Jumping down from the wall, Ge Xing washed off the dirt clinging to his body before lazily heading toward the gate. From a distance, he saw the towering figure of Xiong Dan standing there and teased, “Well, well, big bear. You must really miss me. It hasn’t been long, yet here you are again.”

Xiong Dan rolled his eyes dramatically. “Stop flattering yourself. Who’d miss you? I’m here to talk about something important.”

Noticing the seriousness on Xiong Dan’s face, Ge Xing dropped his playful tone and led him into the tribe.

“You all live in such small shelters?” Xiong Dan asked, touching one of the tents made from hides.

Ge Xing sighed. “Yes. After migrating, we realized there was no large enough territory in the forest to sustain our tribe, so we settled here on the flatlands. At least we can catch some yellow goats and green oxen.”

There was a bitterness in Ge Xing’s tone that even Xiong Dan could feel. It made his heart ache a little.

After thinking for a moment, Xiong Dan said, “Why not bring your people to join the Grizzly Tribe? Our land is vast, and prey is plentiful. As long as you hunt diligently, none of you will go hungry.”

Ge Xing shook his head bitterly. “Let’s save that for later. Unless it’s the last resort, who’d want to abandon their own tribe?”

Xiong Dan nodded. “True. These tribes have been passed down through generations from our ancestors.”

Wiping at the corners of his eyes as if shedding tears that weren’t there, Xiong Dan looked at Ge Xing. “So, why did you come today? I thought you’d be busy organizing things for the beast tide.”

Xiong Dan nodded. “Everything is mostly settled. I came to tell you that the Grizzly Tribe, Rock Tribe, fruit Tribe, and Teng Kui’s tribe have decided to form an alliance. Tomorrow, we’ll all gather on the Rock Tribe’s Mountain to resist the beast tide together. I came to ask if the Watson Tribe would like to join us.”

Ge Xing blinked. A lower-river tribe forming such a united organization?

He pretended to be excited as he nodded. “Of course! Our tribe has so few beastmen and barely enough food. If we could join, that would be ideal.”

Scratching his head awkwardly, Xiong Dan hesitated. “Ge Xing… the thing is, because your tribe has so few beastmen, you wouldn’t contribute much to resisting the beast tide. The other three tribes are reluctant. They said if we’re to protect your tribe, you’d need to provide some food in return.”

Ge Xing’s expression instantly turned bitter. “Xiong Dan, we’re close, so I won’t hide this from you. The food we stored ran out long ago. Right now, we’re relying on our beastmen to hunt for whatever we can eat. We simply can’t spare anything to share.”

Xiong Dan pressed his lips together gloomily. “If it were just my tribe, I’d absolutely let you join us. But now…” He shook his head.

Ge Xing patted Xiong Dan’s shoulder. “It’s fine. I believe that even on our own, we’ll find a way to get through this.”

Xiong Dan assumed Ge Xing was merely comforting him. Since the negotiation failed, Xiong Dan felt too embarrassed to linger and promptly bid farewell to the chief of the Watson Tribe.

Standing at the tribe gate, Ge Xing watched Xiong Dan’s figure grow smaller as he walked away. A faint smile played on Ge Xing’s lips. Who knows who’ll end up seeking protection from whom in the future?
