Leisurely Life in the Beast World - Chapter 415
The beastmen moved quickly. Thanks to Ji Nuan’s insect-repellent powder, they didn’t have to worry about sudden attacks from poisonous insects or snakes, greatly speeding up their progress.
This journey made the beastmen realize the benefits of traveling with a shaman. Not only did Ji Nuan not slow the group down, but she also provided essential health and safety measures for everyone. Truly, having a shaman like Ji Nuan was indispensable for travel!
Of course, not just any shaman would suffice—it had to be one as skilled as Ji Nuan.
After three days of experimenting, Ji Nuan’s small basket of rat beasts had gone from nearly lifeless to bouncing around with energy. Through these trials, she uncovered some properties of the firefruit.
The firefruit tree as a whole was highly toxic, with the fruit’s peel being the most potent part. Contact with the peel could burn the skin and internal organs of a beastman, causing excruciating pain and even death. However, the firefruit’s leaves and its juice, when mixed together, could neutralize the peel’s poison.
If someone accidentally came into contact with the firefruit tree, they could crush the leaves and mix them with the juice to create an antidote. However, drinking the mixture beforehand wouldn’t prevent poisoning—it was strictly a reactive remedy, not a preventative one.
During her experiments, two of the rodents died after consuming only the leaves or the juice separately. Only the third rodent survived after being given the antidote mixture. Within a short time, it recovered completely and was soon leaping around in the basket, full of energy.
Ji Nuan picked up the small creature and tossed it toward a distant bush. It disappeared into the undergrowth like a drop of water into the ocean, without a trace.
Ahead, Xiu Yan’s voice called out, “Finished your experiments?”
Ji Nuan responded cheerfully, “Yes! I’ve figured it out and made an antidote for the fruit’s poison.”
Xiu Yan’s eyes glimmered with pride. “Impressive!”
Ji Nuan tilted her chin up smugly. “Of course!”
The beastmen from Watson overheard their exchange and puffed out their chests with pride. Our shaman may be young, but she’s incredible!
The group continued on, but the temperature steadily dropped. The cold seeped into their bones, and even the hardy beastmen couldn’t help but shiver. Ji Nuan, bundled in layers of beast hide, looked more like a walking bundle than a person.
“Are we close?” Ge Xing asked Xiong Dan, who was walking beside him.
Xiong Dan shook his head. “At this temperature, we still have about half a day’s travel before we reach the base of Beast God Mountain.”
Ge Xing’s lips twitched. “It’s going to get colder?”
Shi Jie chimed in, “Of course. That’s why we told you to bring hides. At these temperatures, even beastmen need extra layers.”
Xiong Dan added, “See that clearing up ahead? That’s where we usually stop to rest. Once we get there, everyone will put on their hides before continuing. If we don’t, the cold will be unbearable further ahead.”
Ge Xing nodded. “Good to know.”
The clearing had no tall trees, allowing sunlight to pour in, providing a rare touch of warmth. The Rock Tribe and Grizzly clan rummaged through their packs for hides to wrap around themselves.
Meanwhile, the beastmen from Watson grinned widely as they pulled out the specially prepared clothing made by their females and elder shaman.
With shirts and pants designed for both warmth and mobility, these garments were not only practical but stylish. To top it off, Ji Nuan had instructed the females and grandmothers to stuff the clothing with cotton, making it unbelievably cozy.
