Living in the Beast World With a System - Chapter 30
Yuan Lang turned his head to the two beastmen beside him. “How are they?”
The middle-aged beastman frowned and shook his head. “Same as you. We dug them out from under the pile of beast corpses. They were still breathing.”
He exhaled slowly, as if trying to press down the sorrow in his chest. “Their injuries are not as bad as yours, but they still have not woken up.”
Yuan Lang tried to move his arms, yet he could not summon any strength. His dark eyes turned toward the older beastman. “Uncle, feed them the herb.”
The middle-aged beastman’s lips moved, but he only sighed. Then he stood and divided the remaining herb in half, placing it into the mouths of the two unconscious warriors.
“Beast God, please watch over them.”
The forest gradually grew quiet. Except for a few patrolling beastmen, most had already taken their beast forms and slept curled beside one another.
Only Yuan Lang stayed awake. He gazed through the thick branches toward the small patch of sky above. He wondered what had become of Teng Qian and Teng Kun.
When he thought of the two vice-captains who had risked their lives to stay with him, Yuan Lang’s eyes dimmed. The dirt-smeared lines of his face grew even colder.
The chattering of birds signaled the start of a new day. When Wu Yue opened her eyes, the mouth of the cave had already grown bright.
Suddenly, a foul stench filled her nose. Her face twisted in disgust and she started to retch.
“Ugh, System, weren’t you supposed to keep watch last night? How dare you slack off!” Wu Yue pinched her nose and leapt up, shouting inside her mind.
The system sounded bewildered at first, then burst into anger. “I stayed up all night keeping watch, and you accuse me of slacking off?”
Wu Yue stomped. “Then how did something come into my cave and poop? I’m about to die from the smell!”
The system fell silent.
After a pause, it suddenly broke into cackling laughter, then mocked her without mercy. “You fool of a host. That awful smell is coming from you. Go ahead, lift your arm and take a whiff. You are a walking poison bomb.”
Wu Yue froze.
After a long moment, she slowly raised one arm. Before it even reached her nose, the stench drifted up and attacked her senses.
“Blegh—”
What kind of godforsaken smell is this?
Unable to stand herself another moment, Wu Yue snatched up a bundle of dry grass and ran toward the river, trailing a soul-shaking stink behind her.
Along the way, she even knocked out several beastmen warriors who had especially sensitive noses.
When she arrived at the riverbank, Wu Yue stood in place, hesitating. She stretched her neck, lifted one leg, and shifted awkwardly, but she could not bring herself to step in.
Watching his host act like a frightened pup, the system curled its lip in disgust. “Host, for the peace of the Snow Tiger Tribe, please wash up as soon as possible.”
Wu Yue shivered. “Of course I want to wash! I’m just scared, alright? Do you not remember that grass carp with shark teeth from last time? That thing was out for blood!”
The system replied dryly. “Not bathing might kill you too.”
Or worse, it might kill everyone around her.
“Rest assured, host. With the amount of toxic gas you are giving off, no fish would dare come close. Try it if you don’t believe me.”
The system coaxed her.
Wu Yue pressed her lips together. She knew, in truth, that as long as she was not bleeding, the grass carp would not attack.
But fear was not something that vanished just because one wished it to.
She mustered her courage and dipped a single toe into the river. In an instant, the relaxed school of grass carp scattered in panic. One especially plump fish swam a little too slowly and actually flipped belly-up.
Wu Yue stood frozen. Had it fainted, or died?
