Seeing the disbelief in the chiefs’ faces, Ying Da grew anxious. Kneeling upright, he explained, “It’s true! The Watson Tribe built a wall themselves to keep out the wild beasts. They used beautiful green stones to build it—tall and thick. Any wild beast that charges at it is immediately reduced to a pile of flesh. That’s why the beasts don’t linger near their tribe.”

Xiong Dan nodded in agreement. “That wall does exist. I visited the Watson Tribe before the beast tide hit. Back then, the wall wasn’t finished yet, but I saw those green stones. They were deep green, smooth, and beautiful. I even thought about taking a piece back for my mate.”

Ying Da eagerly added, “They also have three eagle beastmen and a silver-winged wolf beastman who hunt daily at the forest’s edge. They kill stray wild beasts and bring them back to the tribe. They’re never short on food.”

At last, the four chiefs began to believe Ying Da’s words. Xiong Dan looked up at him. “Did you meet their chief?”

Thinking of Ge Xing, Ying Da’s expression twitched. “I did. He told me to let you know that he and the Watson Tribe are doing well. He also thanked you for your concern. When I was leaving, they even fed me three huge bowls of food—this big!”

Ying Da gestured with his hands, showing a size larger than his own face. “The food was amazing, the best I’ve ever eaten.”

Hearing this, Teng Kui’s eyes lit up with greed as he turned to Xiong Dan. “Xiong Dan, you have a good relationship with the Watson Tribe. Why don’t you ask if they’ll let all of us stay within their walls? Once the beast tide is over, we can return to our lands.”

Shi Jie glanced at Ying Da. “You must be tired. Go rest now; tomorrow’s patrol will be another long day.”

Understanding the chiefs needed to discuss privately, Ying Da nodded and left the cave.

Inside, Xiong Dan sneered at Teng Kui. “You think I don’t know what you’re planning? You want to use my connection to get into the Watson Tribe, take over their territory, and steal their food and females, don’t you?”

Teng Kui’s eyes flickered, but he no longer tried to hide his intentions. “So what if I am? It’s for everyone’s benefit. The beast tide shows no signs of retreating. Do we just sit here and watch our people get eaten alive?”

Sang Guo nodded in agreement. “I support Teng Kui. Our numbers are already dwindling. If this continues, we’ll have no place at this year’s grand gathering.”

Xiong Dan turned to Shi Jie. “What’s your opinion?”

Shi Jie gave Teng Kui and Sang Guo a disdainful look. “You’re so naïve. Do you think you’re the only clever ones here? Do you think the Watson Tribe are fools who would let us all move in and take over their territory?”

He continued, voice sharp, “Have you even thought about how we’d get there? Even if Xiong Dan convinces them to take us in and they agree, how would we move so many of our people? Do you think the wild beasts outside will just sit back and watch us cross their path without devouring us?”

With that, he slapped the beast skin mat and stood up. “I, Shi Jie, would rather fight those cursed wild beasts to the bitter end than harm the Watson Tribe. If you want to go, go on your own!”

He turned and stormed out of the cave.
