Chapter 82

Pomelo was completely hidden under a thick blanket of leaves, making Qian Hui feel like he was cradling a large bundle of pomelo leaves in his arms.

He pulled out some food, clumsily trying to brush off the leaves that had fallen onto him.

Taking advantage of the distraction, Pomelo quietly reached out and snatched the food with a swift whoosh.

It had initially planned to retreat to a corner to eat, but Big Peanut and Big Pea were too close together, and several other plants were clustered around the seats.

So it subtly turned its body, facing away from the others, and buried its head to munch haphazardly.

Finally, Carrot couldn’t stand it any longer. It herded the plants away, telling them to let Pomelo rest properly and not disturb it.

Big Pea, who had wanted to say a few more words to Pomelo, reluctantly returned to its seat in the front row, occasionally twisting around to glance back wistfully.

Feeling the surrounding silence, Pomelo sighed in relief and continued munching on its biscuit.

It had lost consciousness after using its energy-charged attack and had no idea what had happened or how long it had been asleep. All it knew was that it was ravenously hungry.

Qian Hui silently produced more food—dried meat and bread—and gently brushed aside the tangled pomelo leaves. “Eat slowly… Do you want some water?”

After quickly devouring an entire bag of biscuits, Pomelo finally felt like it was coming back to life and remembered the most important thing.

It parted the leaves to create a small gap, reached out to grip Qian Hui’s sleeve, and looked up with worried eyes.

Is everyone okay? Have those villains been dealt with?

And… that energy-charged attack I used back then—it was my first time. I wonder how much it helped.

Sensing Pomelo’s concern, Qian Hui took its delicate leaf-hand. “Don’t worry. Thanks to you, we’re all safe.”

Pomelo was astonished. What? Me?

Unaware of its thoughts, Qian Hui continued, “It’s all thanks to you… otherwise, it wouldn’t have gone so smoothly.”

Moreover, Pomelo’s burst of energy had come at the perfect moment. Almost all the Ability Users had launched their attacks simultaneously, only to have them all reflected back.

“We’re on our way back to the base,” Qian Hui said, tearing off half a piece of jerky and feeding it to Pomelo. “We’ll be there soon. You can rest for a while.”

Pomelo opened its mouth to eat the jerky, then froze for a long moment before snapping back to attention.

It took the remaining jerky from Qian Hui’s hand and ate it itself, then burrowed back into the pile of leaves. After a moment, it let out a muffled “hmm,” its demeanor calm, even a little indifferent.

In reality, Pomelo’s heart was pounding in the leaf pile.

Its eyes widened as it replayed Qian Hui’s words in its mind.

So… it had actually helped everyone!

Pomelo was overcome with excitement, even the leaves on its head perked up.

Silently rejoicing, it devoured a large amount of food in one go.

Finally full, Qian Hui fed Pomelo a few energy-replenishing pills and gently wiped its face with a damp cloth.

Pomelo nuzzled his palm before returning to its seat at the edge.

Just as it was about to snuggle under its blanket for a nap, Big Pea approached.

Big Pea held out a bottle of water infused with slices of fruit, offering it proactively with a friendly “Woo!”

Still wrapped in leaves, Pomelo shook its head, indicating it wasn’t thirsty and had already had water.

But Big Pea insisted on leaving the bottle, claiming the water was specially made for Pomelo and tasted very sweet.

Unable to refuse, Pomelo lowered its head and slowly reached out to accept it.

Big Pea chuckled and continued chatting with Pomelo, praising its bravery and asking what it felt like to use its special ability.

Pomelo grew nervous. “Woo…”

It had fainted, so it hadn’t felt anything…

Big Pea slapped the seat. Aiya, what a pity! Such an awesome skill!

Its eyes sparkled as it described to Pomelo how terrified the last few humans had looked.

Pomelo remained tense and nervously murmured, “Mm-hmm.”

Big Pea was about to continue when Nan Tingjin shot it a warning glance.

Up front, Carrot was also urging it to go to sleep, reminding it that it would soon need to relieve the plants in the Flyer.

Big Pea reluctantly gave up, patting Pomelo’s “shoulder” before leaving. “Woo!”

Let’s fight together again sometime!

Pomelo murmured another “Mm-hmm,” watching through the gaps in its leaves as Big Pea hopped to the front row.

It stared blankly for a moment, then slowly lay down, secretly feeling happy for a while longer.

As night deepened, the two vehicles grew much quieter. Qian Hui nestled against Nan Tingjin’s chest, fast asleep.

The Flyer above followed closely, pausing mid-journey to swap pilots before silently resuming its course.

Shortly after 4 a.m., the squad arrived at the base.

The plants at the base had been waiting anxiously all night, sleepless. Upon receiving Qian Hui’s message, several Flyers immediately scrambled to greet them.

Escorted by the Flyers, the two modified cars pierced through the maze mist and safely returned to the base.

The plants in the vehicle had also awakened. Little Lotus Root gazed curiously out the window, while the nine Little Bitter Gourds were both excited and anxious.

Big Pea quietly approached and erased the marks on the Little Bitter Gourds’ foreheads.

The car door opened, and Nan Tingjin helped Qian Hui out. Sweet Pepper immediately rushed over, “Woo woo!” It hugged Qian Hui tightly, refusing to let go as it anxiously checked him for injuries.

The base was brightly lit, and the other plants gathered around. Little Mushroom stood atop Carnivorous Flower’s head, reaching out anxiously to Qian Hui.

Qian Hui set Sweet Pepper down and picked up Little Mushroom. “Why aren’t you all asleep?”

