Living in the Beast World With a System - Chapter 61
No sooner had Wu Yue spoken than the females nearby burst into laughter. “Having a single leaf left is already lucky.”
They spoke without malice. Shui also smiled awkwardly. “I’ve got a lot of little ones at home. It’s hard to keep food around. I had to hide that leaf. Otherwise, the little ones would’ve found it and eaten it.”
Looking at the limp leaf in her hand, Wu Yue felt a sting in her heart. “It’s fine. I can find this wild green just from this leaf.”
She smiled at the females around her. “My mother used to teach me about this herb.”
“You’re saying this is a herb?” Shui looked surprised at the little leaf in her hand.
Wu Yue nodded. “Yes. We eat a lot of meat. If someone gets sores in their mouth, eating more of this herb can help with the pain.”
The other females looked at her with newfound respect. Shui scooted closer. “Yue, are you a Wu?”
Wu Yue gave a bitter smile. “I’m not a Wu. My mother was once a Wu’s apprentice, so she taught me some herbs. Sometimes, she’d teach me while we gathered together.”
The females let out sighs of relief, then continued chatting around Wu Yue about wild greens.
Here, any edible plant was called wild greens. Even the bitter greens had been named by Wu Yue when she first collected them. Qing Hua and Qing Cao had followed her naming.
When Wu Yue told them this plant was called dandelion, everyone looked at Shui’s leaf with mixed expressions.
“This wild green doesn’t look like an eagle beastman at all.”
“Wus sure give strange names to herbs.”
The females chattered away about the name dandelion. Clever Wu Yue quietly backed away from the discussion. Otherwise, she would be dragged into endless questioning.
After walking for about another half hour, Hua Shu finally stopped at the edge of a forest.
“Listen carefully, everyone. Once we enter the woods, don’t stray too far from the team. Don’t wander outside the males’ patrol area.
“Even though it’s close to the tribe, wild beasts still appear. Understood?”
The females responded loudly. Hua Shu gave a satisfied nod and waved for them to begin gathering freely.
She called Wu Yue to her side. “Yue, this is your first time joining our team. You’ll stay with me this time.”
As they walked toward a shady area, she asked, “I heard from Ye Duo’s mother that you got injured last time you gathered?”
Wu Yue nodded, feeling awkward. “I’ve always had poor health. My parents never let me join tribe gatherings. So, that was my first time trying it on my own. That’s how I got hurt.”
Hua Shu nodded. “Then you need to get used to it soon. You don’t have a male. If your gathering skills don’t improve, you’ll end up hungry.”
Wu Yue nodded. “I understand. Thank you, Auntie Hua Shu.”
Hua Shu waved her hand. “Soon, we’ll be trading with the chief for salt. Everyone has a set amount they can exchange. You’ll need to collect more food to get your full share.
“If you only have enough for part of the salt, then someone else will benefit from what you couldn’t claim.”
She even winked. “Like my family.”
