Lord Ghost Husband, Please Let Me Go - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Ghost Marriage
My name is Yin Su. I was born with Spirit Sight that allows me to see ghosts. Over the years, instead of getting used to being frightened by spirits, my courage has completely shattered I often wish I could poke my eyes out at any moment.
But my stepmother, who has no conscience, arranged a Ghost Marriage for me. For a dowry of five million, she tied me up and stuffed me into a car headed to the Wei Family, the wealthiest household in Hancheng.
A Ghost Marriage means finding a living wife for a deceased person. On one hand, it fulfills the dead person’s unfulfilled wishes; on the other, it gives the living a sense of connection. It might seem like a fair deal, but of all people, why did it have to be me dragged into this?
My money-grubbing stepmother couldn’t care less whether I was marrying a human or a ghost.
I’ve been at the Wei Family for three days, and today is the wedding day.
Early in the morning, I was awakened to see crowds of people bustling in and out. They were more excited and more anxious than I was about the wedding going smoothly.
Even though the wedding wasn’t scheduled until Haishi was still a good ten hours away.
Haishi is around 11 p.m., and only when marrying a ghost would anyone consider that an auspicious time.
What’s more, today is the Ghost Festival!
The Wei Family is wealthy and lives in a villa. The place where the body lies in repose is on the ground floor. As soon as I entered, I saw wreaths lined up from outside all the way into the hall, densely packed and stretching several meters long.
The housekeeper urged me to hurry inside to change clothes and put on makeup, and he asked a hunchbacked, thin, short woman to explain the rules of the Ghost Marriage to me. Hunched over, she looked to be in her forties or fifties at most, but her face was covered in age spots. When she spoke, her mouth opened and closed, her words slurred and unclear.
It was like a child babbling.
She grabbed me with her withered, branch-like hands and muttered, “Miss Susu, come with me. This old woman will teach you the rules. Once you set foot in the Wei Family, you must abide by them.”
Then, she pushed me into a small, square room and told the four young girls to wait inside to take good care of me.
But… how were they going to take care of me?
They pressed me into a chair. Their so-called care was just changing my clothes, applying makeup, and tidying my appearance. Whether it was because of the Ghost Marriage or something else, they first made a thick layer of foundation on my face. Instantly, the face in the mirror turned deathly pale!
The woman didn’t go far. Instead, she pressed her aged face against the windowsill, her sclera more prominent than her irises, watching as the young girls did my makeup and fixed me up, all while speaking slowly.
“Our young master passed away due to illness. Your birth characters were matched, and you’re the most compatible. Even though this is a Ghost Marriage, once you marry into our Wei Family, you become the eldest young mistress. Everyone in the household will treat you with utmost respect. As long as you remain loyal and unwavering, you’ll live a life of luxury in the Gu Family.”
I understood what she meant she wanted me to remain a widow for life. But what era is this? Not only do we have an extremely feudal practice like Ghost Marriage, but they are even feudalistic ally believe that lifelong chastity is loyalty…
If the girls hadn’t been applying lipstick on me, I would have argued fiercely and given her a piece of my mind!
A Ghost Marriage has no legal effect. If I run away, what can he possibly do to me?!
But then a faint, raspy voice came from beneath me, “Little girl, you shouldn’t ignore what the old woman said. If you suffer the consequences later, there’ll be nowhere to cry.”
I followed the sound and looked down.
Oh my god.
I saw a man with a lizard’s tail coiled on the ground, tilting his head as he spoke to me while constantly flicking his red forked tongue in and out, out and in…
It scared me so much I even forgot to close my mouth…
That thing wasn’t human!
