Chapter 86

White Hydrangea handed over the communicator. Timothy glanced at it briefly, indicating that it didn’t want to look at it right now.

Qian Hui noticed the communicator in White Hydrangea’s hand and asked in surprise, “Maomao, is this yours?”

Timothy’s tail twitched, and it nodded with a dignified air. “Woo.”

There was no point in hiding it. If it hadn’t contacted the base in advance, who knows what might have happened today?

Qian Hui, curious, picked up the communicator and opened it, immediately seeing a message from Chili Pepper.

His surprise deepened as he scrolled up, his eyes widening. “Maomao, you…”

At that moment, Chili Pepper and Sweet Pepper slowly approached, pressing close to Qian Hui’s hand and staring intently at Timothy.

Sweet Pepper was still a bit dizzy. How had Timothy contacted them? Had it been secretly nearby all along?

“Woo?” Sweet Pepper voiced its confusion. Timothy patted its head with the tip of its tail.

“Woo.” It was simple, requiring no effort at all.

Sweet Pepper scratched its head. Beside it, Chili Pepper held the communicator nervously, clearing its throat softly.

It greeted Timothy cautiously and solemnly, explaining that it was the plant that had been communicating with it all along.

Chili Pepper’s emotions were complex, a mix of excitement and disbelief.

It desperately wanted to meet this mysterious plant, mainly because the other party could also use human language and Communicators.

This was extremely rare among mutated plants. Even Lettuce and Carrot, who were well-versed in human affairs, had only known a few simple numbers before the establishment of the base.

Therefore, Chili Pepper felt it absolutely had to find a chance to meet this plant and see what kind of being it was.

But it never expected…

Chili Pepper had witnessed Timothy’s timely arrival and successful reversal of the battle, which also cleared up some lingering doubts.

No wonder… This mysterious plant was truly formidable!

Chili Pepper gazed at Timothy with boundless admiration, its eyes sparkling.

Timothy tilted its head, studying Chili Pepper. “Woo…”

In truth, it had recognized Chili Pepper’s voice the moment it heard it.

This little skinny pepper isn’t bad at all… Its skills are quite impressive too.

Chili Pepper understood Timothy’s praise and grew even more delighted and excited.

Sweet Pepper, watching from the side, felt a pang of dissatisfaction.

It silently waited for Chili Pepper and Timothy to exchange a few more words before finding an excuse to pull Chili Pepper away.

In a quieter grassy area, Chili Pepper’s excitement remained undiminished. Sweet Pepper hesitated, then blurted out, asking if Chili Pepper could teach it to read too.

Chili Pepper had mentioned this before, even teaching Carrot and Carnivorous Flower, but Sweet Pepper had always dismissed human writing as useless and refused to learn.

Hearing this, Chili Pepper immediately nodded. “Woo!”

Of course!

Although they now had the Plant Dictionary, plants could only use human Communicators, which lacked comprehensive symbols.

Learning to read would allow everyone to carry a Communicator and communicate effectively in emergencies.

Sweet Pepper’s spirits lifted. It secretly vowed to learn more characters than Timothy.

Meanwhile, Timothy remained blissfully unaware of this silent competition. After using its ability to travel overnight and recently unleashing a powerful stored attack, it was understandably exhausted.

It nestled comfortably in Qian Hui’s arms, burying its head to swallow two more pills.

Qian Hui’s game interface was open, displaying Timothy’s encyclopedia entry:

Species: Timothy

Grade: Special-Grade

Status: Feeling fatigued

Loyalty: 100%

Basic Skill: Tail Needle (Maximum 30 consecutive shots, semi-controllable, 80% accuracy)

Advanced Skill: Tail Needle (Maximum 50 consecutive shots, fully controllable, 95% accuracy); Spatial Compression/Expansion/Movement (Volume within 50m?)

Berserk Skill: Spatial Compression/Expansion/Movement (Volume within 500m?)

Combat Preparation Details: None

This skill… seems incredibly powerful. No wonder the massive attacks on the base could be redirected and repositioned so easily.

Qian Hui, only half-understanding, grabbed some food and fed it to Timothy.

Timothy sniffed the food carefully, then opened its mouth and slowly ate from Qian Hui’s hand, completely forgetting its earlier declaration of leaving.

While feeding Timothy, Qian Hui also gave a few bites to White Hydrangea beside it. The other newly arrived plants were nearby, being cared for by Little Cabbage and the others.

White Hydrangea continued to steal glances at Qian Hui. As it ate the food he offered, it couldn’t resist inching closer, boldly extending its arms.

Seeing White Hydrangea’s affection, Qian Hui simply picked it up along with Timothy.

Suddenly receiving the same treatment as the leader, White Hydrangea shrank back, afraid to move, until it confirmed that Timothy didn’t intend to drive it away. Only then did it slowly relax.

It lifted its head, curiously reaching out to touch Qian Hui’s silver hair.

Around them, the plants were busy or resting. Before long, four Flyers returned to the base.

Carrot and several other plants immediately rushed forward to inquire about the situation outside.

Potato reported that stones had been hurled into the sky, striking the Flyers. Lettuce confirmed it was the Giant Corpse—it loved to do that.

Corn tenderly stroked the small dents on the Flyers’ edges, still shaken by the near miss.

Fortunately, they had reacted quickly… but the Zombie King hadn’t shown itself. The stones and dozen or so low-grade zombies were likely just a probe.

It was also fortunate that Timothy had arrived in time. The battle with the Ability User team had ended relatively quickly. Though the plants had expended energy, combined with the base’s defenses, they still had enough strength to resist the zombies.

