The surrounding beastmen were terrified by the scene. How could such a dangerous thing be something for cubs to play with? What if something happened to them?

The beastmen hurried forward, using their hands and feet to pull the group of mischievous cubs out of the cotton pile.

The cubs’ fathers each picked up their own cubs and delivered several firm pats to their round, chubby bottoms. However, the cubs, accustomed to playing rough with their fathers, thought it was all just another game. They waved their short, pudgy little paws, making playful “awoo, awoo” sounds, hanging upside down like little round dumplings. Their adorable antics melted the beastmen’s hearts almost instantly.

Sharing helpless glances, the beastmen could only set the little ones down and gently pat their plump bottoms. “Go back to your moms. This thing is dangerous, and you shouldn’t play here anymore!”

Reluctantly, the cubs turned their fuzzy little faces back toward the cotton pile, clearly unwilling to leave. But under the stern gazes of their fathers, they drooped their heads and shuffled off glumly.

Once they returned to their mothers, the cubs began whining pitifully, seeking comfort and sympathy. It was only then that the beastmen noticed something strange.

“Huh? Why doesn’t it itch anymore?”

“Yeah, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable at all!”

“What’s going on?”

Ji Nuan pulled her hand out of the water and shook off the droplets. “Brother Xiu Yan, why don’t you give it a try? The beastmen are saying it doesn’t itch anymore!”

Xiu Yan’s usually sharp eyes widened in surprise. His gaze seemed to carry a hint of grievance. I didn’t want you to feel any discomfort, and now you’re asking me to grab this itchy fluff?

Realizing how it sounded, Ji Nuan chuckled awkwardly and quickly patted his arm. “Brother Xiu Yan, I wouldn’t ask you if I wasn’t sure it’s fine. The other beastmen touched it and said it’s okay now!”

She even batted her eyes at him for good measure.

The surrounding beastmen immediately felt indignant. So we were the test subjects, and now you feel confident enough to send Xiu Yan in? How unfair!

Xiu Yan’s wounded pride seemed to heal under Ji Nuan’s words. Nodding slightly, he said, “Alright, I’ll check.”

He walked over, grabbed a handful of cotton, and rubbed it between his hands. Switching hands, he rubbed it again for good measure.

Turning back to Ji Nuan, he said, “It really doesn’t itch at all.”

Ji Nuan tilted her chin thoughtfully. “It seems like it’s because it was left out here under the sun.”

A nearby beastman chimed in, “But this kind of plant grows right next to the green mud area and gets sunlight all the time. Why does it still make us itchy when we touch it?”

Ji Nuan walked in a small circle before responding, “It’s probably because you cut it down and let it dry here. That’s why it doesn’t itch anymore.”

The beastmen’s eyes lit up. “That’s it! Should we go get more to test this?”

Beastmen were nothing if not action-oriented. The moment the idea was voiced, a few of them immediately sprang into action. Before long, they came back, each carrying bundles of cotton as big as small hills.

Throwing the cotton onto the ground, they fled toward the river as though being chased by a ferocious beast.

Ji Nuan shook her head in amusement. “Alright, everyone, disperse. Stop staring and focus on building the houses. Once they’re done, everyone will have comfortable homes to live in!”

At the mention of houses, the beastmen seemed to light up with renewed energy. Rolling up their sleeves, they threw themselves into their work as if energized by her words.
