Leisurely Life in the Beast World - Chapter 106
Sa Ka’er sat with his tribesmen around a campfire, learning to roast meat. Although the meat still came out half-raw, it was much better than the raw meat they used to eat, so the group wolfed it down eagerly.
Ge Xing brought Pei De to the campfire and sat beside Sa Ka’er. Clapping Sa Ka’er on the back as he gnawed on the meat, Ge Xing enthusiastically slung an arm over Pei De’s shoulder and introduced him warmly, “Pei De, this is Sa Ka’er, the chief of the Green Mountain Tribe.”
He then turned to Sa Ka’er, who was still focused on devouring his meal, and, with an annoyed look, lifted a foot to give him a solid kick. “Slow down, will you? Tsk tsk.” Turning back to Pei De, he commented with disdain, “Who knows how long it’s been since the Green Mountain Tribe last had roasted meat.”
Despite his words, the hint of pride in his tone couldn’t be hidden.
Ha! The Watson Tribe has been eating roasted meat all along.
(Thick-skinned, Ge Xing. It was only after Ji Nuan showed up that your tribe started roasting meat.)
Pei De nodded with a slightly awkward expression before laughing. “Why don’t we go to the cubs and roast a little meat ourselves? It’s probably better to reach the tribe gathering site before nightfall anyway.”
Ge Xing stopped paying attention to the food-loving Sa Ka’er and walked arm-in-arm with Pei De toward another campfire.
Ge Xing didn’t notice cold eyes watching them from the shadows. Pei De, however, had been on edge for some time. He felt a chilling malice creeping up his spine, making his fur stand on end. Glancing at Ge Xing, the leader who had saved his Liangshan Tribe twice, Pei De’s gaze grew resolute.
“Alright, cubs, now that we’re full, it’s time to move out!”
(Move out here refers to heading to the gathering site.)
Ge Xing wiped the grease off his face and bellowed loudly. The beastmen sprawled out in various positions around the campfire, startled awake, and immediately began gathering their trade goods.
“Ge Xing, you and your group go to the tribe gathering site. We’re heading out to hunt and might not return for a few days. Once we’re back, we’ll eat together,” Sa Ka’er said, giving Ge Xing a big hug.
Ge Xing patted Sa Ka’er’s back. “Alright, see you at the tribe gathering.”
With that, he called the beastmen of the Liangshan Tribe to move out into the forest. By the riverside, the flickering firelight cast eerie shadows on Sa Ka’er’s face.
The ominous and flickering light made his expression appear strange and unsettling.
Sa Miu’er, noticing his father’s somber mood, asked curiously, “Father, what’s wrong? Do you miss Uncle Ge Xing? We’ll see him again in a few days.”
Sa Ka’er adjusted his expression and patted his son’s shoulder. “Yes, it’s been so long since we last met, and now we’re parting again so soon. It’s… ha! Never mind. Go rest quickly; we have hunting to do tomorrow!”
Ji Nuan rode on Xiu Yan’s broad wolf back in the dark forest, cradling the fluffy furball Fu Yi in her arms. Beside her walked Ge Xing and Pei De.
Pei De seemed distracted along the way, frequently glancing behind them as if expecting a ferocious beast to leap out at any moment.
Ge Xing noticed his unease and asked, “Pei De, what’s going on?”
Pei De flinched at the question, gritted his teeth, and pulled Ge Xing over to Ji Nuan’s side. “Ge Xing, you said this little female cub is your shaman apprentice. Can I trust her?”
Ge Xing’s expression grew serious as he replied, “Of course. What’s the matter?”
Ji Nuan had already noticed Pei De’s strange behavior, and now that he had chosen to reveal the mystery, her interest was piqued.
“Sa Ka’er has been getting very close to the Tumang Tribe. You should be careful,” Pei De said in a hushed voice.
Ji Nuan’s heart skipped a beat, and she immediately looked at Ge Xing, whose expression had turned grim.
Seeing their silence, Pei De became anxious. “You don’t believe me? I saw it with my own eyes. Not long ago, the Green Mountain Tribe traded many divine punishment fruits with the Tumang Tribe. One of Sa Ka’er’s female cub’s mates is the youngest son of Lu Te. It was that cub who led the raid on our tribe last time. Have you forgotten?”
Ge Xing’s expression darkened. A brother he had trusted was actually working with the Tumang Tribe. This was… unthinkable.
The tension between the three beastmen didn’t affect Xiu Yan’s frustration. His fluffy tail flicked irritably behind him, and his massive wolf head kept turning to glare at the white furball snuggled contentedly in Ji Nuan’s arms.
Those little eye-daggers!
Whenever he glanced at Ji Nuan’s oblivious back, his gaze was helplessly deflected.
The tall silver wolf’s ears drooped pitifully as a frustrated whine escaped him. Awooo, awooo…
So annoying!
And no one’s soothing me this time!
