Leisurely Life in the Beast World - Chapter 216
The cold aboveground didn’t reach the cellar at all. Xiu Yan helped Ji Nuan descend into their cellar, where the temperature was so mild it reminded her of spring in her past life.
Holding a small torch, Xiu Yan led Ji Nuan to the farthest corner of the cellar where the crisp sweet fruits were stored.
Xiu Yan pursed his lips and pointed to a mound of earth. “Look, the fruits have sprouted a lot of little green shoots. Didn’t you say we can’t eat them once that happens?”
Ji Nuan gestured for him to crouch down. The light of the torch illuminated the small patch, and sure enough, the crisp sweet fruits had sprouted numerous tiny green shoots. Her heart leaped with joy.
Turning to Xiu Yan, her face lit up with excitement. “This is great! It means they’ve started to sprout. Once they sprout, we can plant them in the ground, and later, we’ll have plenty of crisp sweet fruits to eat.”
Seeing the little female’s animated expression, Xiu Yan felt a weight lift from his chest. Since Man Li’s execution, Ji Nuan had seemed subdued, but now she was finally cheerful about something. His own mood lifted, and he broke into a goofy grin.
The two of them spent the entire afternoon carrying soil into the cellar, carefully spreading the mound of crisp sweet fruits across the dirt. They sprinkled a little water over the top and added another layer of soil to cover them.
Dusting off her hands, Ji Nuan felt an immense sense of satisfaction. She beamed at the budding patch of fruit seeds, humming softly to herself. Farming makes me happy. Farming brings me peace!
“Ah Nuan? Ah Nuan? Are you here? … Huh? Where is everyone?” Qi Mo’s voice called from the yard above.
Ji Nuan scrambled up the ladder, poking her head out from the cellar entrance. “I’m here, Qi Qi. What’s up?”
The sudden voice startled Qi Mo, and she spun around with a hand on her chest. “You scared me! Why did you pop up from the ground like that?”
Ji Nuan laughed mischievously. “I was just checking on the crisp sweet fruits in the cellar. Why are you looking for me now?”
Qi Mo scratched her head. “Xiao Pipi has a bit of a fever. I took her to grandmother’s place to get some bitter water for her to drink. When we were leaving, grandmother told me to ask you to visit her.”
Ji Nuan froze for a moment before nodding. “Alright, I’ll head over. Thank you. Go back and take care of Xiao Pipi. I’ll come by to check on you tomorrow.”
After seeing Qi Mo off, Ji Nuan sighed. She washed her hands thoroughly, changed into clean beast hide clothes, and made her way to grandmother’s house.
When she arrived, Ge Xing was already seated on the heated bed, snacking on dried fruit. The shaman’s disapproving glances at him were softened today; instead of swatting at him like usual, her gaze held a rare warmth.
Her face, always lined with wrinkles, seemed smoother, and her eyes sparkled with joy. When she saw Ji Nuan, she immediately waved her over. “Ah Nuan, little cub, come and sit.”
Ji Nuan smiled, slipped off her shoes, and climbed onto the bed. She turned to the shaman, curious about the contented look on her face.
“Are you wondering why I called you here?” the shaman asked, her tone teasing.
Ji Nuan nodded obediently.
The smile on the shaman’s face widened. “Because I received a revelation from the Beast God. The cold season is almost over!”
