Chapter 106: Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child

“Ke Ke, where’s Mommy? What is she doing?”

Lu Zhijin had worked overtime at the military base today. When he returned home, he found the living room empty. Normally, Song Shimu would be considerately waiting on the sofa for his return.

Colonel Lu, suddenly feeling neglected, wasn’t quite used to this.

Noticing light coming from Lu Chenxi’s room, Lu Zhijin assumed it was Song Shimu.

Instead, it was Lu Yike sitting on a small chair, seriously reading “You Look Nice Today” from a comic book to his younger sister with great solemnity.

When his father entered, Lu Yike sparingly lifted his eyelids to glance at him, his chubby little face bearing the solemn expression of a prematurely mature adult.

“Mommy’s in the study. She told us not to disturb her.”

“??”

Upon hearing this, Lu Zhijin slightly furrowed his brow. Was there another kindergarten activity?

Opening the study door, he found Song Shimu positioned strategically behind the desk, the computer screen’s light casting a glow on her face.

Her eyes reflected an eerie blue light, with her hair casually tied up at the back.

Song Shimu had one foot propped on the chair, her pink lips nibbling at her thumbnail as she shook her hands and feet anxiously.

Seeing Song Shimu in this state, Lu Zhijin’s handsome eyebrows knitted together in confusion.

Had the Education Bureau issued some new directive?

Why was his wife so distressed?

It seemed he’d have to invite Director Li for tea someday.

Lu Zhijin strode into the study with his long legs, concern in his eyes as he prepared to be a caring husband.

“Baby, what’s wrong?”

Song Shimu seemed not to hear him, her gaze fixed intently on the computer screen. Suddenly, her right hand gripping the mouse slammed down hard.

Wide-eyed, she stared intently at the still-loading screen before letting out a frustrated wail and throwing herself back into the chair with vengeance.

“Waaahhh—”

The loud, clear cry startled Lu Zhijin, who quickly hurried over to see what was troubling his wife.

“What’s wrong, what’s wrong, baby?”

Song Shimu pouted sadly, her eyes filled with grievance and even glistening with unshed tears at the corners. She wrapped her arms around Lu Zhijin’s waist in profound sorrow, her voice extremely pitiful.

“I didn’t manage to get tickets for SOT’s concert! I could just die crying, wu wu wu…”

“……”

What SOT?

Drunkards?

What on earth was this about?

But seeing how heartbroken his wife was, Lu Zhijin didn’t dare move or ask careless questions, afraid of touching on her sore spot.

Lu Yike came pattering over on his short little legs, his face full of alarm as he inquired.

“What happened? What’s going on? Did Mommy hit Daddy?”

“……”

“None of your business! Go back and put your sister to sleep!”

Lu Zhijin shot a disdainful look at Lu Yike, impatiently ordering him to scram.

Looking down, he gently stroked Song Shimu’s back to comfort her, his eyes shifting to infinite tenderness, his tone exceptionally patient.

“What exactly happened, baby?”

Song Shimu looked up with a melancholy expression, allowing the man to pick her up and sit back down on the chair with her in his arms.

She wrapped her arms around the man’s shoulders, leaning against Lu Zhijin’s chest, her tone as sorrowful as if she had watched someone else claim a 50-million-yuan prize right before her eyes.

“The SOT group is holding a concert in Haishi, but I didn’t manage to get tickets, wu wu wu. I won’t get to see my idols, wu wu wu wu…”

Song Shimu grew more aggrieved the longer she spoke. She had been looking forward to this for days, thinking she could finally meet her idols up close—who knew the tickets would be so hard to get!

Lu Zhijin frowned. He had no idea what this SOT group was, but since his wife liked them, he would simply take care of it.

“Don’t be upset, leave it to me.”

“It’s no use! The organizers announced in advance that today was the last ticket release, and they’ve all been snatched up!”

Song Shimu shook Lu Zhijin’s arm angrily, her pretty face scrunched up, eyes filled with the sorrow of dashed hopes.

“Your husband is no ordinary man.”

