Chapter 35: Why Doesn’t She Look at Me
***
“So what? In my heart, you’re already amazing.”
Eve gently patted little Leah’s head as she looked at her guilty expression, and Eve couldn’t help but feel heartbroken.
Look how much pressure this child is under, thinking that anything less than the best is failure, who instilled such ideas in her?
In Eve’s view, as long as Leah grows up healthy and happy, kind and brave with proper values, that’s already quite successful.
Unlike certain people who haven’t even learned to be human yet but already act like beasts.
“But you promised that if I became the outstanding graduate representative and gave a speech, you would come to my graduation ceremony.”
Leah lowered her head dejectedly. She didn’t care about being the outstanding graduate representative, nor about giving a speech, or even the graduation ceremony itself.
All she wanted was for Eve to spend more time with her.
“Yes, but even if you hadn’t achieved anything, mama would still attend your graduation ceremony.”
“Because this is one of the most important moments in your life, how could it happen without mama being there?”
Eve’s words made Leah lift her small face involuntarily, looking at Eve with teary eyes. Though she didn’t speak, her expression seemed to be seeking confirmation that Eve’s words were true.
“Don’t overthink things. Rather than worrying about all this, why not think about how you’re going to dress up beautifully for the graduation ceremony the day after tomorrow?”
“I want everyone to see that Eve’s daughter is an outstanding graduate of the Church Academy!”
When Eve said these words, her tone was filled with immense pride.
It was this tone that instantly gave Leah unlimited courage. Who says only those who gave birth to you are real mothers?
Eve right here is a real mother!
Leah felt as if she had been reborn through Eve.
“Mama… waa, I love mama.”
Leah, like a little crybaby, threw herself into Eve’s embrace. For some reason, when she said the word “love,” her heart began to beat faster inexplicably.
“I love you too. Alright, stop crying. You can cry in front of mama, but when you’re outside, you must be strong no matter what, understand?”
“Yes!”
Leah nodded vigorously, and with her worries resolved, her mood improved considerably.
She then began helping Eve clean the house. Although this wasn’t their house, it held deep meaning for Leah.
At the same time, she secretly made a resolution in her heart that if she had the chance, she would definitely work hard to earn money and buy a house of their own. Though it might not be as luxurious or spacious as this one, it would be a house where she and mama could shelter from wind and rain, a spiritual harbor and support.
Before they knew it, the sky had gradually darkened, and Qianzhi punctually knocked on the door at the moment darkness fell.
Eve hurried to open the door and saw Qianzhi standing there with a small gift box, graceful and elegant.
Her expression carried a trace of girlish shyness, and the sunset glow illuminated her beautiful face. Eve felt as if she had inadvertently stepped into a painting.
“Good evening, sorry to disturb again.”
“Zhizhi, you look so beautiful.”
Eve quickly welcomed the well-dressed Qianzhi into the room.
At this moment, Qianzhi was wearing a beautiful one-piece dress, her whole person radiating youthful girlish charm.
Just like that pure and clean high school girl you never dared or were willing to look at directly, her clean face needed no makeup to show perfect beauty, every movement capable of touching one’s heart.
“Did you go somewhere for business?”
“Mm…”
Qianzhi nodded, handing the gift box to Eve.
“Yes… went out for something.”
Qianzhi lied, her nose tip slightly reddening. She hadn’t gone out for business, dressing up so beautifully was intentional.
It was just for Eve to see.
Actually, she had originally wanted to wear cute white stockings for Eve to see, but then thought if she’s wearing white stockings, shouldn’t she also wear high-heeled leather shoes?
And if she’s wearing leather shoes, wouldn’t it seem too deliberate without choosing an appropriate dress?
So Qianzhi started dressing up after returning home, and didn’t finalize her outfit until it was almost dark.
Then, as the sky was beginning to darken but hadn’t completely darkened, she began anxiously waiting outside Eve’s door. She probably stood there for about 15 minutes before gently knocking when it was completely dark.
The maiden’s reserved and introverted thoughts were perfectly embodied in Qianzhi.
“Come in quickly, dinner will be ready soon.”
Eve watched as Qianzhi withdrew her delicate feet wrapped in white stockings from her leather shoes, slowly sliding them into the slippers Eve had bent down to offer.
The little feet wrapped in white stockings even inadvertently brushed against Eve’s hand…
The young girl’s movements were somewhat slow, like a deliberate display with a hint of calculation.
But Eve didn’t say anything, just took the things to the kitchen, which made Qianzhi slightly dissatisfied.
She looked at the white stockings on her feet, thinking doesn’t this look good? She doesn’t like it…
Why doesn’t she compliment me? She clearly looked at me several times…
It must not be enough! Hmm… I should increase the intensity. Maybe find an excuse to put my feet in her embrace.
Hmm… but what excuse should I use?
