Living in the Beast World With a System - Chapter 37
Wu Yue said goodbye to Qing Hua and Qing Cao, then returned to her cave.
She had always thought those straw huts were for slaves. Who would have thought they were actually for pure humans? And now, that would be her future home.
“Host, do not be discouraged. You will have meat. You will have a cave. For now, would you like to consider submitting the grass carp task?”
The system’s voice sounded unusually flattering. It could tell the host was feeling a bit down, and as a responsible system, it felt obligated to offer some hope to lift her spirits. It even felt strangely noble about it.
“System, I’ve finished the grass carp task.” Her eyes lit up immediately as she looked toward her small nest with eager anticipation.
“Task complete, objective was to capture twenty grass carp and the reward is one cutting board, keep up the good work, Host.”
With that announcement, a stone slab about the size of a laptop appeared inside the cave.
That familiar pattern. That familiar texture.
Wu Yue gritted her teeth and shouted her nickname for the system. “You stupid system!”
Hiding in a dusty corner of its code, the system continued flipping through its manual without even looking up.
Sensing the system’s silence, Wu Yue’s chest rose and fell with fury. “Didn’t you say it was supposed to be an amazing cutting board?”
Aside from being a bit bigger, this thing looked exactly like the slab she had dragged back earlier. What was the difference?
“Well now, Host, please don’t get upset. I just checked the manual. This board is actually pretty impressive. You shouldn’t judge it by appearance alone. It gets sensitive.”
Wu Yue narrowed her eyes. “I’m more hurt than it is. I’ll give you one chance. Convince me. I want to know what makes this thing so amazing.”
The system laughed nervously to please her. “First of all, this board is very light and easy to carry. And also, blah blah blah… Why not just try it yourself?”
Wu Yue eyed the sturdy-looking board suspiciously. She lifted one corner experimentally. “Huh?”
Sure enough, it looked bulky, but it was not heavy at all. More importantly…
She examined the board in her hand, which was just slightly larger than her palm, and nodded with satisfaction.
“The folding feature is not bad at all.”
The system wiped away imaginary sweat from its code. Finally, she was pleased.
“Host, would you like to sell the remaining grass carp for points?”
Wu Yue recalled where the grass carp had come from and nodded without hesitation. “Sell them. Every last one.”
“Ding. Grass carp sold. Gained twenty-one points. Current total: thirty-seven points. Please keep up the good work.”
Wu Yue beamed. “System, how many points is each grass carp worth?”
“One point each.”
Wu Yue’s eyes practically glowed. She silently decided to catch more grass carp when she had the time.
“New long-term mission unlocked. [Food] Find a type of food not currently known to the Snow Tiger Tribe. Reward: ten points. Bonus reward: method for weaving a back basket.”
The mechanical voice echoed again. As soon as Wu Yue heard the reward, her heart began to pound.
A method to make back baskets! Now that was a truly useful reward.
“System, give me more missions like that.”
The system sounded speechless. “Dear Host, that is a mainline mission. All those other tasks you did before were triggered missions. The rewards cannot be compared.”
Wu Yue stared in disbelief. “There are levels to the rewards?”
The system scoffed. “Of course there are. Right now, your points only allow access to the lifestyle category of the mainline missions.”
Wu Yue’s eyes sparkled again. “So, there are more exciting missions, too?”
The system replied coldly. “Weakling host, please work harder. A wonderful life is waiting for you.”
Heh. Stupid system. No love at all.
