Chapter 122: Threat

Lu Zhijin’s furrowed brows remained tightly knit as he simultaneously called Song Shimu’s potential contacts and pulled up surveillance footage from around Xingye Temple.

Alright, if Mu Mu contacts you, remember to call me.

Colonel!

Just as Lu Zhijin hung up, an investigator in police uniform came running over with an anxious expression, his face tense with urgency.

Any findings?

Lu Zhijin raised his hand to massage his temples. Several consecutive days of overtime had pushed his body beyond its limits, and Song Shimu’s disappearance had him completely overwhelmed.

We’ve found traces of your wife, the man hesitated before speaking cautiously, It’s Wu Yongwan.

!!!

Lu Zhijin’s eyes widened instantly, his narrow eyes filled with both fury and worry as the atmosphere around him plummeted.

He quickly strode to the monitoring station and watched as his subordinate pulled up the discovered surveillance footage.

In the parking lot of Xingye Temple, Lu Zhijin saw his Mu Mu walking back after praying for him when suddenly a van door swung open. A powerful arm grabbed Song Shimu and dragged her into the vehicle.

Sitting in the passenger seat of that van, wearing a black and gold patterned short-sleeved shirt with a smug expression, was none other than Wu Yongwan – the fugitive they had been trying to capture!

Lu Zhijin’s eyes turned frosty, radiating bloodthirsty menace. The veins on his hands bulged as they pressed against the table, his entire being emitting a terrifying aura.

Everyone held their breath, watching Lu Zhijin carefully while awaiting instructions, each person’s heart filled with apprehension.

They had been tracking Wu Yongwan for a week without any leads, and now right under their noses, he had managed to kidnap the colonel’s wife.

Track where this vehicle went, and send another team with me to investigate Xingye Temple.

Yes!

It was already late at night. When the monks at Xingye Temple heard the news, they quickly summoned Master Hongyuan and explained what had happened that afternoon.

Upon hearing that Song Shimu had met with misfortune, Master Hongyuan looked suddenly enlightened, sighed helplessly, and murmured Amitabha.

Your wife came here to pray for your safety. I never imagined something like this would happen.

Lu Zhijin’s heart ached with pain, his eyes unable to conceal his self-blame.

Colonel, we found this in the parking lot.

A young officer came running over, holding an evidence bag containing a shattered jade pendant and a dropped bracelet.

Master Hongyuan recognized them as the items he had given to Song Shimu. Seeing the broken jade pendant, he started in shock, his eyes filled with compassion.

Lu Zhijin stared blankly at the beaded bracelet – it represented his Mu Mu’s concern for him, her endless love.

Lu Zhijin’s heart felt as if it were soaking in cold water, suspended without anchor, empty and aching.

Reporting, Colonel. We haven’t found anything else in the parking lot so far.

Lu Zhijin’s face remained stern, his eyes dark and dangerous. His icy expression was truly frightening, his intimidating presence making people afraid to look directly at him.

What does the investigation department say?

The man cautiously watched Lu Zhijin’s expression, lacking confidence.

The vehicle had fake plates. After turning into a section without surveillance cameras, we lost track of it. We haven’t found the vehicle at any of the nearby exits.

On this hot summer night, the young officer felt as if he had stepped into Antarctica, shivering from the cold. The colonel’s face resembled a soul-reaping demon.

Lu Zhijin gritted his teeth, his eyes bloodshot, as he issued commands in a low voice.

Thoroughly check all vehicles appearing at every exit. They might have switched cars. Send more people to conduct direct searches, leave no corner unchecked!

Yes, sir!

Colonel!

Another officer came running over, holding a tablet with a deeply furrowed brow and an uneasy expression.

The command center sent over a video that requires your immediate attention.

Lu Zhijin took the tablet, and upon seeing the video’s content, his eyes widened abruptly.

The environment in the video appeared to be a warehouse.

Song Shimu was tied to a chair, her hands bound behind her back, a black cloth blindfolding her eyes, and her mouth sealed with tape. She seemed to be cautiously listening to her surroundings while struggling slightly.

Suddenly, a smug, laughing face appeared in the frame. Wu Yongwan’s ugly, terrifying face filled the entire screen as he held the phone toward the camera, baring his blackened, yellowish teeth.

Lu Zhijin, how does it feel? She’s fallen into my hands now, hasn’t she?

Aren’t you so capable? You wiped out my base, forced me to hide like a rat. Did you ever think this day would come?

Wu Yongwan stepped back with a chuckle, moving next to Song Shimu, his eyes filled with mockery as he suddenly grabbed her hair violently.

Song Shimu’s head was yanked backward, her pale neck arching into a dangerous curve. Trembling with fear, her breathing grew labored.

Lu Zhijin’s pupils dilated, his grip tightening on the tablet as if he could leap into the video and beat Wu Yongwan senseless. But for now, he could only watch helplessly as Song Shimu was tormented.

Wu Yongwan’s voice, as if emerging from hell, echoed with a nerve-grating, lewd laugh.

Your wife is in my hands now. You’d better repent for your crimes, or else—

His greedy eyes swept over Song Shimu’s body, his tone dripping with a chilling menace. He suddenly raised his gaze, staring directly into the camera as if locking eyes with Lu Zhijin.

You know how the Golden Triangle treats such a pretty little thing, don’t you?

Wu Yongwan sneered, released Song Shimu, and walked forward to pick up the recording phone. In the final seconds, his eyes brimmed with arrogance as he delivered his message in a light, taunting tone.

Wait for my contact. Let you properly savor the taste of waiting.

The video cut off abruptly, the screen turning black, reflecting Lu Zhijin’s terrifying expression—his eyes bloodshot, his fingers gripping the tablet so hard it seemed on the verge of shattering.

The young officer watched Lu Zhijin with concern, too afraid to speak, only staring anxiously.

Have we traced the video’s location?

Lu Zhijin took a deep breath, forcing himself to stay calm. He had to remain composed to rescue his Mu Mu.

He couldn’t let Mu Mu wait too long!

We’ve traced the IP address the video was sent from and have already dispatched a team to the location.

Let’s drive over there too.

Lu Zhijin’s voice was low and resolute, his dark pupils resembling an abyss that could swallow anyone caught off guard.

The video had been sent anonymously to the police. The traced location led to an abandoned building in the suburbs, surrounded by overgrown weeds and desolation.

The dilapidated four-story structure stood alone in the wilderness like a forsaken old man.

The police deployed a special forces unit. Everyone was fully armed, wearing bulletproof vests and carrying sniper rifles, advancing step by step toward the abandoned building.

They wanted Lu Zhijin, who was unarmed, to stay behind. Lu Zhijin loaded his pistol, a dangerous glint flashing in his eyes as he spoke in a steady tone.

My wife is in there. How could I possibly stay behind?
