down and kissed his cheeks. The three of them lay happily together in bed.

Song Shimu brought out her gift: a smartwatch developed in Germany. It was entirely black and looked like a luxurious mechanical watch. Pressing the button on the side would turn it into an electronic screen capable of making calls, sending messages, and more. It was fully functional and far more advanced than his previous Little Genius phone watch.

Thank you, Mom! I love it!

Lu Yike happily kissed Song Shimu, then blinked his big eyes and looked expectantly at Lu Zhijin. But seeing his father empty-handed, his little eyebrows drooped, and he pouted, mumbling in a muffled voice as if to comfort him.

Even though Dad didn’t buy me a gift, I still love you.

Lu Zhijin suppressed a laugh and gently tapped Lu Yike’s smooth forehead with a bent finger.

I bought you a horse at the ranch. Your riding instructor will take you to see it next time.

Lu Yike’s eyes instantly lit up. Overjoyed, he threw his arms around Lu Zhijin’s neck and gave him a loud, smacking kiss.

Thank you, Dad! I knew you could love me even more!

And there’s this.

Lu Zhijin brought out a fluffy, milky little puppy from behind his back—a light-colored golden retriever, looking only about a month old.

Wow!

Lu Yike clasped his hands together excitedly, his eyes sparkling like bright stars as he gazed carefully at the adorable little puppy before him.

You’ve been asking for one every year, but you were too young before and wouldn’t know how to take care of a dog. Now that you’re a year older, you must take responsibility for this puppy’s entire life, understand?

Mm!

Lu Yike nodded seriously, his gaze firm, patting his little chest as he vowed, I will definitely take good care of him! From now on, he’ll be my little brother!

He’s male.

Oh, then he’s my little brother!

Give him a name.

Hmm— Lu Yike stroked his chin thoughtfully. Let’s call him Little Prince.

Song Shimu had recently been reading The Little Prince to him, and Lu Yike loved the story very much.

They still had to go to the old house. After getting up and washing, Lu Yike put on the shirt and shorts Song Shimu had bought for him, along with a pair of little black leather shoes, happily shaking his head as he headed off to celebrate his birthday.

The military retirement home was quite lively too. All four elders were there—Lu’s mother and Mother Song busy in the kitchen, while the two old men played chess by the window. Old Lu occasionally tried to take back moves when no one was looking.

Old Lu, you know after all these years as a teacher, I can always tell when my students are up to something sneaky.

Ah, I just didn’t look carefully enough earlier!

Old Lu grumpily put the hidden chess piece back.

Lu Yike had also invited a few good friends from kindergarten to come play. A little girl with two carefully braided pigtails, wearing a pale yellow princess dress, shyly lifted her skirt and asked Lu Yike:

Ke Ke, do you think my dress is pretty?

Lu Yike was seriously introducing his puppy to others and didn’t even look up at the question.

Not as pretty as the clothes my mom bought me.

You’re such a big dummy! The little girl stamped her foot angrily and ran off.

Your son isn’t as smooth with words as you are. Song Shimu teased Lu Zhijin beside her with a playful glint in her eyes.

Of course, my wife is the best in the world—no one else can compare. Lu Zhijin’s tone was earnest.

Lunch was exceptionally lavish. Lu’s mother and Mother Song seemed to be competing in their cooking skills, nearly presenting a full imperial banquet.

Lu Zhijin had ordered a three-tiered birthday cake for the children, with a number five candle on top. Everyone sang Happy Birthday with warm wishes in their eyes.

Lu Yike stood before the cake with hands clasped, eyes closed as he made a wish. His fair face and curled eyelashes made him look like an exquisite doll.

I wish for Daddy, Mommy, Grandpa, Grandma, Grandpa, and Grandma to be healthy and always love me!

Whoosh— The candle went out, and the wish was sealed.

Happy birthday!

The celebration continued joyfully in a harmonious atmosphere. Just then, the doorbell rang. The housekeeper smiled and said she would get it.

Huh? May I ask who you’re looking for?

The visitor ignored her, pushing past and walking straight in. The sound of rolling suitcase wheels drew everyone’s attention. As heads turned, the lively atmosphere suddenly grew quiet. Song Shimu, curious, instinctively glanced at Lu Zhijin, only to find his expression somewhat strange.

The newcomer was a young woman—tall and slender, dressed in a khaki-colored blazer and short skirt. A narrow black leather belt accentuated her slim waist, while below stretched a pair of straight, pale legs ending in high-heeled ankle boots.

The woman had long black hair that reached her waist, a strikingly beautiful face that was small and delicate. She wore a pair of oversized sunglasses and an expensive white ladies’ watch. Raising her hand to remove the sunglasses, she curved her crimson lips into a radiant smile.

A Jin, long time no see!
