Living in the Beast World With a System - Chapter 48
“And today, we gather here to bid farewell to the tribe members who returned to the embrace of the Beast God during this salt exchange.”
The Wu’s raised staff came down hard, striking the ground with force. Blue ripples of light spread from the impact.
Within those waves of light, the crowd seemed to hear the roar of the snow tiger beastmen. Their eyes welled with tears.
Wu Yue’s heart grew heavy and sour.
The beastmen here enjoyed the best treatment and honor in the tribe. However, they also bore the greatest burdens and faced the most dangerous tasks.
What they lost was their lives. In this world where beastmen lived for hundreds of years, their bones now lay buried in foreign lands for the survival of their people.
Soft sobbing gradually spread through the gathering. These were the cries of relatives whose warriors had not returned to the tribe.
After the solemn farewell, the chief announced a large tribe-wide feast for the evening.
Beastmen roared and dashed into the forest to hunt. The females returned home to bring out the best and freshest food.
Wu Yue rolled her eyes dramatically at the droopy Qing Cao beside her.
“Stop sulking. There’s a feast tonight, isn’t there? Just do your best to shine then.”
Qing Cao looked at Wu Yue with a sorrowful gaze.
“Yue, do you think I was too cowardly? I should’ve stepped up back there. They must’ve mistaken you for me. Beast warriors don’t like skinny females. They probably think I’m unhealthy.”
Wu Yue fell silent.
Girl, I can understand your blunt honesty, but can you spare my fragile little heart, too?
Do I not have any dignity?
Wu Yue gave her a sideways glance.
“Am I really that terrible in your eyes?”
Qing Cao let out an awkward laugh.
“Not really, but Yue, your hair is so fluffy and your face is so small. You kind of look like a warrior from the Wild Lion Tribe.”
As if remembering something, she quickly added, “Just the head part, of course. Wild Lion Tribe warriors are really strong.”
It was not terribly hurtful, but the insult came through loud and clear.
Wu Yue felt like their friendship was approaching its tragic end. She was ready to say goodbye to Qing Cao the dagger-tongued friend.
Of course, right after raising this flag in her heart, she was smacked with a big, loud reality check.
The two who had declared they would part ways were now huddled together again by nightfall. Why?
Because Qing Hua had come to Wu Yue’s house earlier that day and seriously told her something that caught her completely off guard.
“The cave you temporarily stayed in before belongs to the warrior Yuan Lang. You need to prepare some food as thanks.”
Wu Yue’s face twisted in distress.
“There’s a rule like that?”
Qing Hua and Qing Cao looked at her with the kind of gaze one gives a hopeless case.
“You don’t know anything. This is a rare chance to interact with a beast warrior. If you leave a good impression on Yuan Lang, he might choose you as one of his mates.”
What the heck!
Wu Yue’s eyes went wide.
What did they mean one of his mates? Wasn’t this place a one-female-many-males kind of world?
“Why wouldn’t he become one of my mates?”
Her innocent question brought silence crashing down in the house.
The two females stared at her with their mouths wide open. Shock poured from their eyes.
Qing Cao stammered,
“Yue, that’s a good thought. Maybe try raising the grass under your head a bit higher when you sleep.”
Qing Hua was more blunt.
“Only powerful people get to choose their mates. Yue, you’re so weak. If a male is even willing to have you, you should count yourself lucky. Let alone a strong beast warrior.”
