“Uncle, Auntie Nai Ma mentioned wanting Ge Tai to become Sa Duo’er’s mate. Did you agree to that?” Tu Yaoyao suddenly chimed in, her little furry head popping out from the side, her mouth still dotted with crumbs from the dried fruit she had been snacking on.

The shaman smiled fondly at Tu Yaoyao and tapped her little nose, gently helping her wipe away the remnants on her lips. Chief Ge Xing, on the other hand, pulled a face full of disdain. “I would never let Ge Tai become that Sa Duo’er’s mate. They’re the ones seeking protection from our tribe. Besides, Sa Duo’er’s whimpering and fake delicate attitude is enough to make any beast uncomfortable.”

(Oh my, chief, you and Ge Tai are truly father and son. Even your use of “whimpering” is exactly the same!)

“But Auntie Nai Ma really likes her,” Tu Yaoyao added with a pout, puffing her cheeks indignantly.

Ge Xing’s neck shrank slightly as a sly expression crossed his face. Lowering his voice, he whispered, “Don’t worry, Nai Ma is far sharper than I am. We’re keeping Sa Duo’er around to keep an eye on that beast beside her. There’s something suspicious about him.”

Ji Nuan and Tu Yaoyao immediately understood, their gazes reflecting newfound respect for Chief Ge Xing. Puffing out his chest under their admiring looks, his posture straightened up noticeably.

“Ji Nuan, you two must be cautious as well. Don’t go out alone. Understand?” the shaman warned, clasping Ji Nuan’s and Tu Yaoyao’s hands tightly.

Just then, the normally quiet Xiu Yan broke his silence. “That beast’s name is Lu Shi. I saw him during the last tribal gathering. He’s Lu Te’s youngest son and very favored by him. I later heard he left to chase after Sa Duo’er and ended up in Green Mountain Tribe.”

Ji Nuan frowned deeply. “Sa Ka’er knows about the history between Lu Te and our tribe. Yet, he still brought Lu Te’s son here?”

Ge Xing’s eyes flickered, narrowing slightly. “I’ve seen this Lu Shi as well, but Sa Ka’er never mentioned anything about him. This means we shouldn’t trust Green Mountain Tribe completely.”

Xiu Yan stood, stretching his body like a lazy silver wolf, his round paws pressing downward as he arched his back. “When I saw them at the shaman’s house earlier, the way that beast looked at Ji Nuan made me uncomfortable.”

Ji Nuan froze, confused. She hadn’t noticed anything unusual at the time.

The expressions of the shaman and Ge Xing darkened. The tribe’s survival and current development owed much to Ji Nuan’s innovative ideas. For anyone to harbor ill intentions toward her was completely intolerable.

The shaman reached into her oversized beast-skin sleeve, her dry, slender hand emerging with a small, round furball. The sudden exposure to light left the furball, Fu Yi, momentarily stunned. He rubbed his little eyes with his tiny claws, tilting his head as he let out a soft “squeak, squeak.”

Setting Fu Yi on the table, the shaman’s movement immediately caught Tu Yaoyao’s attention. Her expression turned mischievous as she reached out to poke Fu Yi’s round little rump, causing the startled creature to squeak in alarm and scuttle behind the shaman for protection. Only then did Tu Yaoyao sheepishly pull her hand back, giggling.

“Fu Yi,” the shaman began, her tone serious. “For the next few days, stay near Sa Duo’er and that beast Lu Shi. If he does anything harmful to our tribe or its members, feed him this ground fang grass powder and bring him back to us. We’ll take care of him then.”
