Leisurely Life in the Beast World - Chapter 263
“Hm?” Xiu Yan’s descent paused as he frowned, looking toward the city gate.
Following his gaze, Ji Nuan squinted into the distance but saw nothing but darkness. Pouting, she asked, “What is it?”
A cold glint spread in Xiu Yan’s eyes. “It’s a beast tide. For some reason, it’s coming toward us again! I’ll take you down first and then go check it out.”
Ji Nuan grabbed the beast hide on his chest. “Take me with you. Just to look—it won’t be dangerous.”
Seeing the concern in her eyes, Xiu Yan hesitated for a moment before nodding. He wrapped his arms tightly around her, flapped his wings, and quickly flew toward the city gate.
On the ground, the beastmen were already preparing for battle. The females, cubs, and elderly beastmen were instructed to stay in their tents and not come out unless absolutely necessary.
Xiu Yan’s rapid flight was astonishing, and in the blink of an eye, he landed atop the city wall. He set Ji Nuan down and draped his beast hide over her shoulders. “Stay here. I’ll go see what’s happening.”
Ji Nuan nodded obediently and watched as Xiu Yan and several eagle beastmen disappeared into the darkness.
“Ji Nuan cub, Xiu Yan and Ying Yan are gone?” Ge Xing approached with his long strides.
Ji Nuan furrowed her brow and nodded. “Yes. The beast tide had already retreated to the forest’s edge. Why is it suddenly here again tonight?”
Ge Xing shook his head as he stared into the dark distance. “I just asked the shaman, but she isn’t sure either.”
He turned to Ji Nuan. “You should go back and rest. The feral beasts can’t breach the walls, and we’ll know more when Xiu Yan and the others return.”
Ji Nuan shook her head. “I wouldn’t be able to sleep with things like this. I’ll wait here.”
Ge Xing nodded, not pressing her further. Instead, he stood with her on the city wall, gazing out into the distance.
The beast tide surged forward like a torrential flood, and Ji Nuan finally caught a clear view of what they faced. Illuminated by the torches along the wall, the terrifying beasts, with their blood-red eyes, were chasing a group of beastmen toward the Watson Tribe.
The unknown beastmen screamed as they ran. “Please save us! We are—ah!!!”
The feral beasts, ravenous from hunger, gave them no chance to finish their pleas. The tide crashed over them, devouring them entirely in a chaotic frenzy.
Red-eyed and bloodthirsty, the feral beasts caught the scent of the beastmen inside the walls. They began slamming against the city wall, vying to climb over. Each beast that collided with the wall fell bloodied and broken, only to be devoured by those behind it.
Ji Nuan grew anxious. “The beast tide is already here. Why haven’t brother Xiu Yan and the others returned?”
Ge Xing frowned as well. “Don’t worry. They’re all flying beastmen; they won’t be in any danger. Let’s wait a little longer.”
Ji Nuan nodded, calming herself as best as she could while continuing to wait.
Time passed slowly. Only when the feral beasts, realizing the impenetrable strength of the Watson Tribe’s walls, reluctantly retreated, did the figures of Xiu Yan and the others finally appear in the distance.
“Huh? What are they dragging?” Ge Xing squinted, his face filled with confusion as he watched the flying beastmen approach.
In the dim night, Ji Nuan couldn’t see clearly. She strained her eyes, but could only make out their vague silhouettes. “I don’t know. I can’t see it clearly.”
