Leisurely Life in the Beast World - Chapter 219
Xiu Yan drank the last bit of soup from the bowl before answering, “It was wild beasts, and a lot of them. Right now, the trench outside the tribe’s gates is filled with their corpses. Several beastmen were also injured.”
Ji Nuan’s face darkened. “But isn’t it said that wild beasts don’t attack beastmen tribes on such a large scale during the rainy season?”
Xiu Yan’s expression was grim. “This year, the cold season lasted more than a month longer than usual. These wild beasts have gone far too long without enough food. What wouldn’t they do to fill their stomachs?”
Ji Nuan’s heart tightened. “What should we do? If the trench outside gets filled with their corpses, the wild beasts will step over them and reach the gates. We’ll be in danger—who knows if they’ll break through and get inside?”
Standing upright, Xiu Yan said, “I’m going to find the chief. Later, I’ll take some beastmen to scout the back mountain. If there aren’t too many beasts there, we’ll migrate that way. We can’t stay here any longer.”
Ji Nuan nodded. “Put on another beast hide coat before you go. It’s too cold in the rain. I’ll wait here for news.”
Xiu Yan hugged her briefly, then went back inside to grab a beast hide to cover his head. Without another word, he rushed out into the rain.
Ji Nuan gazed out at the rain-soaked yard and the scattered houses of the tribe. Her heart was heavy with reluctance. These homes had been painstakingly built by the tribe members. She had hoped to develop this place into a proper settlement, a secondary tribe, but now they were being forced to abandon it for survival.
Xiu Yan didn’t return for the entire day. Ji Nuan’s anxiety would have overwhelmed her if not for the periodic reports brought back by beastmen about the progress of the scouting party.
In the shaman’s home, Bo Sen and the other beastmen had already been relocated to other vacant houses. Ji Nuan sat on the warm bed-table alongside the chief and the shaman, but the atmosphere was tense, their brows furrowed.
Breaking the silence, the shaman sighed. “I wonder how those cubs are doing. Why haven’t they returned yet?”
The chief waved his hand. “Don’t worry. Xiu Yan is likely scouting a wider area. This time, we’ll be traveling with females and cubs, so we must be extra cautious.”
Ji Nuan was struck by his words. That’s right—this migration would include females and cubs. Prolonged exposure to the rain could make them sick.
She quickly got up, put on her beast hide coat, and turned to the chief and the shaman. “If we migrate during the rainy season, the females and cubs will definitely get sick from being in the rain for too long.”
The shaman pointed to a large beast hide bundle in the corner. “I’ve already thought of that. I’ve packed all the herbs we collected last year.”
Ji Nuan shook her head. “That’s not enough. We can’t wait until they get sick to start treating them. We have to prevent them from falling ill in the first place.”
The shaman and the chief exchanged a glance, and a shared understanding lit their eyes.
The chief immediately grabbed his coat and jumped down from the bed. “Let’s go. I’ll help you. If you need more hands, I’ll call on some beastmen.”
The shaman, her hunched back suddenly a little straighter, added, “Go ahead. I’ll prepare more herbs.”
Ji Nuan and the chief made their way to the storage warehouse at Ji Nuan’s home. Inside, piles of hides were stacked like small mountains.
