Chapter 27: Pride Before Courtesy
***
Her previously impatient expression suddenly became clear and lucid.
She stood up hurriedly, almost knocking over the tea beside her.
Disregarding her awkwardness, she quickly nodded and bowed, accepting the business card Eve handed over with a smiling expression.
This business card was specially customized for Eve by Princess Alice, saying it could help resolve Eve’s troubles when needed.
Eve initially thought it was some kind of magical tool, but couldn’t help laughing when she received it.
Because Alice had engraved the Medal of Honor she awarded to Eve along with its serial number on the business card. Although it was just something for Eve to introduce herself with, due to its special nature of being issued by the Imperial Royal Family, its effectiveness was self-evident.
Even as a principal of the Church Academy, no matter how high and mighty their position, they couldn’t act tyrannically in front of someone recognized by the empire’s three powers.
“Oh my, I’ve been so discourteous.”
“Miss Eve, is it?”
The principal looked at this name, frowning silently for a moment.
Faced with this sudden silence, Eve instinctively tensed up, wondering if she had noticed something?
After all, she had only changed her surname, not her given name…
“What a beautiful name, how could there be such a wonderfully flowing name in this world?”
The principal’s few seconds of hesitation were actually spent wracking her brains for phrases to flatter Eve.
As it turned out, she didn’t seem very skilled at this, since usually others were the ones flattering her.
“I don’t even know how to describe it. Look at me rambling… Please, sit down, I’ll brew tea for you personally.”
The principal showed a smiling face, displaying a warmth and thoughtfulness that Eve had never seen before. It’s worth noting that when Eve was still a Cardinal Deacon of the church two years ago, the principal’s interactions with her were nothing like this.
Because of their nearly equal status within the church system, their usual dealings were merely polite and nothing more.
There was absolutely no possibility of such a subservient situation as now occurring.
“Here, have some tea, this is premium tea leaves. Leah, you should have a cup too. You don’t know how worried we’ve been these past few days when we couldn’t find you.”
The principal brought over a stool and sat next to the two of them. She didn’t choose to return to her high-and-mighty chair behind her desk, but instead chose a cramped little stool that could barely accommodate her slightly plump figure.
“I’m truly sorry, because Leah and I were separated for various reasons since she was very young, and it’s only now that I’ve finally found her…”
Eve began telling the story she had rehearsed hundreds of times in her mind, considering many details to ensure its authenticity.
However, it was quite obvious that the principal wasn’t interested in Eve’s story, only shedding touched tears when hearing the part about Eve having an honorary medal bestowed by the Princess.
“Such a moving story, who would have thought, Leah, the academy has always had limited understanding of your situation.”
“Ah, why didn’t you come directly to me, your principal, for help when you had problems?”
“The academy’s policies have always been very open-minded towards students in difficult situations like yourself. Take the student loan program for example…”
The principal wanted to say something good about the Church Academy, but after thinking about it, the only slightly humane policy was just the student loan program.
And this single positive policy was left behind by the previous Cardinal Deacon, that executed crimson witch.
It had nothing to do with her as the principal, or even with the church behind her…
The policy was set by the witch, and the money came from the Imperial Royal Family.
The only involvement the church might have had was secretly skimming off some interest…
“Madam Principal, let’s get back to the main topic. About my daughter not being allowed to graduate…”
“Impossible! There must be some misunderstanding here. Leah is clever and excellent in her studies, how could she not be allowed to graduate?”
“But… you haven’t even asked about her grades yet?”
Eve’s words made the principal slightly embarrassed. She wiped the cold sweat from her forehead, forget about grades, she hadn’t even asked which year Leah was graduating from.
“There must be some misunderstanding here. I’ll send someone… no, I’ll personally investigate this matter.”
