Chapter 68: I’m Sorry
***
“Is there something wrong?”
Eve turned around with a calm expression, immediately seeing Vivian who had spoken to her.
This familiar voice was like a thunderclap in Eve’s mind, causing her body to involuntarily tremble.
After all, she was the precious daughter of the original Eve, the girl she had been thinking about even before her execution.
Hearing her voice, even though the current Eve instinctively felt impatient, her body’s reaction couldn’t be resisted.
Fortunately, it wasn’t too obvious.
Eve’s gaze toward her carried a sense of distance, and although Eve maintained a smile, it was clearly visible that it was a polite smile one would give to a daughter’s classmate.
Fundamentally, it carried a great deal of detachment.
Vivian had spent two years in the Holy Church, and without her mother’s protection, she had learned early on to read people’s expressions and intentions, otherwise she wouldn’t have made it to where she is today.
Seeing Eve’s expression, her heart felt like it was being pricked by a needle.
Vivian carefully yet greedily inhaled the fragrant scent around Eve, a scent that was too familiar to her.
Even though she hadn’t smelled it for two years, when this scent entered her nostrils, it still made Vivian’s heart quiver.
This made her wonder, when was the last time her mother hugged her?
It seemed… it had been more than two years.
Thinking about this, Vivian couldn’t help but laugh self-mockingly in her heart. Her mother’s embrace was always open to her, but she was the one who chose to distance herself.
Even though it was all her own choice, now she was secretly feeling heartbroken. How pathetic and laughable…
But the scent on Leah’s mother was really so pleasant, exactly the same as her mother’s scent when she was alive.
The way she was gentle with Leah also seemed like…
“Um…”
Realizing that not speaking up would seem inappropriate, Vivian finally spoke hesitantly.
“I’m sorry, I was foolish before and did many wrong things. I bullied your daughter, I’m truly sorry…”
Vivian lowered her head, her voice as faint as a mosquito, completely lacking the authority that the Holy Maiden should have.
“You came to apologize?”
Eve looked at Vivian with her head bowed, her expression showing no particular change.
“Yes, I’m really sorry. I know what’s done is done, and my apology might seem hollow, but… I still wanted to express my regret.”
Vivian carefully raised her head, noticing that Eve’s gaze still carried some coldness, she lowered it again in disappointment.
“If you want to apologize, you should go directly to Leah. Whether to forgive you or not is her decision.”
“I’m Leah’s mother, I’m only responsible for protecting her. As for forgiving others on her behalf… I don’t have that right.”
Eve’s words made Vivian’s body tremble. Since becoming the Holy Maiden, haven’t others made plenty of decisions for her?
Sometimes she couldn’t even decide her own daily necessities.
Everything she did was controlled by the church, she had no freedom at all, just like a mascot.
This wasn’t just control, it was more about disrespecting Vivian.
But the Eve before her was different, she showed complete respect for her daughter, even though she was still a child…
She would allow her daughter to make decisions freely, while she quietly stood behind, protecting her regardless of the consequences.
This was respect, this was love, this was what family meant.
Vivian’s envious expression was obvious. Once upon a time, she too was a happy child who had all of this, but now…
Everything was gone, everything was gone…
Even this woman who looked so much like her mother looked at her with such cold distance in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, I was presumptuous. I will find an opportunity to apologize to Leah…”
“However, wrong is wrong, and if you don’t mind, I would like to invite you and Leah to dinner together.”
“Of course, if you refuse that’s fine too, just pretend I never mentioned it, I’m really sorry for bothering you.”
Vivian took out a business card and handed it to Eve, bowed deeply to her, and turned to leave.
“Wait.”
But after Vivian had taken two steps away, Eve called out to stop her.
