Without hesitation, the elder shaman turned and grabbed onto the vines, beginning his climb up the wall. Below, the beasts had reached the base and began leaping up to tear at the hanging vines. Xiu Yan and the other eagle beastmen worked tirelessly, pulling up several beastmen to safety.

As the wild beasts clawed and bit at the vines, the ropes shook violently, causing the beastmen climbing them to sway dangerously. Xiu Yan and the eagle beastmen strained themselves to speed up the rescue. Their arms were bruised black and blue from the effort, looking almost terrifying.

“Ahhh!” Suddenly, the vine holding the elder shaman shook violently. A wounded beastman climbing above him lost his grip and began falling.

The elder shaman’s pupils contracted. He reached out and caught the falling beastman, quickly wrapping him in the vine to secure him. Just as the shaman sighed in relief, the vine trembled violently again. Holding onto the vine with one hand, the shaman couldn’t stabilize himself and slipped. He barely managed to secure the beastman with the vine before plummeting.

From the wall, the beastmen’s faces turned pale with horror. Sa Miu’er and the beastman who had just been saved wept uncontrollably as they watched. In the final moment before falling into the beast tide, the elder shaman shouted at the top of his lungs, “Join the Watson Tribe!”

“Shaman!”

“Shaman, no!”

The elder shaman’s figure was swallowed by the horde of beasts. The sharp scent of blood filled the air, carried by the warm-season wind, lingering in the noses of all the beastmen.

The remaining vines were pulled up onto the wall, but the Green Mountain Tribe’s revered shaman was lost forever to the merciless beast tide.

The beastmen of the Green Mountain Tribe collapsed on the wall, wailing in grief. Females and cubs wept sorrowfully, their cries piercing the heavy, somber air of the Watson Tribe.

The Shaman of Watson sighed and stepped forward to support Sa Miu’er, whose eyes were red and swollen from crying. “Stand up, child. Your Shaman has gone to serve the Beast God now. He has journeyed to a place without beast tides, without pain, without cold, and without hunger. We should be blessing his path.”

Sa Miu’er nodded, wiping his tears. He turned to Ge Xing and the beastmen from Watson. “If it weren’t for your rescue today, our Green Mountain Tribe would have been completely wiped out in the Ainilu Forest. The shaman hoped we could join the Watson Tribe. I ask for your permission. We pledge to serve the tribe wholeheartedly and care for every tribesperson as our own.”

Ge Xing sighed, stepping forward to pat Sa Miu’er’s shoulder. “No need to say such things, child. Your shaman was a great beast. Anyone who followed him cannot have bad intentions. The Watson Tribe welcomes you.”

At noon, the sunlight bathed the land. The beast tide retreated into the forest where the shade weakened the sun’s rays. Together, the shaman of Watson and Bei Ni held a ceremony to honor and pray for the elder shaman’s sacrifice.

After the ceremony, Ji Nuan returned to her blueprints and added several new courtyards. The beastmen of the Green Mountain Tribe joined the bustling construction efforts with renewed purpose.

The cubs, with their short memories, quickly forgot the sorrow. The new arrivals were soon running and playing with their new friends, their laughter filling the air.

“Does it hurt?” Ji Nuan asked as she applied medicine to Xiu Yan’s bruised arm, her tone filled with concern.

Xiu Yan pressed his lips together, his expression pained. His eyes looked pitifully at Ji Nuan. “Yes, it hurts. It hurts so much!”

Ji Nuan paused, her hand hovering midair as she looked at him suspiciously. “Should I stop applying the medicine then?”

Xiu Yan’s expression changed instantly.

Stop? Absolutely not!
