Chapter 60: Hah, A Clown

***

Accompanied by crisp hoofbeats, the Princess’s luxurious carriage stopped precisely in front of Vivian.

At this moment, Vivian was overwhelmed with grief, busy crying.

With tears streaming down her face, her eyes had long been blurred by tears, and being too absorbed in crying, she didn’t notice the elegant carriage that had stopped before her.

“Oh my, isn’t this the Holy Maiden? Why are you crying like this? Have you encountered something troubling?”

It wasn’t until Princess Alice’s gentle voice rang out that Vivian realized something was amiss.

She hurriedly wiped the tears from her face with the back of her hand, but how could she stop crying now?

No matter how much she wiped, she couldn’t clean them away, it only made her look more disheveled.

The tears had smeared her makeup, even smudging her lipstick from the corner of her mouth, that lipstick dragged from the corner of her mouth all the way to the side of her face looked especially like a clown’s exaggerated makeup meant to entertain audiences.

“How unsightly indeed. In such a public place, how could you, as the Holy Maiden of the Church, lose your composure like this?”

Alice spoke while cordially offering a handkerchief, but before Vivian could reach for it, she dropped it on the ground.

“I’m sorry, I couldn’t hold it. I don’t have any extra handkerchiefs, you’ll have to make do with this one.”

Alice looked down at Vivian before her with a cold smile.

At this moment, the elegantly dressed and eye-catching Alice formed a stark contrast with Vivian, who stood disheveled with clown-like makeup before her.

Alice had long wanted to see Vivian in such a miserable state.

“I…”

Vivian looked at the handkerchief on the ground; although it was now covered in dust, it was still given by the Princess.

If you don’t accept it, that would be disrespecting the Princess, and taken more seriously, it would be looking down on a member of the Royal Family, an offense punishable by death would not be excessive.

Vivian didn’t want to give anyone leverage against her; since becoming the Holy Maiden, she had been extremely cautious these past 2 years.

This was also why Alice, who had punished everyone who had caused Eve to be sentenced to hanging, had never been able to punish the main culprit, Vivian.

This person seemed to have some expert guidance behind her, and even as the Holy Maiden, everything she did could be described as watertight.

Sometimes Alice wondered if Vivian was so calculating because she had been raised by Eve in the past.

Vivian bent down to pick up the handkerchief, carefully holding the dust-covered handkerchief in her hands, and still had to bow to thank Alice before her.

“Don’t mention it. It’s just that I’ve noticed the Holy Maiden’s condition hasn’t been very good lately. The Church has also reported this matter to my father, the Emperor…”

“I didn’t quite believe it at first. I always thought you, Holy Maiden, were someone who could separate life from work, and handle both imperial and church affairs meticulously.”

“But today, it seems… that’s not the case.”

Alice pressed her lips together, looking down at Vivian before her, who now seemed to be facing a great enemy.

Her eyelids trembled violently, as if foreseeing some terrible danger.

“You need some time to adjust. Church affairs… you can’t handle them in this state. I think you should rest for a few days. Tomorrow I’ll find someone to temporarily take over your duties as Holy Maiden for a while.”

“You’re too tired, it looks like you really need a good rest.”

Before Alice could finish speaking, Vivian had already widened her eyes, standing frozen in place holding the dust-covered handkerchief.

She didn’t know what she had done wrong, suddenly being stripped of her position as Holy Maiden.

At this moment, her mind was blank, the successive blows leaving her unable to recover.

Even when Alice was speaking, she didn’t know how to counter.

“Well then, I have matters to attend to. Holy Maiden, you should go home and rest well today… You must be quite lonely by yourself? Seeing such a lively scene, doesn’t it make you feel uncomfortable?”

“Oh right, I remember you denounced your foster mother to show your loyalty to the Church, and that’s how you got to where you are today, right?”

“Not bad, showing such understanding of the bigger picture at such a young age, truly admirable spirit.”

“But… at what cost?”

After leaving these words, Alice walked past her coldly, heading toward the school building.

The surroundings were bustling with activity, but Alice’s final words had stripped Vivian’s entire world of sound and color.

From beginning to end, she hadn’t said a single word, seeming to silently accept Alice’s interrogation.

Alice also knew that it wasn’t so easy to replace a Holy Maiden appointed by the Church, but since she had created this opening, even if it was just taking away Vivian’s authority for a few days, it was still a good start.

After all, Alice’s more cruel methods were yet to come.

“Hah, clown.”

Alice laughed coldly, that smile seemingly containing all the mockery in her emotions.

But when she saw Eve’s figure in the ceremonial hall, her expression suddenly became bright again.

“It’s wifey!”

Alice’s lips couldn’t help but curve upward…
