Chapter 75: Mama Can’t Always Be Mama
***
Leah’s words touched Eve deeply, as she had originally thought about letting Leah enjoy this hard-won peace.
But this girl had never thought that way. Despite being just a young girl, she was thinking about how to help Eve share the burdens of life.
Children her age were probably still nestled in their mama’s warm embrace.
It’s worth noting that Leah was basically the same age as Vivian, neither having celebrated their 12th birthday yet.
But their fates were completely different…
One had Eve’s care since childhood, where Eve treated her as if she would melt in her mouth and break in her hands.
The other only had Eve’s simple support in childhood, and because Eve devoted herself entirely to Vivian, she even somewhat neglected Leah.
Not only were their fates completely different, but their personalities were also worlds apart.
Vivian would trade Eve’s life for her own future.
While Leah could share Eve’s burdens, willing to do dangerous and difficult work protecting merchant routes.
“It’s alright, listen to me, darling. What do you call me?”
“Mama…”
Leah answered without hesitation. She cherished this title, though she always called it with some trepidation, afraid Eve would reject it.
But deep down, she believed this title carried great weight for her.
“That’s right, and since I’m mama, I have the obligation to protect you. Don’t rush to find work, you’re still so young.”
Eve gently pressed on Leah’s shoulders, her delicate face full of tenderness.
Her voice, clear as silver bells, entered Leah’s ears, so gentle it was like giving Leah’s ears a massage.
Leah, who had been somewhat excited, gradually calmed down under Eve’s soothing.
“Compared to the students who graduated with you, you’re 3 to 4 years younger than even the youngest.”
Leah was a genius, an undisputed genius among humans.
At a young age, she showed powerful magical aptitude, which was why Eve took notice of her.
She could easily pass the Church Academy’s tests at age 8, her talent was self-evident.
But even a genius was still underage, and it was too cruel for such a young child to worry about money.
If this continued, Eve as a mother wouldn’t be able to protect anything, where would she put her face?
“So there’s no rush to work, staying by mama’s side as a carefree little angel for a while is fine.”
“Mama has money, mama can support you. Whatever you want, mama can buy it for you.”
Eve wasn’t exaggerating. As a great witch, forget about things money could buy in human society.
Without exaggeration, if Leah wanted stars or the moon, Eve could pluck them down for her.
“I… I don’t want anything.”
Leah pursed her little mouth. She wasn’t a materialistic girl, or rather… she didn’t even know what materialism was.
Someone who considered a full meal a New Year’s celebration since childhood simply didn’t have such materialistic desires.
Or rather, her desires were few. Besides having some indescribable credibility towards Eve, her desires were quite low.
The reason she wanted to earn money was to buy something more important.
“I want to buy a small house, a small house that belongs just to us. It doesn’t need to be very big, doesn’t need to be as luxurious as now, but it must have you and me in it.”
“And… I’ve already found one.”
The reason Leah was so eager for money was that she wanted to buy a small standalone courtyard not far from the church.
It wasn’t large and was quite old, currently sitting vacant.
Although this small house wasn’t as luxurious as their current upscale apartment, it was the house Leah most wanted to own.
Because once… Eve and Vivian had lived in that house.
Eve might have forgotten herself, because Eve was always charitable, appearing gentle and considerate to everyone.
In the past, when Leah was terribly hungry, she would secretly wander near Eve’s former residence, waiting and hoping Eve would discover poor little her and invite her home for a full meal.
Even then, Leah had already started envying Vivian, envying that Vivian had such a gentle and beautiful mama.
Envying that she could taste Eve’s cooking every day, envying that her dresses were always clean and pretty, envying that she had Eve’s love and care…
But for some reason, Vivian always seemed unsatisfied.
But Leah was different. Every time Eve gently picked dishes for her, urging her to eat more, Leah’s constantly fearful heart would inexplicably find some stability.
So that small courtyard became the moonlight in Leah’s heart.
Even after seeing apartments in the capital’s golden district and the Imperial Royal palace, Leah still believed that small courtyard was the only utopia in her heart.
“Buy a house?”
Eve showed a somewhat surprised expression.
“No wonder our darling’s eyes light up at gold coins, you’ve been planning such a grand plan?”
Eve didn’t discourage Leah. She wasn’t like ordinary parents who, upon hearing their children’s flights of fancy, immediately crush them with their own experience of reality.
Like now, when a young child tells you she wants to buy a house in the capital by herself.
Anyone would find it hard to believe.
But Eve was different, her gentleness was ingrained in her bones. Faced with Leah’s grand ideas, her first response was praise.
“Tell me about it, which house do you want to buy? In the capital? Even a small courtyard in the Imperial capital costs quite a bit.”
Eve bent down and gently rubbed Leah’s head.
“A small courtyard is enough, I want to buy a house that belongs just to us two, I want to have a home that belongs just to us two.”
“Whether now… or in the future.”
Somehow, when saying the word “home,” Leah’s heart couldn’t help but flutter.
To Eve, this was just a child expressing filial thoughts to their mama.
But little did she know, what Leah was thinking about seemed to have transformed that filial piety somewhat…
After all, in Leah’s view, she would grow up eventually. And Eve was a witch, her appearance would never change.
She would eventually catch up to her footsteps, and at that time…
Just like that dream last night that made her underwear feel strange, mama can’t always be mama, right?
“Alright, I support you. However… finding work is fine, but I can’t accept anything too dangerous. After all, you don’t want mama to worry about you all the time, right?”
“Later I’ll go to the Royal Palace to ask around for you. With your abilities, getting a position in the Imperial Palace would be easy as pie.”
