Leisurely Life in the Beast World - Chapter 215
The open square was packed with beastmen, leaving no room to pass. The females stood in the innermost circle, bundled in thick beast hide clothing, glaring disdainfully at the dejected Man Li. Some of the older cubs threw stones at the malicious female.
Ji Nuan approached slowly, her emotions complicated as she looked at the disheveled Man Li.
Before Ji Nuan had reincarnated into this world, inhabiting the body of Shan Zai’er, this female had bullied the original owner of her body, stealing food and hides. The original owner had been meek, enduring the abuse in silence. After Ji Nuan’s arrival, Man Li’s attempts to bully her were repeatedly thwarted.
Eventually, Man Li’s collusion with the Tumang Tribe was exposed, leading to her expulsion.
Man Li’s hatred for the Watson Tribe—and for Ji Nuan—had reached a point of no return. Ji Nuan knew that letting Man Li go again would only invite more danger for the tribe and for herself. She couldn’t allow that to happen.
The gathered beastmen parted as the shaman arrived, leaning on Bo for support. As a female who had grown up in the Watson Tribe, Man Li was well aware of the shaman’s leniency toward females. It was this leniency that had saved her life before; instead of being killed, she had only been exiled.
Man Li’s eyes lit up with hope as she looked toward the shaman. She prayed for her to intervene, even if it meant exile again. Anything was better than the cold, murderous stares from Ji Nuan and the other beastmen.
The shaman slowly approached Man Li. Her dry, weathered hand gently stroked Man Li’s filthy cheek. “Child, how could you endanger your tribe time and time again? Do you have no gratitude for the tribe that raised you?”
Her tone was soft, almost like a mother chastising her cub. Yet her icy gaze drained the remaining hope from Man Li’s heart.
As her eyes filled with despair, hatred and madness took their place. Man Li struggled violently, letting out beastistic growls. Her disheveled hair made her look like a wild beast in its final throes.
The shaman lowered her hand and walked away without saying another word.
Ji Nuan stepped forward, stopping just far enough to keep a safe distance. Her soft voice echoed through the square. “Kill her.”
Her tone was gentle, but her gaze was icy.
Man Li met her end at the hands of Di Feng and a few others. Her body was thrown into the ditch outside the city walls, impaled by a sharpened wooden stake. It pierced through her middle, leaving her cold and lifeless.
This cold season had been anything but quiet. From the unusual behavior of wild beasts to the rescue of neighboring tribes, it had been eventful.
Though the cold season was supposed to be a time of rest, Ji Nuan felt she had never been busier.
“Ah Nuan, the crisp sweet fruits in the cellar have gone bad!” Xiu Yan’s pitiful voice came from outside, interrupting Ji Nuan’s thoughts.
Hearing that her precious fruits had spoiled, Ji Nuan couldn’t afford to dwell on other concerns. She quickly put on her beast hide coat and stepped outside.
“Let’s go check it out,” she said, laughing as she patted Xiu Yan’s drooping shoulder. “It’s okay, brother Xiu Yan. Don’t be so down. Worst case, we’ll head to the Grizzly Bear Tribe during the warm season and trade for more.”
Xiu Yan’s eyes brightened, and he looked at Ji Nuan with a hopeful expression. “You’re not upset with me for not storing them properly?”
Seeing his reaction, Ji Nuan couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Haha, it’s really no big deal. Come on, let’s go see what happened. Maybe it’s not as bad as it seems.”
