Chapter 69: A Sudden Awakening
***
When Eve called out to stop her, Vivian instinctively thought Eve had changed her mind.
Her previously gloomy face showed a hint of a smile.
Although excited inside, she still tried to suppress her emotions, wanting to appear more natural.
As Eve slowly walked up to her, and the comforting fragrance from Eve’s body grew closer, Vivian’s heart instantly jumped to her throat.
She carefully looked at Eve’s fair and soft hands, thinking how wonderful it would be if those beautiful jade-like hands could pat her head.
In the past, Vivian used to resist her mother patting her head the most, but now… she dreams of her mother gently stroking her hair to comfort her.
“Is… is there anything else?”
Vivian asked softly.
But Eve didn’t answer, only bent down to help Vivian fix her slightly disheveled dress hem.
She smoothed out the creases of that beautiful white feathered dress belonging exclusively to the Holy Maiden.
“Nothing, your dress was a bit messy, so I helped you fix it. As the Holy Maiden, you should pay more attention to your appearance on such occasions.”
Eve was very attentive to detail, noticing even such minor things.
Vivian also silently scolded herself for being careless, knowing that normally this sacred white feathered dress shouldn’t have even a single wrinkle, let alone at such an important occasion with the princess present.
“Even if you’re living alone, you need to keep your spirits up.”
Eve finished fixing Vivian’s dress and stood up straight, looking at the girl who was staring intently at her.
Seeing the light in her eyes dim from bright to dark following Eve’s cold expression, Eve felt a slight stirring in her heart.
“Then farewell until we meet again, Holy Maiden.”
Eve reached out and patted Vivian’s head, then walked past her, heading towards where Leah and Qianzhi were.
Only Vivian remained standing there dazed, her mind filled with scenes of Eve showing concern for her just moments ago.
Two years, it had been two years… Although this bit of care seemed insignificant, that familiar feeling… that meticulous, bone-deep gentleness, Vivian couldn’t find any substitute for it anywhere in the world.
“In the end, am I still alone?”
Vivian lowered her head dejectedly, not daring to look at Eve’s retreating figure because she was afraid she would break down emotionally and burst into tears.
Because Eve was so similar to her deceased mother whom she kept thinking about, aside from their different appearances, they were practically the same person.
Even the pleasant scent they carried was identical.
“Hahaha…”
While Vivian was privately grieving, she suddenly heard melodious laughter like silver bells coming from nearby.
She instinctively raised her head to look at the source of the laughter.
She saw Leah intimately leaning against Eve’s embrace, countless people surrounding her like stars around the moon, and even Lorraine’s young lady was holding her hand affectionately.
Eve must have said something that made Leah laugh so happily.
Once upon a time, wasn’t she the one whom Leah used to look at enviously from afar?
But now… Vivian felt she wasn’t even worth as much as a rat in a dark sewer. After all, even rats have family to care for them and nurture them with familial love.
Vivian wanted to say she wasn’t jealous at all, but her inexplicably reddening eyes betrayed her true feelings completely.
At the same time, the princess’s speech had also ended. A thunderous applause erupted around them, and in this noisy environment, Vivian felt everything starting to become surreal.
Everyone’s faces were blurry, except for Eve…
“Mama? I miss you so much, I was wrong, I was really wrong… I’m sorry, mama…”
Only now did the girl, whose eyes had been blinded by self-interest, suddenly realize how precious what she once had was.
Only now did she understand what her mother’s heartfelt concern before leaving had contained…
But all of this, everything, was her own choice, and there was no way to take it back.
All that remained was the melancholy of what she had once thought ordinary.
“Holy Maiden! Holy Maiden…”
“Huh?”
The dazed Vivian was suddenly pulled back to reality by urgent calls.
“It’s time for you to go on stage, have you forgotten you need to speak on behalf of the Church? You also need to introduce the grand entrance of this year’s outstanding graduate representative.”
“Oh right, different from the previous rehearsal, the outstanding graduate representative has been changed, her name is Leah, not the young lady from the Lorraine family anymore.”
“Don’t get it wrong.”
Hearing the urgency from those around her, Vivian felt a moment of confusion.
“What? Leah… became the outstanding graduate representative?”
