Ge Xing’s face radiated pride as he spoke, “That’s right! Come, I’ll take you to see the rest of our tribe by the river.”

Without waiting for an answer, he grabbed Sa Ka’er, whose gaze still lingered on Ji Nuan, and headed toward the group of beastmen from Watson gathered near the riverbank.

Ji Nuan shook her head helplessly. Uncle Ge Xing is so carefree—he’s completely forgotten about me, the injured one. Minus points for care!

“Ji Nuan, let me help you over!” Beside her, Fu Yi, who had shifted into his tall beastman form, shyly extended a hand.

Ji Nuan smiled warmly and reached out. Just as their hands were about to meet, a pale, elegant hand swept in from nowhere, interrupting the gesture.

Before Ji Nuan could react, she lifted herself into a chilly embrace. Looking up, she met the faintly displeased face of the silver wolf beastman, Xiu Yan. His frosty gaze was locked onto the startled Fu Yi as if daring him to make another move.

Xiu Yan tightened his hold on Ji Nuan as he turned to leave, carrying her effortlessly toward the riverbank.

Fu Yi scratched his head, bewildered. What’s wrong with Xiu Yan today? He seems to be in a foul mood. Is his injury still bothering him?

Unable to make sense of it, Fu Yi gave up thinking. With a flash of light, he returned to his fluffy mink form and hopped along after the two figures disappearing into the distance.

The gentle breeze stirred fallen leaves, sending them dancing across the forest floor before scattering them elsewhere.

A young hand reached down, picking up a stray leaf. Fingers flexed slightly, crushing the leaf into fragments.

A soft, youthful chuckle escaped, carried away by the wind.

Xiu Yan’s sharp gaze snapped toward the forest edge, a glint of suspicion in his silver eyes.

But all he saw were rustling leaves fluttering gently in the breeze.

Frowning, his brow knit in thought. “Did I mishear?” he murmured to himself.

The sound had been faint yet oddly familiar. Still, with nothing in sight, he dismissed it and continued walking toward the riverbank, his senses on high alert.

“Here he is—Xiu Yan!” Ge Xing’s booming voice rang out ahead, full of excitement. “Sa Ka’er, let me introduce you. This is Xiu Li’s son, Xiu Yan. He’s one of the strongest warriors in our tribe!”

Sa Ka’er stepped forward, clapping Xiu Yan’s back with a hearty laugh. “Good lad! Stronger than your father, I bet! Hahaha!”

Xiu Yan raised an eyebrow but politely nodded at Sa Ka’er. Without a word, he gently carried Ji Nuan to a hide mat nearby and set her down.

Sa Ka’er, ever curious, followed closely. His sly grin deepened as he crouched beside the mat, eyeing Ji Nuan as though she were a rare treasure.

“Ji Nuan, little cub,” he began, his tone friendly but eager. “My mother and your chief’s mother are sisters, you know. Our tribes have always been close. So, could you teach us how to cross the river safely?”

His hands fidgeted nervously as he spoke, his gaze filled with anticipation.

Ji Nuan glanced at Ge Xing, who also seemed expectantly hopeful. The pair’s earnestness brought a smile to her face.

“I don’t see why not,” she replied. “We’re all children of the Beast God, after all. If Chief Ge Xing agrees, I’ll happily share it with your tribe.”

The two older beastmen’s eyes lit up with joy. Sa Ka’er expressed his heartfelt thanks before Ge Xing pulled him aside, the two slipping into a hushed conversation filled with muffled chuckles and conspiratorial whispers.

“Xiu Yan!”

A pleasant, masculine voice called out from Ji Nuan’s side. Turning toward the sound, she saw a golden-haired beastman approaching. Tall and bright-eyed, his face carried a warm and inviting expression.

He bore an uncanny resemblance to Ge Tai at a glance, especially in his sunny, smiling eyes.

Noticing his name being called by an unfamiliar beastman, Xiu Yan cast him a puzzled look.

The golden-haired beastman’s grin widened. “I’m Sa Miu’er, son of Sa Ka’er, the chief of the Green Mountain Tribe. I’m also an apprentice shaman of our tribe.”

With a playful glint in his eye, Sa Miu’er added, “We used to play together as cubs, remember? My sister and I stayed with the Watson Tribe for a year. Back then, you even said you’d become her mate!”

What?!

Xiu Yan froze, his fur metaphorically bristling. Where did this lunatic come from, spouting nonsense and ruining my reputation?!

Feeling the icy gaze boring into him from Ji Nuan’s direction, Xiu Yan’s back went rigid. A cold sweat prickled under his fur.

This is bad. Really bad. If my little cub believes this nonsense, how will I ever live it down?
