Chapter 38: Fabric
***
The time was approaching midnight, and since both children still had to go to the academy tomorrow, they couldn’t stay up late.
After finally sending off the reluctant Qianzhi and putting to bed Leah, who was filled with both anxiety and anticipation, Eve finally had time to sit down and properly study the formal dress she was preparing for Leah.
Although formal dresses, with their exposed shoulders, arms, and legs, might seem to use little fabric, they weren’t actually that easy to make.
Every stitch required precise attention, and just hiding the seams to make the entire dress look dignified and elegant was a challenging task.
However, since Eve had maxed out her domestic skills, and could rely on a bit of magic if needed, as long as all the materials were prepared, it wasn’t too difficult overall.
After studying Leah’s measurements for half a day and making a simple sketch to determine the needed materials, Eve went to her room to sleep.
Early the next morning, after preparing breakfast for both children, Eve was ready to go out to purchase materials.
She ran into Qianzhi, who was standing at her doorstep. Today, Qianzhi was wearing a proper academy uniform with a light pleated skirt and white over-knee socks underneath, looking very cute and full of youthful energy.
“Are you heading out so early?”
Qianzhi watched Eve hurrying out, her tone carrying a hint of disappointment.
Truth be told, every time she came to Eve’s house for meals, the delicious food was one reason, but wanting to see Eve’s stunning beauty was another reason.
However, the latter was something Qianzhi never dared to say out loud.
“Yes, I need to go shopping early to get all the fabric. Breakfast is ready, go eat quickly.”
“Oh, and Qianzhi looks very nice today too.”
Eve waved at Qianzhi and hurried out the door.
Left standing there, Qianzhi couldn’t help but reveal a lovely smile. She pursed her lips and didn’t rush to eat breakfast, instead returning to her room to change out of the thin, translucent white silk socks.
She hadn’t planned to wear them to the academy; she had dressed that way specifically for Eve to see, just to receive her compliments.
…
Although it was morning, the nearby commercial street was already very lively.
People were coming and going, all sorts of people could be seen, as expected of the empire’s capital’s most prosperous area.
Looking at the crowded streets before her, Eve momentarily lost her sense of direction. To be honest, she really didn’t know where would be suitable to buy fabric.
After all, on this street, tailor shops were as numerous as cattle hair, from ones that looked extremely luxurious to inconspicuous ones tucked away in narrow corners. For fabric and some special tools, these tailor shops were the first choice.
Of course, she could also go to specialized fabric stores, but these places generally didn’t do business with individuals.
Eve only had 10 silver coins, so she needed to budget carefully.
However, Eve’s soft and weak appearance, looking like a depressed white-haired madam who seemed as harmless as a cotton ball, clearly showed she wasn’t a local.
It would be difficult not to get swindled by unscrupulous merchants.
Just as Eve was troubled, she passed by the shop where she had bought beef yesterday.
The shop owner lady was arranging the sign outside, and her eyes lit up when she saw Eve.
“Sister, you’re here again? Oh my, still so beautiful, seems even more beautiful than yesterday.”
“What would you like today? Because you’re so beautiful, big sister will give you a discount.”
The shop owner lady enthusiastically came over to greet Eve, her fluffy apron unable to hide her attractive figure. She seemed to be not much older than Eve, her face smiling with a beautiful beauty mark at the corner of her eye.
With a bit of makeup, she would be quite eye-catching, though her personality was a bit too straightforward, making Eve momentarily uncomfortable.
“No… I’m not buying meat today.”
“Ah? What’s this, sure enough, in little sister’s heart, I’m just a passerby. That deep affection and true heart, just like yesterday’s premium beef brisket, so cheaply regarded.”
“…”
Eve looked at the shop owner lady who suddenly started performing melodrama, momentarily at a loss for words.
“I want to buy some fabric to make clothes, I don’t know…”
“Oh, then you’ve asked the right person, this matter runs deep. Which shops on this street have good fabric, big sister knows crystal clear, but…”
The shop owner lady changed her expression incredibly quickly, looking Eve up and down, her manner suggesting that without some benefit, it would be difficult to help.
“Please, big sister…”
Eve slightly bowed her head, looking weak and pitiful, and that soft “big sister” immediately made the shop owner lady’s eyes grow dreamy.
She really is beautiful!
“Alright, alright, just for that ‘big sister,’ I’ll point you in the right direction. See that biggest shop up ahead? That’s owned by the empire’s wealthiest family, they have the best fabric quality and craftsmanship there, though the prices are a bit high.”
“I don’t recommend the others, they’re too shady. For someone like you, they’d fleece you three times over.”
