Chapter 31: Crying? What’s the Use of Crying?
***
While Eve’s side was filled with laughter and peaceful moments, emphasizing that the three of them living well together was more important than anything else.
On the other side, after today’s experience in the stairwell, the ungrateful Vivian returned to the large house prepared for her by the Church.
It was a three-story detached villa with a yard, covering a considerable area. Though not in a prime location, it was still quite valuable.
Unfortunately, only the ungrateful Vivian lived there alone. Occasionally, some people who claimed to be Vivian’s friends would visit, but Vivian couldn’t muster any interest in them.
Precisely because the living space was too large, it further emphasized Vivian’s loneliness.
Once upon a time, she remembered living happily with Eve in that not-so-spacious yard.
Although life wasn’t as luxurious as now, when she was hungry, there would be hot meals personally prepared by Eve, and Eve would help her wash and organize her dresses and clothes.
When upset, she could throw herself into Eve’s arms and act spoiled, and even when facing difficulties, she didn’t need to worry — she just needed to hide in Eve’s embrace.
Eve would solve everything for her.
But…
Vivian didn’t know when she started taking all these things for granted. She naturally demanded things from Eve, and eventually, for the sake of her so-called future, she personally sent Eve to the gallows.
It wasn’t until Eve spoke those moving words at the tribunal that she truly awakened.
What use was being the Holy Maiden of the Church, what use were fame and status?
Even several times the value of these things combined couldn’t buy a person who truly loves and cares for you.
Before, Vivian was ignorant and found daily life with Eve tedious and boring. She yearned for upper-class life, aspiring to a higher standard of living.
She hated watching the stars from the narrow yard and disliked the ordinary three meals Eve made for her each day.
She yearned for the luxurious carriages that the noble children at the Church Academy rode in, longed for the exquisite sandwiches in their hands, and envied the servant-like entourage that surrounded them like stars around the moon.
But after leaving Eve, Vivian truly understood that watching stars from this spacious yard was no different from anywhere else. In fact, here she was missing that person who would worry about her getting cold and thoughtfully drape a coat over her shoulders.
Those exquisite sandwiches, when eaten, weren’t actually that wonderful, not even comparing to a fraction of the meals Eve used to make.
The servants surrounding her like stars around the moon only made Vivian feel irritated because this was their job — they weren’t genuinely surrounding Vivian because they wanted her well-being.
It was only because Vivian had benefits worth obtaining.
The more she felt the coldness of this world, the more Vivian realized Eve’s goodness.
She was so gentle that even after Vivian had done such terrible things to her, her last thoughts before death were still of Vivian, wanting to witness her grow up and become a young lady.
Vivian had traded Eve for everything she yearned for, but after truly obtaining it all, she suddenly realized that everything she had yearned for, she had already possessed long ago.
But she had ignorantly thrown it all away…
Slap!
At this thought, Vivian forcefully slapped her own face, leaving a clear handprint on her delicate cheek.
Vivian couldn’t understand — compared to Eve, who was the real witch?
Could a girl who would send her foster mother to the gallows for the sake of her own reputation truly deserve the title of Holy Maiden?
“Mama… I’m sorry, I miss you so much, I’m really sorry.”
Vivian was in tears, she couldn’t remember how many times she had cried out to the stars like this.
But what’s the use of crying?
