Chapter 124: The Transaction

The money Song Shimu had someone retrieve was actually left to her son by Lu Yike’s mother, Lu Zhimian.

Since Lu Yike was still young, Song Shimu and Lu Zhijin were entrusted with managing the funds. Withdrawing the money required both of them to appear and consent.

So when the fat man went to withdraw the money with great excitement, he presented Song Shimu’s ID card. His face full of menacing flesh, he fiercely told the staff he was there to collect the money on behalf of Mrs. Lu.

For someone of the Lu family’s esteemed status, the manager handled the transaction directly. The manager was shrewd and could tell the man didn’t seem trustworthy.

To be safe, he calmly reassured the fat man, explaining that the large amount of money involved complicated procedures and asked him to wait briefly.

The manager then turned around and called Lu Zhijin to confirm. Upon receiving the message, Lu Zhijin recognized it as a signal from Song Shimu and immediately dispatched a team to arrest the man.

By tracking the fat man’s movements, they pinpointed Wu Yongwan’s hideout.

It was in a dilapidated tube-shaped apartment building in the old city district. The environment was cramped, with narrow corridors, and the residents were mostly holdouts unwilling to leave their homeland.

Belongings were piled outside doors, the dark, grimy walls covered in small ads, and the paint on the stair railings had completely peeled off.

Lu Zhijin’s troops quietly infiltrated the building. Leading the team himself, he wore black combat gear, his eyes filled with ferocity.

However, Wu Yongwan’s subordinates, having long been stationed in the Golden Triangle, were well-versed in police tactics. Their reconnaissance skills were exceptional.

Even such subtle changes were detected by their alert underlings.

Wu Yongwan glared furiously at Song Shimu, his eyes wide with rage. There was no time to punish her now; he had to flee with his men.

There was a small door at the back of the building. They bound Song Shimu’s hands and feet, taped her mouth, and one of them carried her as they escaped through the rear.

They dodged and hid along the way, narrowly avoiding encounters several times, and finally managed to get into a car.

Colonel, over there!

Someone spotted a moving vehicle below that closely resembled the van they had been pursuing.

Lu Zhijin narrowed his eyes, a dangerous glint in them, his tone sinister.

After them!

Wu Yongwan seemed exceptionally familiar with the area’s roads. He swerved into several narrow alleys, flooring the accelerator and recklessly plowing through, disregarding pedestrians’ safety.

Several pedestrians were injured in the process, while the police vehicles had to carefully avoid them, slowing their pursuit.

Bang—

Lu Zhijin punched the car hood, his head lowered, eyes bloodshot, veins throbbing at his temples.

His face was filled with despair and heavy self-blame.

He had missed such a perfect opportunity to rescue his Mu Mu.

Everyone exchanged uneasy glances, feeling defeated and unsure how to react as they looked at Lu Zhijin.

Colonel, we’re still tracking Wu Yongwan’s trail. It won’t be long…

The man stopped mid-sentence upon seeing Lu Zhijin’s ashen face.

No words of comfort would help now. Only by quickly rescuing Song Shimu could their colonel’s spirit return to his body.

Lu Yike was taken back to Lu’s father’s place. He sat in Lu’s mother’s arms, tears welling in his eyes, his voice trembling as he asked what had happened to his mother.

Lu’s mother wore a worried expression, comforting him by saying his mother had work and would be back in a few days.

But Lu Yike, being clever and sensitive since childhood, was well aware of what had happened. He became listless and lost his appetite.

Even little Lu Chenxi seemed to sense something. Usually so well-behaved, she started crying incessantly.

Driven to desperation, Wu Yongwan fled for his life and hid in a small fishing village. He stared at the calmly composed Song Shimu.

Enraged, he strode over and slapped Song Shimu hard across the face, his eyes bloodshot as he gritted his teeth and cursed.

You bitch! How dare you play me!

Song Shimu’s cheek immediately swelled red from the blow, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth. She gazed coldly at Wu Yongwan as if looking down at an insect.

Just then, an underling rushed over and whispered in Wu Yongwan’s ear that everything was ready.

Wu Yongwan stood before Song Shimu, looking down contemptuously at the stubborn woman.

What a devoted couple you two are! Well then, I’ll let you die together!

Wu Yongwan took out his phone, his eyes filled with desperate ruthlessness, and called Lu Zhijin.

The wait wasn’t long before Lu Zhijin answered.

Hey, Lu Zhijin.

Wu Yongwan’s voice sounded like a demon from hell, carrying an arrogant laughter that tortured the nerves of the person on the other end.

I don’t have time to play cat and mouse with you. Have one billion ready by tomorrow morning, or you can wait to become a widower! Hahahaha!

The veins on Lu Zhijin’s forehead bulged, his dark pupils unreadable. The voice from the phone echoed through every corner of the command center, everyone holding their breath.

Fine. Let me hear my wife’s voice.

Lu Zhijin’s heart had been suspended since yesterday, anxiety overwhelming his mind, yet he forced himself to remain calm.

He desperately wanted to hear Song Shimu’s voice – his Mu Mu must be so frightened.

Wu Yongwan pressed the phone to Song Shimu’s ear, gripping her hair tightly as he spoke through gritted teeth near her ear.

Your husband wants to hear your voice.

Song Shimu winced from the pain in her scalp, frowning as she stubbornly glared sideways at Wu Yongwan.

Mu Mu?

The familiar, deep concerned voice sounded. Hearing Lu Zhijin’s voice, Song Shimu’s heart instantly softened, her beautiful eyes welling with tears as she struggled to suppress her sobs.

Mu Mu? Are you there? Are you okay?

Lu Zhijin stared intently at the phone, his eyes filled with anxiety, his heart feeling as if steeped in boiling water.

A Jin, I’m fine, Song Shimu comforted him while holding back tears.

Hearing Song Shimu’s voice, Lu Zhijin finally felt like he could breathe again. He softened his tone to comfort her.

Mu Mu, don’t be afraid. I’ll bring you home tomorrow, just wait a little longer.

A Jin, don’t come. They won’t let you go…

The phone was taken away, tape placed over Song Shimu’s mouth again. Wu Yongwan held the phone, full of disdain.

Hey, Lu Zhijin, satisfied now? I’m only giving you one night. Tomorrow I’ll notify you of the exchange location.

Don’t try any tricks, or this time your wife won’t be returned to you in one piece!

Without waiting for the other party’s urgent response, Wu Yongwan directly powered off the phone. With a glance, he led his men away from the place.

Colonel, we’ve located the communication address.

Move out.Lu Zhijin spoke in a low voice, suppressing the turmoil in his heart as he directed personnel to make the next arrangements.

Lu Zhijin’s heart felt as if it were tightly gripped. Hearing Mu Mu’s voice just now and confirming she was safe had eased his mind considerably.

Wu Yongwan wouldn’t stay put obediently. When they arrived, he had indeed already left.

Tomorrow…
