Leisurely Life in the Beast World - Chapter 243
Ge Xing scratched his head awkwardly, laughing. “Hehe, as long as we’re not eating those two weird fish, that’s fine. But other than them, what else could there be in the river?”
Ji Nuan sighed. “This river outside the wall is just a tributary of the Ainilu River. There may not even be crocodiles or predator fish.”
“Could there be green ox beasts or yellow sheep beasts in the river?”
“Maybe there are cluck-cluck beasts or quack-quack beasts too!”
“Ji Nuan is amazing—she even knows what kind of prey lives in the water!”
Faced with the group’s glowing admiration, Ji Nuan was at a loss. She chuckled helplessly and waved her hand. “Stop guessing. There are no green ox beasts, cluck-cluck beasts, or quack-quack beasts in the river. What we’re going to catch is fish. Not crocodiles or predator fish, but a type of herbivorous fish. Once we catch them, I’ll teach everyone how to cook fish. Properly cooked, they’ll taste even better than stir-fried meat.”
Her words triggered a collective sound of gulping from the gathered beastmen. Seeing their green, glowing eyes, Ge Xing bared his teeth and growled, “Look at you all, acting like you’ve never eaten before!”
Ge Tai glanced at him. “Father, I saw you gulping just now.”
Ge Xing shot him a sharp glare. Brat, are you trying to embarrass your father in front of everyone?
The tribe burst into laughter.
Ge Xing’s face flushed red. “What are you laughing at? Stop it! Now, let’s get to work. Xiu Yan, you and a few eagle beastmen will dig trenches outside, like the ones we made around the tribe before. Don’t connect them to the river just yet. The rest of you will divide into three groups: one to dig inside the walls, one to keep building houses, and one to prepare materials. Keep working steadily; we can’t let up on construction.”
The beastmen nodded.
Ji Nuan added thoughtfully, “Chief, even though this is a tributary and may not have predator fish or crocodiles, we should still be cautious. Have the beastmen use black ironwood to make a fence near the wall. Predator fish aside, crocodiles can climb onto land too.”
Ge Xing’s eyes widened. “What?! Those weird fish can climb out of the water?”
Ji Nuan nodded seriously.
The beastmen busied themselves digging and building, while Ji Nuan led the females in weaving the first fishing net of the beast continent using collected vines. The net was crude, with holes that were far too large, leaving Ji Nuan uncertain if it could even catch fish.
After some thought, Ji Nuan walked over to the wall and called out loudly, “Xiu Yan, come in for a moment. I need your help with something.”
Before her words fully settled, the tall beastman descended from the sky, his wings spread wide. His gaze was warm as he looked at her. “What is it, Nuan Nuan?”
Ji Nuan handed him the crude fishing net. “Xiu Yan, this is the net we just finished weaving. Can you take it out and test if it can catch fish?”
Xiu Yan examined the net, nodded, and replied, “Alright. Wait here.” He flapped his wings and took off, flying out toward the river.
Ji Nuan returned to the area where the females were weaving. They looked at her expectantly. “How did it go? Did we catch any fish yet?”
Ji Nuan chuckled. “You’re too impatient! I just gave the net to Xiu Yan. How could it be that fast?”
The females scratched their heads sheepishly and laughed.
The waiting felt endless. Only a few minutes passed, but it felt like hours.
“Ji Nuan, look! Is that Xiu Yan coming back?” one of the females exclaimed, pointing toward the sky.
