Chapter 44: I Wrote It All

***

This lunch was quite enjoyable, with Eve constantly trying to liven up the atmosphere and comforting the troubled Leah.

Umi, meanwhile, was curiously observing these two people without saying a word throughout.

Actually, she had wanted to slip away quietly, but Eve’s cooking smelled too delicious. She thought since she was already here, she might as well taste a little before leaving, but once she started tasting, she couldn’t leave at all.

Originally planning to sneak away quietly, she now found herself thinking about how to keep her head down and eat more.

The reason Umi was reluctant to stay here was because she recognized Qianzhi, that young lady from the Lorraine family who had extensive connections in the Imperial capital.

Just standing next to such a young lady felt overwhelmingly intimidating, let alone having lunch with her.

Fortunately, everyone’s attention was on Eve, and no one noticed Umi who was keeping her head down while eating.

But as an observer, Umi also noticed there seemed to be a subtle atmosphere in this home.

When Eve was busy cooking, Qianzhi went next door for a while, and when she came back, she had changed into a pair of thin white silk stockings with a pink tinge.

Under the dining table, Umi could feel Qianzhi intentionally or unintentionally using her beautifully curved ankles wrapped in white silk stockings to constantly brush against Eve’s legs, which were similarly wrapped in black stockings.

Leah was hugging Eve’s waist, appearing to be crying grievances on the surface, but she had actually secretly taken several deep breaths of Eve’s scent.

And through all this, Eve seemed unaware, even continuously praising how cute they were.

This subtle pink-tinged feeling probably couldn’t be described as just cute, could it?

“This family is definitely not normal.”

Umi swallowed, thinking only about finishing her meal quickly and slipping away.

However, fortunately, the scene of feminine intimacy that Umi had imagined didn’t materialize, and she was able to slip away as she wished.

Though it was Eve who personally sent her home, saying she had some errands to run outside, so she would escort Umi back along the way.

Before leaving, Eve wrote her a list.

“What’s this?”

Umi looked at the list in her hand with confusion.

It contained several books that seemed to be related to magic, the kind sold at the bookstore on the corner.

“These are some entry-level magic books I recommend for you to read. The knowledge inside might help you. You don’t need to find any intermediary, you can get into the Church Academy on your own merit.”

“I believe in you. You’re not a stupid child, you just haven’t found the right method yet.”

The list Eve gave Umi was very detailed, noting which pages were worth reading and which pages to skip to avoid wasting time.

If it were just a list of recommended magic books, perhaps Umi wouldn’t have paid much attention, considering it just Eve’s perfunctory response to her mother’s request.

But these specially annotated notes genuinely caught Umi’s attention.

When self-studying magic, the most difficult part is organizing all that complex information. How could a beginner have the ability to organize all this?

The golden age for learning magic only lasts a few years, and once missed, it’s truly missed.

If too much time is wasted on organizing knowledge points, it could really kill a genius’s potential.

This is why teachers are so important, after all, magic books flood the market like cattle, and most of them are waste paper.

Only the works left behind by that red-haired witch who was once sentenced to hanging could be considered nutritious material.

Although humans hate witches, that witch’s magic books were of such high quality that human-authored magic books simply couldn’t compare, one could say there was practically no competition.

Even the Church Academy’s teaching syllabus was basically compiled according to the works left behind by that red-haired witch.

However, in Umi’s list, there wasn’t a single work by that witch.

“Why… aren’t you recommending any magic books written by that red-haired witch to me? Aren’t those the best magic books?”

“Wrong, the best isn’t necessarily the most suitable. For someone in your situation, the ones I recommended will be fine. Don’t worry, the exams and such are very simple.”

Eve smiled and patted Umi’s head. Since all the books were written by Eve herself, she naturally knew what was suitable for Umi.

“You read first, and if there’s anything you don’t understand, come ask me. I have something to attend to, so I’ll take my leave now. Goodbye, little Umi.”

Eve was in a hurry to find the Princess at the Royal Palace, so she quickly bid farewell to Umi and left.

Leaving Umi with a bewildered expression as she watched her hurried silhouette gradually disappear.

“Really? This is the first person I’ve met who doesn’t recommend books written by that great witch.”
