Level 1 Little Zombie Doomsday Growth Diary - Chapter 79
Chapter 79
The Flyers were the fastest, and Carrot and Big Pea arrived in the vicinity first, spotting the four modified cars below—the same ones they’d seen before.
No new teams had appeared, allowing Carrot to roughly assess the humans’ combat power.
Having fought human ability users before, Carrot was confident.
Their swift surprise attack gave the humans no time to react. With their limited numbers, the humans likely wouldn’t even survive the first wave of powerful assaults.
However, just as the cars were being pinned down by the onslaught, unable to escape, and the semi-transparent protective net flickered precariously, it suddenly strengthened dramatically.
In the Flyer’s co-pilot seat, Big Pea gritted his teeth, donned his weapon muzzle, and, just like during the Sky Base assault, frantically spat out green peas.
The Plant Squad below wasn’t idle either. Pomelo fed leaves into its weapon slot, which condensed into Leaf Needles that instantly pierced the protective net.
But Pomelo’s Leaf Needles could only penetrate a single layer, unable to reach the humans inside. The newly erected layers of nets immediately blocked the remaining Leaf Needles.
Realizing it couldn’t offer much help, Pomelo grew anxious. Leaves sprouted continuously from its crown, which it stuffed into the weapon slots, mirroring the actions of Cactus and Dragon Fruit beside it.
In the rear car were Big Peanut, Pumpkin, Corn, and Qian Hui, who cradled nine Little Bitter Gourds and Little Lotus Roots in his arms as he sat beside Nan Tingjin.
The Little Bitter Gourds and Little Lotus Roots, having never witnessed such a scene before, huddled together in silent fear, afraid to move. Little Lotus Root’s eyes darted nervously as it struggled to suppress the urge to move its right arm.
A narrow gap in the window beside Nan Tingjin allowed wisps of wind to seep in from outside.
Through the glass, he glanced forward.
Within the protective net across from them, several Ability Users had disembarked from their vehicles.
All of them were physical enhancement types, their muscles bulging as they gripped the iron bars beside the car doors, desperately preventing the modified cars from being overturned.
One Ability User, whose ability resembled Nan Tingjin’s own—the manipulation of inanimate objects like stone—stood at the center, forcibly closing the widening cracks in the ground.
The wind within the net seemed to still, an invisible force stabilizing everything around them.
The other team hadn’t arrived yet, and they needed to ensure the modified car remained undamaged. Otherwise, if they couldn’t withstand the attack, they’d have no chance to escape.
As it turned out, the Potion they’d consumed was indeed effective. The protective barrier became impenetrable, temporarily repelling Nan Tingjin’s control.
But the Potion wasn’t omnipotent. The burst of stored energy attacks would eventually end, and they needed to seize the opportunity to strike decisively.
The counterattack came at that moment. Carrot was surveying the situation below, preparing to unleash carrot thorns when the barrier was breached, when it noticed a massive dark cloud rapidly gathering around the Flyer.
Not good! A Lightning-type ability!
A barrage of carrot thorns immediately materialized, soaring straight into the dark cloud, hoping to disperse it as they had before.
However, the cloud coalesced too quickly, and it was too dense and thick. Only a small portion of it was weakened.
The remaining cloud rumbled ominously, and several bolts of lightning instantly struck down.
Carrot frantically maneuvered the Flyer to evade the strikes. Fortunately, the Flyer was at a high altitude, making it difficult for those below to pinpoint its exact location, and none of the lightning bolts hit the Flyer.
Several lightning bolts still targeted the Plant Squad below.
Carrot’s expression grew increasingly grave. The squad had prepared thoroughly for this mission, but without Nut’s defensive capabilities, relying solely on Money Tree’s support left their defenses somewhat lacking.
Money Tree’s shield intercepted the lightning just in time, but in an instant, a barrage of ranged attacks rained down from the opposite side.
For a moment, the two sides were evenly matched, locked in a stalemate.
Growing impatient, Corn stealthily advanced and unleashed a charged attack, spitting out a massive jelly-like blob.
The nearly pure white protective net corroded significantly, leaving several gaps.
Pomelo seized the opportunity, launching Leaf Needles from its weapon slot through the breaches.