Lu Zhijin cupped her face with his large hand, a faint smile in his eyes and a mischievous smirk on his lips.

“If I help you get this sorted, how will you thank me?”

“If I get to see my idol, I’d even marry him!”

“……”

Lu Zhijin’s expression instantly darkened, his tender gaze turning icy. His eyes grew fierce, his tone cold.

“Forget it. You’re staying home.”

“Aiyo, husband, I’m sorry! I was just joking! You’re the one I love most—how could I run off with someone else!”

Song Shimu clung to him, coquettishly pouting her pink lips as she chased after Lu Zhijin for kisses, accidentally blurting out her true feelings!

Coaxed by Song Shimu’s sweet, pleading “husband, husband,” Lu Zhijin couldn’t stay angry. His expression softened, and he said with feigned reserve, “I’ll do my best.”

He immediately had Chen Sheng arrange the matter.

A glimmer of hope rising within her, Song Shimu attended to Lu Zhijin with extra diligence, afraid that if he became unhappy, her chance to see her idol would vanish.

In truth, Chen Sheng acted swiftly and resolved the issue right away.

But Lu Zhijin was enjoying the feeling of being pampered by his little wife too much, shamelessly basking in Song Shimu’s attentions day after day.

Lu Zhijin lounged on the sofa, accompanying Song Shimu as she watched her idol’s performance.

He truly couldn’t understand the appeal of a few scrawny men singing and dancing on stage.

But he didn’t dare ask, afraid his wife might flip him onto the floor.

Yet, watching Song Shimu in his arms, her eyes glued to the screen without sparing him a single glance, Young Master Lu felt a pang of jealousy.

“Wife, I want some grapes.”

“I’ll peel them for you, husband!”

Song Shimu immediately picked up the crystal bowl on the coffee table—the one Lu Yike had washed and filled with plump, glossy black Xinjiang grapes.

Her slender fingers deftly peeled away the purple skin, revealing the glistening, juicy flesh inside. She eagerly brought it to Lu Zhijin’s lips, a slight smile on her face, her eyes expectant as she watched him.

Lu Zhijin opened his mouth contentedly, deliberately letting his lips brush against her delicate fingertips. The cool, soft touch sent a tingling warmth through him, stirring tender affection.

“Disgusting!”

Lu Yike, sitting on a small stool by the coffee table, shot Lu Zhijin a resentful, disdainful glare and hugged the fruit plate protectively.

He had hand-washed every single one of those grapes!

When Lu Zhijin returned home from work, he still looked forward to enjoying his dear wife’s attentive service.

But as he entered the room, he found Song Shimu standing with her arms crossed, her fine eyebrows knitted, her gaze sharp and furious as she stared at Lu Zhijin.

“So, Lu Zhijin! How dare you deceive me! If I hadn’t lost my patience and asked Chen Sheng today, I wouldn’t have known you’ve been pretending all this time!”

Song Shimu’s tone carried a faint chill, feeling utterly exasperated inside. This man had deceived her for so many days, and she had foolishly waited on him all this time!

Lu Zhijin’s heart skipped a beat as he looked at Song Shimu’s angry profile, quickly admitting his mistake.

“Darling, I was wrong!”

“Hmph, one day without a beating, and you’re already tearing the roof tiles off!”

Lu Yike clung to Song Shimu’s leg, gazing at Lu Zhijin with a smug expression, his eyes gleaming with schadenfreude.

Song Shimu pouted in agreement, saying resentfully, “You’ll sleep alone tonight. I’m going to sleep with Ke Ke.”

Lu Zhijin’s heart tightened. He shot a glance at the gloating little rascal, his expression darkening. In a leisurely, seemingly unruffled tone, he casually remarked,

“Whether the tickets exist or not is entirely up to me.”

Song Shimu froze for a moment, then immediately clung to Lu Zhijin coquettishly, trying to win him over.

“Oh, honey, I’ve thought about it, and it’s still more comfortable sleeping with you.”

Lu Yike: Hmph! Fickle woman, cunning man!
