In the cave of the chief of the Grizzly Tribe, three beastmen were seated around the central fire pit. Xiong Dan, the chief of the Grizzly Tribe, handed fresh, tender raw meat on large leaves to the other two beastmen. “Shi Jie, Teng Kui, try this. Our tribe hunted this big antlered deer yesterday. The meat is fresh and tender, much better than the frozen meat we had during the cold season.”

The two leaders’ eyes lit up as they took the cleaned fresh meat, tearing it apart with their hands.

As Teng Kui bit into the juicy meat, he looked suspiciously at Xiong Dan. “Hey, dumb bear, with food so scarce these days, why did you call us over to eat meat?”

Shi Jie, chewing his portion, couldn’t speak but nodded in agreement.

Xiong Dan tore off another piece of meat and stuffed it into his mouth, speaking indistinctly. “Wait for Sang Guo to arrive. I’ll explain everything once everyone’s here.”

Shi Jie and Teng Kui exchanged a glance. Teng Kui quickly stuffed the rest of his meat into his mouth. “You even called over that female from the fruit Tribe?”

Xiong Dan nodded. “This matter concerns all our tribes. Everyone should know about it.”

Teng Kui scoffed. “What’s the point of calling that old female? She’s useless. What could she—”

Before he could finish, a sharp, feminine voice interrupted him. “Teng Kui, you old fool, you always badmouth me when I’m not around!”

Teng Kui froze awkwardly. How did that old female always show up at the perfect time? Was she eavesdropping outside?

He forced a smile. “No way, I was just joking! Haha, just kidding!” Turning to Xiong Dan and Shi Jie, he added, “Right? We’re just joking around!”

Under normal circumstances, Xiong Dan might have joined in, teasing Teng Kui and watching him spar verbally with Sang Guo. But now, there were serious matters to discuss.

Xiong Dan signaled to a guard, who brought in an beast skin mat and laid it on the opposite side of the fire pit. He cut a fresh piece of antlered deer meat and handed it to Sang Guo before adopting a solemn expression. “The reason I called you all here today is to discuss something very important—something that concerns the survival of our tribes.”

Seeing his serious demeanor, the three beastmen immediately straightened up, putting aside thoughts of eating. “What is it?” they asked in unison. What could possibly threaten the survival of their tribes?

Xiong Dan said, “Today, when our beastmen went hunting, they found no prey in the forest. Even birds and smaller beasts were gone. I asked the shaman about it, and she said this only happens during earthquakes or the great beast tide.”

Shi Jie immediately felt uneasy. His tribe, the Rock Tribe, lived on a stone mountain. If it was an earthquake, their tribe would be in grave danger. “Is it an earthquake?” he asked nervously.

Xiong Dan shook his head. “No. Over the past few days, we’ve discovered that the Watson Tribe has relocated to the plains. According to Ge Xing, they moved to avoid the increasing number of predators. The upstream forest is nearly overrun by wild beasts spilling out from the Ainilu Mountains!”

“What?”

“When did this happen?”

“Why is this happening?”

The three leaders burst out in shock, their voices overlapping.

Xiong Dan explained, “The last great beast tide was caused by an extended rainy season, which left predators without enough prey, driving them to attack beastman tribes. This time, with the cold season dragging on so long, did you really think there wouldn’t be any consequences?”

The three beastmen’s faces turned grim. As beastmen who had lived in the Ainilu Forest for generations, they were well aware of the devastation a great beast tide could bring. It was nothing short of a disaster for their kind.