The gaps were quickly sealed, obscuring the situation inside, but the enemy’s offensive momentum noticeably slowed.
Carrot felt a flicker of relief, anxiously scanning the distance.
Amidst the ruins, a flash of emerald green finally appeared.
Lettuce leaped across towering stone blocks, a massive Zombie Horde trailing behind it.
The horde numbered over thirty, all enthralled by Bewitching Mist, obeying Lettuce’s commands to charge toward the human team’s position.
Lettuce kneaded several leaves into small balls, filling them with Bewitching Mist. He tossed one into the Zombie Horde every so often to prevent the zombies from breaking free of his control.
The human team hiding behind the protective barrier also noticed the approaching zombies. Several members’ faces paled.
“What’s going on with these zombies…?”
“Are they only attacking us?”
“Stay calm, hold out a little longer,” the captain said in a steady voice, trying to reassure them. “Reinforcements are on their way.”
The charging attack had a short duration, and to be safe, their people hadn’t yet fully activated the Potion’s effects. They still had a chance.
Moreover, Nan Tingjin was here—the legendary figure said to command mutated plants. Could he be present as well?
The captain turned to his remaining squad members, signaling them to prepare.
Meanwhile, Little Lotus Root had already scurried under the seats, hiding alone. Whether it was out of fear or some other reason, no one knew.
Qian Hui hugged the Little Bitter Gourds tightly, anxiously watching the approaching horde.
Qian Hui never participated in the Plant Squad’s battles, but even he could sense that this situation felt different.
Just four vehicles—a human team of this size, under the element of surprise, should have been dealt with quickly in the past.
His brow furrowed slightly as he turned his gaze toward the Flyer hovering high above.
Carrot always planned their operations meticulously, ensuring they had backup plans for a swift escape.
Meanwhile, Lettuce, having lured a large horde of zombies to the area, quietly returned to the modified cars and rejoined Cabbage.
Cabbage and Four-Leaf Clover had been waiting impatiently, unable to find an opportunity to strike. The humans remained huddled behind their protective nets, refusing to emerge.
Four-Leaf Clover viciously sharpened the edges of its leaves with a whetstone, while Lettuce sighed in frustration.
If only there were more zombies nearby, they could have shown these humans what a pincer attack truly meant…
Suddenly, all three plants heard movement behind them.
Cabbage whirled around to see several new modified cars arriving, likely reinforcements for the human team.
It immediately glanced up at the Flyer, uncertain if Carrot had noticed the reinforcements.
The enemy was proving surprisingly resilient, and the arrival of reinforcements at this critical moment was unwelcome news.
Cabbage, having grown impatient, let out a low “woo” and charged forward.
It leaped onto a pile of rubble, its arms extending like springs as its gauntleted fists smashed into the lead car.
Caught off guard, the modified car was forced to screech to a halt, and the vehicles behind it were also forced to stop.
Lettuce immediately hurled a massive leaf-ball, which exploded into a thick fog that enveloped the entire abandoned street.
But humans weren’t zombies. Realizing the fog was toxic, they quickly retrieved antidote pills and swallowed them to clear their minds.
Lettuce then tossed another leaf-ball in the opposite direction, summoning the remaining Zombie Horde to trap the newly arrived human team.
Four-Leaf Clover remained still for the moment, while Cabbage swung its fists with thunderous force, each blow landing true. The fog echoed with the sounds of shattering windows and twisted metal.
The reinforcements seemed to be delayed, but at that moment, every plant—including Carrot in the Flyer—sensed something was amiss.
The white protective barrier had thinned, and the attacks from within had suddenly ceased. Both human teams fell into an eerie silence.
On the other side, the green fog lingered, and the zombies continued their relentless advance, though they seemed to be blocked from moving forward.
Lettuce wanted to investigate, but Cabbage stopped it.
Cabbage, ever vigilant, retracted its fists and led Lettuce and Four-Leaf Clover back to the modified car.
Compared to before, the surroundings were unnervingly quiet, as if something was brewing.
Nan Tingjin’s gaze narrowed slightly as he lowered the car window beside him.
