Living in the Beast World With a System - Chapter 19
That was considered a reason?
Wu Yue truly could not believe it. Her poor health was not some excuse she had conjured up. This body had been born weak, lacking the vigor of a normal, robust female.
She felt a little wronged. “When my Mother was carrying me, she hurt her body because of something that happened. So, I was born weaker than the other females.”
Was that supposed to be her fault, too?
Everyone wants a strong and healthy body.
Beside her, Qing Cao gently patted her shoulder, offering comfort. She seemed touched by how deeply Wu Yue’s Father and Mother had loved her.
In small forest tribes like the one Wu Yue came from, newborns born frail were often left in the wild to survive or perish on their own.
Those small tribes had no Wu. When someone became ill, they simply lay in their caves and waited. They waited for another sunrise, or they waited for death.
Calling on a Wu for healing cost a great deal. The prey demanded in return was too much.
Sometimes, the food needed to save one person could have kept many others alive for much longer.
“If you weren’t a member of the Snow Tiger Tribe, she wouldn’t even look at you,” Qing Hua said. Her eyes were filled with sincerity.
“Aya may be the Chief’s daughter, but she’s a pure human female. She isn’t even a half-beast. You already knew that, didn’t you?”
Wu Yue nodded. Qing Cao had just told her. Still, she remained baffled. How had two beastman parents ended up with a fully human child? Had one of them cheated?
“When both Father and Mother are beastmen, they do have a better chance of producing beastman children. But more often, they still end up with half-beasts or even pure humans.”
Her gaze dimmed. “The birth of a beastman child was incredibly rare.”
Qing Cao let out a soft sigh beside her. The strength of a tribe depended on its beastman numbers. To secure good hunting grounds and defend their territory, they had to rely on powerful beastman warriors.
That kind of strength could never be matched by half-beasts or pure humans.
“So, Aya hates weak females like me just because she’s not a beastman either?”
Qing Hua gave her a look. “Not weak females like you. Just you. Her Father and Mother were both beastmen, yet she couldn’t become a strong beastman capable of protecting the tribe. She hates the weak because she believes they drag the tribe down.”
Wu Yue, who clearly dragged the tribe down: So in the end, it all came down to me being too weak.
“You should keep your distance from her,” Qing Hua said. She stood and brushed the dust from her hands. When she looked down at Wu Yue, who remained silent, she sighed inwardly. Unless Wu Yue found a strong beastman mate, she likely would not survive the winter.
But what proud, powerful beastman would choose someone so frail as his partner?
She called out to her mate, then turned and left.
Only Wu Yue and Qing Cao remained there, crouched on the ground in a daze.
Her beast hide pouch bulged at the waist, but inside Wu Yue felt hollow. A quiet kind of loss stirred within her.
Qing Cao took her hand and pulled her up. “Yue, you don’t have to worry so much. Aya may have a bad temper, but she wouldn’t harm someone from her own tribe.”
Wu Yue tugged the corners of her mouth into a dry smile. “I’m not worried. And I’m not afraid of her either. I’m just trying to figure out how to survive in this world.”
“This world?” Qing Cao tilted her head. “What do you mean?”
Wu Yue grinned and quickly changed the topic. “Now that I’m part of the Snow Tiger Tribe, I definitely can’t be a burden. I’ll do my best to gather food.”
“With the great and all-powerful system by your side, Host, your rise to glory is just a dream away!”
The arrogant system popped up once more, doing its best to make sure she hadn’t forgotten it.