Carnivorous Flower looked helpless. The squad was attacked on their mission. Everyone was worried and refused to leave, even after we tried to persuade them. They insisted on guarding the entrance.

Potato ran over with Big Cherry, spotting Corn and confirming it was safe.

Big Cherry, half-asleep, clutched a small woven pillow and hopped along behind Potato.

Meanwhile, Pomelo cautiously exited the vehicle, head down, trying to find a place to hide.

But as a new face, wrapped mysteriously in pomelo leaves, it immediately drew attention.

Sweet Pepper darted closer, exclaiming in delight, “Woo!”

Little Mushroom waved at Pomelo and leaped from Qian Hui’s palm.

More familiar yet unfamiliar plants approached, forcing Pomelo to stop. After a moment’s thought, it proactively parted its leaves and greeted the group.

Nut bounced over, scrutinizing Pomelo with several curious glances.

Little Cabbage and Apple stood by the vehicle door, welcoming the other new members—reportedly quite a few…

A series of soft thuds echoed from inside the vehicle as a Little Bitter Gourd hopped down.

Little Cabbage greeted it, offering a small snack. Looking up, it saw another identical Little Bitter Gourd.

The second Little Bitter Gourd jumped down, followed by a third.

Little Cabbage froze, its eyes widening in disbelief.

When nine Little Bitter Gourds appeared simultaneously, the plants’ attention shifted, allowing Pomelo to finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Carrot approached, thoughtfully leading Pomelo to the rear of the vehicle to find a place to rest.

Outside the vehicle, the nine Little Bitter Gourds stood in neat rows of three, led by Durian.

Durian wore a proud expression, as if it were one of the Bitter Gourds itself.

Sweet Pepper stared intently at the Little Bitter Gourds, counting them repeatedly, scratching its head in confusion.

Seeing Sweet Pepper’s reaction, Big Pea finally felt a sense of relief.

Nearby, Chili Pepper held a communicator, glancing up to see Qian Hui already heading toward the small wooden cabin, accompanied by Nan Tingjin and several other plants.

It was indeed late, and everyone needed rest to recover their energy and prepare for the challenges ahead.

Chili Pepper put away its communicator, deciding to tell Qian Hui about the mysterious plant tomorrow.

All flyers and modified cars were returned to their designated parking spots, and the remaining plants gradually went back to sleep.

Pomelo had already left with Carrot, while Durian continued to care for the nine Little Bitter Gourds.

Little Cabbage led Little Lotus Root to the Artificial Lake, explaining the base’s basic operations as they walked.

Little Lotus Root kept looking around, occasionally touching its right arm with a hint of longing in its eyes.

Nearby, several figures quietly followed behind.

Potato scrutinized Little Lotus Root, whispering to Corn. What’s the deal with this plant? The patterns on its arm look ominous.

Corn shook its head, admitting ignorance. Little Lotus Root is a high-grade mutant plant, you know. It must be powerful.

Mango overheard them and rubbed its palms together, eager to test its strength.

A high-grade mutant plant… I’ll find time tomorrow to challenge it!

Big Cherry, half-asleep, slowly slumped to the ground and drifted off to sleep.

Soon after, the base’s lights went out, plunging the area into the quiet of the night.

—

Shortly before 5:00 AM, a car stopped some distance away.

Timothy sat upright on the car roof, gazing at Black Ridge Mountain Base shrouded in the night.

Over twenty plants gradually emerged from the car. Jasmine conducted a final check to ensure nothing had been left behind.

Four Ability Users were also in the car, still too afraid to make any sudden moves, hoping the plants would leave quickly.

What rotten luck… They had been on a simple mission, only to be hijacked by a group of mutated plants!

Fortunately, the plants needed their car and hadn’t harmed them—yet.

These mutated plants were formidable, especially the one wearing a pink headscarf… a special-grade mutated plant.

Its ability seemed particularly unusual. The journey from where the modified car had been hijacked to this location should have taken at least a full day, yet somehow, they had arrived around 5:00 AM.

The captain of the group strained to recall something he’d heard before. There had been rumors of a powerful mutated plant appearing in Sector 7, but it had vanished long ago.

Given that this was a special-grade mutated plant leading a Plant Squad, could it be connected to those legendary mutated plants…?

The captain was certain these were two distinct groups of plants, because the ones who had hijacked them were all flower-type plants.

As he pondered, Timothy leaped down from the car roof.

Timothy slipped through the car window, its tail flicking rapidly. Four tail needles pierced the skin of everyone inside, leaving small, non-lethal blood spots.

Rose Flower, standing nearby with a Communicator, showed the captain the message written on it:

“Tonight, no loose talk. Or else…”

Timothy coldly scanned the group, its gaze radiating menace.

The captain gripped the steering wheel tightly. “U-understood…”

Timothy turned and left with Rose Flower, snatching two packs of rations from the car as it went.

Once all the plants had disembarked, the four humans finally escaped. The modified car sped away under the watchful eyes of the plants.

White Hydrangea, carrying a small bundle on its back, asked Timothy, “Woo?”

Leader, what kind of needles did you use on them?

Timothy flicked its tail. “Woo.”

Just ordinary needles. Enough to scare them.

White Hydrangea seemed to understand, though not entirely, and pressed close to Timothy, looking around.

Timothy lifted its head, gazing into the distance once more.

Black Ridge Mountain Base… We’ve finally arrived.

Let’s see who dares to ambush us.

Timothy yawned widely and instructed the plants to find a place to rest nearby.
