Leisurely Life in the Beast World - Chapter 220
Ji Nuan bypassed the pile of hides and headed toward the farthest section of the storage room. There, she found half the space filled with dried grass and large leaves. Her eyes lit up—this was exactly what she needed.
“Uncle,” Ji Nuan called, turning to face Ge Xing, who looked completely baffled by her actions. “Which households in the tribe currently have dried grass and large leaves?”
Ge Xing scratched his head thoughtfully. “Before the cold season, when we were building houses, every household stocked up on a lot of it. During the cold season, when there wasn’t much to do, people started weaving the grass mats you mentioned, to sleep on them during the warm season.”
Ji Nuan gave him a broad smile. “That’s perfect. Please have everyone start weaving grass mats immediately. Any family that doesn’t have enough can borrow from others. Make sure each female has at least two mats taller than themselves. They shouldn’t be too narrow—they need to be wide enough to wrap around the body completely.”
She added, “Also, assign some of the beastmen to weave large backpacks. This time, the backpacks need to be sturdy and big. Use knot trees for the frame, and weave the rest using a mixture of dried grass and large leaves. Line the inside securely with hides for insulation—it must be warm.”
Ge Xing’s eyes lit up with understanding. “Is this for carrying the cubs?”
Ji Nuan nodded. “Exactly. Cubs are even more delicate than females—they mustn’t fall sick.”
Beaming, Ge Xing turned and headed out, his face full of enthusiasm. However, just as he reached the doorway, he paused and turned back, a sudden thought crossing his mind. “Ji Nuan, can females be carried in these baskets too?”
Ji Nuan broke into a cold sweat. “No, absolutely not. Females cannot be carried.”
Ge Xing raised an eyebrow. “Are you doubting the abilities of beastmen? Carrying females is no different than carrying cubs for us.”
Ji Nuan’s face twitched as she raised her voice. “How could any backpack be sturdy enough for that? Cubs can sit in them because they’re light. If a female sat in one, it would just fall apart!”
You’ve got to be kidding me!
Ge Xing blushed slightly, shrinking his neck as he faced Ji Nuan’s fierce gaze. Inwardly, he muttered, “This cub is becoming less and less gentle these days.”
Watching the troublesome chief’s silhouette disappear into the rain, Ji Nuan went back inside, grabbed a small stool, and sat by the dried grass, starting to weave a grass mat. As someone with poor crafting skills, she couldn’t manage the complexity of a straw cape and could only make a simple grass mat to wrap herself up in.
Thanks to Ge Xing’s loud proclamation, the Watson Tribe was soon caught up in a new trend of weaving grass mats and backpacks. The beastmen who managed to weave sturdy and aesthetically pleasing baskets even caught the attention of the females during this precarious time, securing mates and escaping the ranks of the single.
This, of course, drew the envious and jealous gazes of the remaining single beastmen.
(So, this just goes to show how important it is to master a skill!)
The following night, the beastmen guarding the tribe’s food storage finally heard sounds from inside. Heavy footsteps echoed clearly, and before long, Xiu Yan and the others appeared before the guards’ astonished eyes.
Meanwhile, Ji Nuan, having stayed up late weaving grass mats the night before, had slept soundly and woke up well-rested the next day. Outside, it was still a gloomy, rainy day.
She grabbed the clothes beside her pillow and got dressed, intending to cook some purple fruit porridge for herself. The warm dish would be soothing for her stomach. However, her movements froze when she noticed the chubby cub sprawled out on its back, covered in a small hide blanket.
When did this little guy come back?
After two days apart, why did it feel like its bottom wasn’t as round as before?
Ji Nuan’s fingers twitched a couple of times before she finally reached out and touched it. Sure enough, it didn’t feel as soft and bouncy as before. It wasn’t as pleasant to the touch anymore!