Or perhaps the Giant Corpse’s Zombie Horde was so vast that it hadn’t fully arrived in the area yet, and it wouldn’t act rashly.

But one thing was certain: after all this time, the Giant Corpse hadn’t left. Its target was undoubtedly this place.

Qian Hui’s worry grew. “Does it want to attack us too?”

In the past, when Zombie Hordes besieged human bases, they rarely targeted specific individuals. But the existence of the Plant Base was unprecedented.

Moreover, the plants had successfully killed Zombie King 03. If Zombie King 02 learned of this, it would likely perceive a threat, explaining why it had set its sights on the Plant Base.

Having just resolved one major crisis, a new one had already arrived.

The plants gradually gathered, the Sunflower’s light flickering faintly.

Carrot wore a solemn expression, while Big Pea and Cabbage stood beside Carnivorous Flower, with Nut nearby.

Lettuce rubbed its hands together and sneered.

Come on, then. Who’s afraid of whom?

I’m not the same pathetic plant I was that day. My Bewitching Mist is far more effective against zombies now.

Pomelo quietly approached, stroking its belly in deep thought.

By tonight, my energy-charged attack will be ready. I wonder if it will be as effective against zombies as it is against other threats.

Timothy listened silently, then stood up, stretched lazily, and hopped down from Qian Hui’s arms.

It circled Qian Hui once, then tilted its chin to survey all the surrounding plants before settling down on the grass ahead.

Timothy flicked its tail behind it. “Woo!”

Exactly! What’s there to be afraid of? I’m here.

The plants I brought can help too.

Hearing their leader’s command, over twenty colorful flower-type plants nearby stood up in response.

Peony Flower waved its leafy fists, shouting the loudest, “Woo!”

Qian Hui pulled Timothy back into his arms and stroked the small leaf tip sprouting from its head. “Maomao, you’ll stay with us, right? We all miss you so much.”

Timothy pretended to ponder, then swayed its tail tip with dignified restraint. “Woo.”

If that’s the case, I can stay temporarily, until we deal with those zombies.

Sunflower helped relay the message, and Qian Hui automatically ignored the word “temporarily,” happily picking up Timothy and kissing it.

Now that all the plants from the Little Courtyard had returned to his side, and Nan Tingjin was also here, they truly had nothing to fear.

Timothy froze for a second, then pushed Qian Hui away, jumped down to the grass, and straightened its pink headscarf.

Nearby, Little Cabbage stood on tiptoe, asking Cabbage curiously if the newly arrived plant was particularly strong.

Their logistics squad had been stationed inside the base, so they hadn’t witnessed the battles outside.

Before Cabbage could answer, Big Pea quietly leaned in. “Woo!”

Don’t you dare provoke it!

Among all the plants in the Little Courtyard, Timothy’s combat strength wasn’t actually exceptional.

But its advanced skill was highly unique. When fighting it, a punch you threw might suddenly land on your own face… utterly undefendable!

Little Cabbage listened, dumbfounded, then turned to stare at Timothy, who was still adjusting its pink headscarf.

—

With no new zombies appearing outside the base, Yuan Ji confirmed the area was safe and dispatched another team to clear away the battle debris and confine the surviving combatants to the prison.

Simultaneously, multiple bases learned of the battle’s outcome.

Sky Base’s Main Base had been destroyed, the Pharmaceutical Factory reduced to rubble, and the remaining supporters of Wen Jue utterly defeated.

Nan Tingjin returned to the base briefly, accompanied by Yuan Ji on his return trip.

“I’ve already arranged for another team,” Yuan Ji said, “to search for Wen Jue’s trail at River-Sea Base.”

According to the prisoners, Wen Jue’s health had deteriorated recently, and many of his subordinates had secretly deserted him.

With so few people left by his side and nowhere else to go, he was likely still within River-Sea Base. It was best to check on him as soon as possible.

The dispatched team would capture him alive, sedate him, and bring him back to the base to be handed over to Qian Hui and the plants.

“Alright, thank you,” Qian Hui said, cautioning, “Be careful.”

“Mm, his ability can’t harm people,” Yuan Ji replied confidently. “We’re fully prepared. We’ll depart quietly tonight.”

At night, when zombies entered dormancy, it was the safest time to travel. The team took a shortcut with assistance from another base and would return by dawn.

Qian Hui remained uneasy. Seeing this, Mimosa proactively approached and carefully touched Yuan Ji’s fingertip.

It could help scout the route ahead and locate Wen Jue’s hiding place.

Yuan Ji was utterly flattered. He cupped the Mimosa, now shrunken to the size of a fingernail, in his palm. “Thank you… so much.”

By now, the Black Ridge Mountain Base had grown familiar with the plants and even fought alongside them, but their interactions had been limited to Carrot and a few others.

This was likely the first time a plant with exceptional abilities, especially one of the Support type, had willingly assisted humans.

Under the Sunflower’s radiant glow, Carrot arrived to teach Yuan Ji how to interpret Mimosa’s signals: a raised left leaf meant zombies were present, while a raised right leaf indicated plants…

Timothy squatted on the grass, glancing at Yuan Ji before turning to Nan Tingjin, who had returned to Qian Hui’s side.

Hmph… never mind.

Timothy stretched lazily, catching sight of Little Mango scurrying past.

Ignoring it, Timothy looked around for a suitable spot to nap.

Hmph… I actually quite like this new Little Courtyard.