Simultaneously, the rubble stones within the protective barrier levitated, shattering the windows and denting the hulls of the modified cars opposite them.
The ground trembled again, this time more violently than before.
The captain remained remarkably calm, ordering everyone to disembark.
The Ability User responsible for resisting the manipulation was exhausted, on the verge of collapsing from exhaustion.
The protective barrier, under sustained assault, grew increasingly transparent, nearing its breaking point.
The captain lowered his head to glance at the Communicator in his hand.
In an instant, the sky darkened dramatically.
Though it was only mid-afternoon, the scorching sunlight was completely obscured as dense, dark clouds coalesced overhead, forming an impenetrable black blanket.
Inside the Flyer, Carrot and Big Pea exchanged a knowing glance.
This situation was clearly going wrong… It was time to activate the escape plan.
Carrot immediately split off a wave of sharp thorns, directing them toward the forest.
This was the signal to retreat. Cactus and Starfruit, seeing it from their respective cars, immediately swerved their steering wheels.
High above, Pea unleashed a charged attack, sending a massive barrage of oversized peas raining down as the first wave of cover.
Lettuce’s burst followed immediately after, thick green smoke billowing across the ruins, obscuring the enemy’s vision.
After releasing the Bewitching Mist, Cabbage Clover burrowed into the vehicle alongside Cabbage.
The debris blocking the road ahead was telekinetically cleared, creating an unobstructed path.
Attacks launched from the weapon slots continued relentlessly as the Plant Squad, working in perfect synchronization, prepared to break through and shake off their pursuers.
Though leaving felt like a defeat, with Nut and Carnivorous Flower absent, the squad was incomplete. Given the unusual circumstances, retreat was the safest option.
Just then, the human ability users on both sides began their counterattack.
Three squads, each member having consumed a Potion, activated their abilities simultaneously upon their captains’ command.
This activation resembled the energy-charging attacks of mutated plants, temporarily amplifying their strength by three to five times.
Instantly, dozens of lightning bolts crashed down.
The sky, obscured by dark clouds, blazed as bright as day. The ground trembled violently, cracking open as a hurricane-force wind swept through the streets. Two-meter-high flames rapidly spread through the debris.
Bang! Bang! Several massive boulders slammed into the vehicle’s roof.
Nan Tingjin shielded Qian Hui in his arms. The boulders instantly bounced off the roof, causing minimal damage.
Under his control, more rocks coalesced around the two vehicles, forming a protective barrier.
The wall of flames continued to advance, while the relentless hurricane slowed the modified car’s escape.
Suddenly, another Ability User erupted from the opposite direction.
Darker clouds pressed down like a conscious hand, attempting to crush the car carrying Nan Tingjin.
But just as the clouds were about to touch the car windows, they froze in place.
Seeing this, the Plant Squad intensified their attacks without hesitation.
The Money Tree’s defensive capabilities were limited. If not for Nan Tingjin’s intervention…
Realizing the clouds had stalled, another hurricane surged forward, causing the approaching wall of flames to rise even higher.
In the other car, Pomelo clutched its leaves tightly, its heart pounding with anxiety.
It turned to look at the others, mustered its courage, and flung open the car door, tumbling out with a thump.
Big Peanut, witnessing this, cried out in alarm but couldn’t stop it in time.
The wind outside was fierce, carrying gravel and sand that tore the leaves from Pomelo’s body like tiny blades, slicing into its flesh.
Pomelo gripped a protruding rock, struggling to maintain its balance.
It has to work… it has to work… it chanted silently.
Since arriving in this world, Pomelo had never used its charged attack and was uncertain of its power. But now, it had no choice but to try.
Pomelo lowered its head, curled into a tight ball, and held its breath, focusing all its energy.
[ A mutated plant nearby has entered a Berserk State. Please take cover! (From Encyclopedia entry: “Round Pomelo”) ]
In the next instant, a pale green energy wave radiated from Pomelo’s body.
With its eyes closed, it tilted its head back and let out a loud cry: “Woo!”
Reflect!
The energy wave expanded outward, instantly reversing the surrounding dark clouds, lightning, walls of fire, and hurricane-force winds.
All the attacks were blocked and redirected back to their original sources, backfiring on their creators.
